Background: The purpose of this study was to examine the differences in anthropometric measurements using an aerobic and Pilates exercise program which lasted 24 weeks. Method: This was a clinical intervention study of 303 women over the age of 60 living in Novi Sad, Serbia. Changes in body mass index and skinfold thickness were estimated through height, weight, and anthropometric measurements. The program comprised Pilates exercises for upper-and lower-body strength, agility, and aerobic capacity. Results: Fat mass (FM) improved significantly (pre-test, 32.89%, 8.65; post-test, 28.25%, 6.58; P<0.01). Bone diameters and muscle perimeters showed no significant changes pre- and post-test (P>0.05), but there was a higher correlation between FM (%) and waist-hip ratio (rho, 0.80; P<0.01). Conclusion: A mixed program of aerobics and Pilates, controls and improves baseline muscle mass and decreases FM values, without causing deterioration during practice and follow-up exercises.

Comparison of training and match load between metabolic and running speed metrics of professional Spanish soccer players by playing position

Berni Guerrero-Calderon, Jose Alfonso Morcillo, Marcos Chena, Alfonso Castillo-Rodriguez

Summary: This study compared the training and match load of professional soccer players according to their playing position and analyzed the relationship between metabolic and running speed metrics. The results showed significant differences between positions on match day, and different patterns were observed in training. The study suggests that both metabolic and traditional approaches should be used together for load monitoring in professional soccer players, and metabolic power events and the equivalent-distance index can help differentiate the characteristics of players based on their playing position.

Scoring first relevance in knockout promotion to Spanish LaLiga Smartbank

Marcos Olvera-Rojas, Pedro Femia-Marzo, Alfonso Castillo-Rodrguez

Summary: The aim of this study was to examine the effect of scoring first on promotion success in the Spanish Liga Smartbank knockout rounds. The sample consisted of all non-scoreless knockout rounds (n = 199) played between the 2004/2005 and 2018/2019 seasons. Data were analyzed using descriptive analysis, chi-square tests, and binary logistic regressions. The results showed a significant correlation between scoring first and advancing to the next round (chi(2) [1 df] = 32.37; p < .001). Teams that scored first as the home team advanced 61.7% of the time, while teams that scored first as the away team advanced 79.4% of the time (Total OR = 6.19). Additionally, the importance of gaining an advantage in the first-leg match and scoring first in the second-leg match was also found. This information is valuable for coaches and performance analysts, as it can be applied to competition strategies to prevent the opposing team from scoring and to find ways for their team to take the lead.
