Abstract

HIV infection inWestern Europe is mainly concentrated among men who have sex with men, heterosexuals who acquired HIV from sub-Saharan African countries, and in people who inject drugs. The rate of newly diagnosed cases of HIV has remained roughly stable since 2004 whereas the number of people living with HIV has slowly increased due to new infections and the success of antiretroviral therapy in prolonging life. An ageing population is gradually emerging that will require additional care. There are large differences across countries in HIV testing rates, proportions of people who present to care with low CD4+ cell counts, accessibility to treatment and care, and rates of retention once in care. Improved collection of HIV surveillance data will benefit countries and help to understand their epidemic better. However, social inequalities experienced by people with HIV still remain in some regions and urgently need to be addressed.

Trends in rates and causes of hospitalization among people living with HIV in the antiretroviral therapy era: A retrospective cohort study in China, 2008-2020

Summary: This study examined the trends in hospitalization rates and causes among people living with HIV who initiated antiretroviral therapy (ART) in a designated HIV hospital in China. The results showed that although hospitalization rates decreased, AIDS-related events remained the leading cause of hospitalizations among HIV patients.

Summary: This study found that the prevalence of Helicobacter pylori infection is significantly lower in individuals living with HIV compared to HIV-negative population, and there is a positive linear trend of H. pylori co-infection in PLHIV, in contrast to the negative trend in HIV-negative patients. Patients with HIV/H. pylori co-infection had higher CD4(+) T cell counts and more cases with undetectable HIV viremia.

Summary: HIV-2 is endemic in some countries in West Africa, with limited experience and knowledge on management of individuals living with HIV-2 in Europe. Differential characteristics of HIV-2 compared to HIV-1 include diagnostic procedures, clinical course, and antiretroviral therapy. Recommendations for medical care of those living with HIV-2 in Western European countries include strategies for diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment, as well as suggestions for effective drug combinations and prevention methods.

Global Epidemiology of HIV/AIDS: A Resurgence in North America and Europe

Summary: This study aimed to assess global trends in HIV/AIDS and found that while many countries have decreasing incidence rates, some countries like Russia, Ukraine, Portugal, Brazil, Spain and the United States have been experiencing rising rates of new cases since 2010. Globally, there are about 5000 new infections daily, with approximately 500 of them being children. Mortality rates are decreasing globally while prevalence continues to rise.

Global Stability of Fractional Order HIV/AIDS Epidemic Model under Caputo Operator and Its Computational Modeling

Long-term policy changes are needed to preserve these options for those who benefit, as these new care paradigms may provide a roadmap for progress for those with other chronic health issues.

Summary: With the advent of highly effective combined antiretroviral treatment (cART) and large-scale HIV testing programs, the burden of AIDS-related comorbidities has significantly decreased over time. The incidence of Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) has also been greatly reduced but remains the most common cancer in patients living with HIV. Some HIV patients on antiretroviral treatment may develop less aggressive forms of KS, which may require systemic chemotherapy.

The authors provide evidence and recommendations to address barriers and improve implementation of expanded HIV testing.

In this study, HIV specialists review the literature and discuss the major challenges in HIV-associated comorbidities, providing insights and future strategies.

Summary: This study evaluated the efficacy of aviptadil in treating acute hypoxemic respiratory failure in COVID-19 patients. The results showed no significant difference in the primary efficacy outcome at day 90 compared to placebo, and there was also no significant difference in mortality between the two groups. The incidence of adverse events was similar in the aviptadil and placebo groups.

Summary: Concerns about side effects may contribute to vaccine hesitancy, but knowing that SARS-CoV-2 vaccines can lead to a stronger immune response may encourage more individuals to get vaccinated. Severe adverse reactions were associated with a stronger antibody response after the second vaccine dose, but not after the first. Regardless of side effects, most people experienced an effective immune response following vaccination.

Summary: This study aims to understand the healthcare activity and costs associated with caring for people living with HIV. The findings suggest that CD4 cell count and new patient status are the strongest predictors of hospital activity and costs. Demographic factors have weaker associations with costs and activity. These results can be used in future economic evaluations and budget planning.

Summary: This study investigated the associations between metabolic profiles and cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (aHSCT). The results showed that lower levels of trimethylamine N-oxide were associated with subsequent CMV infection. Exploratory analysis also revealed other metabolic clusters associated with CMV infection.

Summary: This study investigated the change in induced cytokine concentrations after solid organ transplantation (SOT) and found that all stimuli except IL-10 showed decreased concentrations post-SOT. The study also found no difference in induced cytokine concentrations pre-SOT between recipients with or without acute rejection. This standardized assay may provide important information on immune function post-SOT.
