Summary: Mortierella alpina was studied for lipid recovery, with different cell disruption techniques and process parameters of supercritical carbon dioxide extraction explored. High-speed homogenization was found to be the most efficient mechanical disruption technique, while 1 M HCl treatment showed similar lipid recovery to high-speed homogenization. Supercritical carbon dioxide extraction achieved a lipid recovery rate of 92.86% under specific process parameters.

Summary: This study presents a modular engineering approach that systematically eliminates metabolic bottlenecks in the production of arachidonic acid (ARA). By dividing the elongase/desaturase pathway in Mortierella alpina into push and pull modules, combinatorial optimization was performed to balance the production and consumption of intermediate metabolites. The engineered strain MA5 achieved a significant increase in ARA yield, with a final titer of 4.4 g L-1 in shake-flask fermentation.

Summary: Arachidonic acid (ARA) is a crucial omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acid that plays essential roles in human immune, cardiovascular, and nervous systems. Microorganisms are considered as a potential alternative resource for ARA production due to limitations in existing resources. Efforts to enhance ARA production have been focused on optimizing culture medium, fermentation processes, and genetic modification, with synthetic biology methods and technologies showing promise for further increasing ARA production.

Summary: The search for rich sources of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) has led researchers to explore microbial sources, particularly single cell oil (SCO) production by filamentous fungi and yeast. The Mortierellaceae family is well-known for its PUFA-producing strains, such as Mortierella alpina which is industrially used to produce arachidonic acid (20:4 n6). This review discusses the current strategies to increase PUFA production by Mortierellaceae strains, including physiological manipulation, metabolic engineering, and process optimization.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the differences in specific fatty acids between vitiligo patients and healthy individuals and to investigate their association with clinical features. The results showed that the serological level of alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) was increased in vitiligo patients, while the levels of arachidonic acid (ARA), arachidic acid (AA), and behenic acid were decreased. ALA levels were positively associated with the vitiligo area scoring index (VASI). Supplementation with ARA or nordihydroguaiaretic acid (NDGA) could suppress the function of CD8(+) T cells.

Summary: This study optimized the production of arachidonic acid by Mortierella alpina CBS 754.68 on oil cakes, identifying the best conditions for fermentation and demonstrating the significant impact of variables such as time, temperature, and substrate particle size on arachidonic acid production. The research also found that aeration rate can significantly increase arachidonic acid yield in solid-state fermentation.

Summary: Bank filtration for water treatment is limited by clogging, with fine sand resulting in more severe biological clogging and a significant reduction in hydraulic conductivity. Factors such as grain size distribution and hydrodynamic effects play a role in biological clogging during filtration processes.

Summary: A nanocarrier has been developed to protect against myocardial ischemia/reperfusion (MI/R) injury by reducing cardiomyocyte apoptosis and improving cardiac function. The carrier efficiently delivers an anti-cryptosporidial drug and significantly reduces MI/R-induced functional deterioration and cardiomyocyte injury in experimental models.

Summary: Reliable and cost-effective methods for monitoring microbial activity are crucial for process control in wastewater treatment plants. This study developed an accurate and cost-effective modified DHA approach and demonstrated its feasibility through comparison with other testing methods. In addition, the sensitivity mechanisms of the DHA test were elucidated through experiments and theoretical analysis.

Summary: Research on the role of arachidonic acid and its metabolites in kidney disease, particularly idiopathic nephrotic syndrome, is limited. These substances play a significant role in various biological processes related to kidney function, inflammation, and fibrosis. Dietary interventions to maintain balance between arachidonic acid and linoleic acid could potentially help mitigate inflammatory states seen in kidney diseases.

Summary: The study found that pro-inflammatory mediators derived from arachidonic acid metabolism in sputum of bronchiectasis patients were positively associated with neutrophil elastase, Pseudomonas aeruginosa identifications, and radiological gravity index. On the other hand, pro-resolution mediators derived from docosahexaenoic acid were associated with better health status, showing an inverse correlation with radiological gravity index, bacterial infections, and sputum volume production.

Summary: Improved knowledge and understanding of bacterial communities are crucial for effective crop disease management. This study investigated the relationship between bacterial communities and common scab in different potato varieties at different locations and times. The results showed that bacterial communities were more diverse across geographical locations, spatial locations, and harvesting times rather than potato varieties, suggesting no significant correlation between bacterial community richness and diversity among the varieties.
