Summary: This study investigated the effect and feasibility of integrating a head and neck cancer-specific needs assessment tool into nursing rehabilitation consultations early in the post-surgical period. The results showed that the intervention did not improve quality of life or symptom burden, but identified and addressed important needs.

Summary: The role of photobiomodulation (PBM) in head and neck cancer (HNC) treatment was investigated. PBM showed beneficial effects in improving quality of life (QoL), nutritional status, reducing pain and functional impairment. It may also reduce interruptions in radiotherapy (RT) and improve cancer treatment outcomes. However, it does not directly impact cancer survival/recurrences. PBM should be included in supportive cancer care for HNC patients due to its efficacy, safety, feasibility, and tolerability.

Summary: This study investigated the degree of perceived fatigue in individuals treated for head and neck cancer (HNCa). Results showed that more than half of the participants reported clinically significant levels of fatigue. There was an inverse relationship between fatigue and overall health-related quality of life, suggesting that as fatigue increases, perceived HRQOL decreases.

Summary: Electrochemotherapy, based on reversible electroporation and intracellular accumulation of hydrophilic drug molecules, is considered an effective and safe treatment for tumors, including mucosal cancer of the head and neck. Limited experience with ECT in mucosal HNC due to poor accessibility of tumors highlights the need for further research to confirm its potential as a treatment option in selected patients.

Summary: Head and neck cancer treatment can have negative impact on health-related quality of life and treatment efficacy. Exercise training may bring benefits to these patients. This study aimed to analyze the acute effects of treatment on patients and their preferences for exercise training. The findings suggest that an exercise training program can improve the physical fitness of patients and reduce toxicities.

Summary: The study evaluated the feasibility of semi-automatic QOL-weighted NTCP-guided VMAT treatment plan optimization in head and neck cancer patients and compared it to conventional treatment. Results showed that QOL-weighted NTCP-guided VMAT plans were clinically acceptable, prioritizing sparing of organs at risk related to high-impact toxicities, leading to an improvement in predicted QOL compared to conventional VMAT plans.

Summary: Squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck (HNSCC) is a common malignancy with a complex negative impact on the patient's quality of life. Our retrospective study involving 89 patients who survived 3 years after HNSCC surgery showed an overall improvement in quality of life compared to the pre-treatment period. These findings underscore the importance of considering patient characteristics in quality-of-life research and demonstrate how such data can support the multi-disciplinary team in patient follow-up care.

The results suggest that late- and long-term side effects of treatment and financial hardship are associated with lower levels of flourishing.

Summary: Head and neck cancer is the seventh most common type of cancer worldwide, with the predominant risk factors being tobacco use, alcohol abuse, and oncogenic viruses. Treatment typically involves a multidisciplinary approach with surgery, radiotherapy, and systemic therapy, and is challenging due to site-specific and histology-specific variations.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the impact of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma diagnosis and treatment on patient and partner perceived intimacy, as well as whether a diagnosis of HPV-related head and neck squamous cell carcinoma affects patient-partner intimacy. The results showed that patient and partner intimacy levels remained stable or improved throughout the study, and there was generally agreement between couples in their levels of perceived intimacy. A diagnosis of HPV did not significantly affect intimacy scores.

Summary: This qualitative study explores the experiences of head and neck cancer (HNC) patients in communicating with health professionals. The loss of speech capacity is found to be distressing and traumatic for survivors of HNC. Tensions arise in the communication between patients and health professionals, including abrupt, hurried communication versus slower, more mindful communication. Disparities in health literacy levels and a lack of empathy are also observed.

Summary: In patients with head and neck cancer undergoing treatment, there is a correlation between quality of life scores and treatment outcomes, with higher scores associated with improved survival. However, the assessment of quality of life varies in clinical trials. Only 10 studies included supplemental quality of life data. The inclusion of trials introduces a high risk of bias. There is currently no standardized method for reporting quality of life data in clinical trials for head and neck cancer patients receiving antiEGFR inhibitors. Future trials should standardize their approach to improve patient-centered care and treatment choices for better survival outcomes.

Summary: This article describes the establishment and implementation of a therapeutic patient education program focused on cancer pain, as well as the challenges and opportunities encountered. Ten nurse-doctor pairs were trained and developed educational, evaluation, and communication tools for patients to understand different types of pain, pain treatments, and daily pain management. The importance of communicating with oncologists and independent health professionals was emphasized. The program met patient needs and addressed difficulties, such as organization, structure, and communication issues.

Summary: Pooled individual-level data from two large prospective studies of older breast cancer survivors showed that older women who received taxane-based chemotherapy did not experience greater declines in cognitive performance or well-being compared to women receiving other chemotherapy regimens. Despite being at greater risk for negative outcomes, treatment with taxane-based chemotherapies did not exacerbate these health consequences for older cancer survivors.

Summary: Cancer-related cognitive impairment (CRCI) has been increasingly identified in non-CNS system cancer patients over the last two decades in Europe. Researchers in Europe have contributed to the field by developing preclinical models and exploring underlying mechanisms. New challenges need to be addressed, including data sharing, standardization of assessments, and assessing additional biomarkers and neuroimaging investigations. This consensus paper summarizes the current state of CRCI research in Europe and proposes specific actions for future intervention programs based on shared scientific expert opinion.

Summary: The study aimed to analyze the impact of adjuvant trastuzumab on fatigue, emotional status, and quality of personal and work life in patients with localized breast cancer. The results showed that trastuzumab did not affect fatigue and return to work, but patients treated with trastuzumab may experience a stronger feeling of helplessness in terms of emotional well-being. Therefore, emotional support should be provided for patients receiving trastuzumab.

Summary: Soil contamination is a significant issue due to urbanization and industrialization. This paper introduces the bioaugmentation effect of fungal strain Absidia cylindrospora on co-contaminated industrial soil for the first time. The study investigates the evolution of metals and PAHs content in the soil over time, as well as the adsorption and/or accumulation of metals within the mycelium of Absidia cylindrospora. The results show that the fungal strain can simultaneously accumulate Cd, Co, Cu, Ni, and Zn, even in the presence of high levels of PAHs.

Summary: This study analyzed the impact of total laryngectomy on the quality of sexual life for cancer patients and the methods used to assess it. The results showed that the quality of sexual life was severely affected, including issues like erectile dysfunction, decreased ejaculatory function, and low libido. Lack of postoperative support was also reported. Therefore, these factors should be taken into account before performing total laryngectomy, and there is a need for a common information tool to improve the management of sexuality based on patient demand.

Summary: People with cancer and health professionals often face psychological distress in the field of oncology. Mindfulness meditation has been used to relieve stress-related symptoms. A pilot study was conducted to evaluate the feasibility of a mindfulness intervention involving cancer patients, health professionals, and others. The qualitative findings from focus groups showed that meditating together was appreciated and seen as motivating and relieving feelings of loneliness. Participants reported better stress management and discussed the benefits and challenges of meditation practice. The study supports the need for a fully powered randomized trial to demonstrate the potential added value of shared meditation in improving well-being among cancer patients, health professionals, and others.
