Summary: This study compared the effects of multidisciplinary prehabilitation and usual care on functional independence and activity limitations in patients undergoing total knee replacement surgery for osteoarthritis. The results showed that multidisciplinary prehabilitation did not improve short-term functional independence or reduce activity limitations in the midterm after surgery.

Summary: Hip fractures are a major health concern, especially for older adults, with negative impacts on quality of life, mobility, and mortality. This study aims to investigate the short-term benefits of a supervised preoperative aerobic moderate-intensity interval training (MIIT) program and the added effect of an 8-week postoperative MIIT aerobic exercise program. The study also aims to explore the amelioration of surgical outcomes and hemostatic balance through exercise.

Summary: This study aimed to identify and describe physiotherapy service provision for cancer survivors in Australia and the scope of these services. The results showed that designated physiotherapy services for cancer survivors are limited in Australia, with disparities between metropolitan and regional/rural areas. There is a need for increased resources to establish oncology physiotherapy services.

Summary: Lung cancer is a highly fatal disease and surgical resection is the most effective treatment for early-stage lung cancer. This study aims to explore if home-based pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) is as effective as outpatient PR for lung cancer patients following surgery. The study is a randomized controlled trial with two groups, outpatient group and home-based group, and the primary outcome is quality of life. The results will be disseminated through peer-reviewed publications and conferences.

Summary: This paper provides an overview of the multifaceted role of nursing in enhanced recovery after surgery, with specific recommendations for radical cystectomy pathways in advanced bladder cancer surgery. The establishment of nurse-led multi-professional prehabilitation academies is a key trend in surgical pathways. Postoperative and discharge management need to be changed, with highly skilled discharge nurses required to develop comprehensive and safe discharge plans. Limited efforts have been made to evaluate rational principles and goals for rehabilitation after radical cystectomy, highlighting the potential for ERAS nurses to take a leadership role in the future.

Summary: Prehabilitation prior to oncological thoracic surgery has shown to be valuable in reducing postoperative pulmonary complications. This study aimed to determine whether preoperative pulmonary rehabilitation carried out by independent physiotherapists is feasible in private practice and can achieve similar results to institutional settings. The results suggest that prehabilitation by independent physiotherapists can lead to outcomes comparable to inpatient prehabilitation.

Summary: The study found that respiratory physiotherapy (RPT) can improve oxygenation in critically ill COVID-19 patients and the improvement persists after 6 hours. However, the improvement in oxygenation is not necessarily reflected in changes in lung aeration. Further research is needed to assess the efficacy of RPT in COVID-19 ICU patients.

Summary: This study investigated the association between heart rate and pulmonary embolism outcomes and found that a higher heart rate is associated with increased all-cause and PE-related mortality. Modifying the heart rate cutoff in the simplified Pulmonary Embolism Severity Index (sPESI) and the Bova score can improve the prognostication of patients with PE.

Summary: The study examined the relationship between elevated liver enzymes or FIB-4 levels and outcomes in VTE patients receiving anticoagulation therapy. Findings suggest that elevated liver enzymes were associated with higher mortality risk, while FIB-4 levels > 2.67 points were linked to increased major bleeding risk. Evaluating liver enzymes and FIB-4 index in VTE patients without liver disease may offer additional insights into the risk of major bleeding or death during anticoagulation therapy.

Summary: The external validation of Eurolung 1 and Eurolung 2 was conducted in a multicentre national database. Eurolung 1 showed suboptimal calibration and lower discrimination, while Eurolung 2 exhibited good calibration and higher discrimination. Therefore, Eurolung 2 seems to be applicable to other anatomic lung-resected patients, while Eurolung 1 lacks generalizability for new patients.

Summary: The study aimed to assess the diagnostic performance of combined CT and PET in mediastinal staging of surgical lung cancer. The overall success rate of CT and PET was 82.9%, with a high negative predictive value. Tumors larger than 3 cm and higher mediastinal SUVmax were associated with lower success rates, while VATS approach was associated with higher success rates. The risk of unexpected pN2 increased with certain risk factors but did not vary significantly with invasive testing.

Summary: The study aimed to assess the diagnostic yield and prognostic significance of endobronchial ultrasound-guided transbronchial needle aspiration (EBUS-TBNA) in patients with extrathoracic malignancies (EM) and abnormal mediastinal lymph nodes (MLN). The results showed that EBUS-TBNA had a high diagnostic yield in these patients, although the negative predictive value was lower in patients with head and neck tumors. Neoplastic MLN detected by EBUS-TBNA had prognostic implications in terms of overall survival and cancer-specific survival.

Summary: The RIETECAT study compared the long-term effectiveness and safety of enoxaparin with dalteparin or tinzaparin for the secondary prevention of VTE in adults with active cancer. The study found that over a 6-month period, there were limited differences in VTE recurrences, mortality rate, and major bleeding between the two groups. Propensity score matching analysis confirmed these findings.

Summary: The study found that about 60% of COVID-19 survivors had reduced DLCO 6 months after discharge, mainly in those over 60 years old, with a history of smoking, hypertension, severe COVID-19 experience, and persistent dyspnea after discharge. In addition, patients with reduced DLCO had higher levels of epithelial and endothelial markers.
