Summary: With the global prevalence of obesity increasing dramatically, it has become a serious public health threat associated with comorbid conditions and psychological disorders. While lifestyle interventions and dietary adjustments may help with weight loss, maintaining these changes long-term can be challenging. Spices like turmeric, ginger, and pepper have shown promise in obesity management, with curcumin in particular gaining interest for its health benefits. Studies have shown potential favorable effects of curcumin supplementation on anthropometric indices, warranting further investigation for overweight or obese adults.

Summary: This study aims to develop formulas based on waist circumference (WC) and body mass index (BMI) to predict visceral adipose tissue (VAT) area and determine the cut-off values for central obesity in Indonesian men. The study included 32 middle-aged Indonesian men and used abdominal CT scans to measure VAT area, and anthropometric measurements to assess WC and BMI. Strong positive correlations were found between WC and VAT, as well as BMI and VAT. The formulas predicted WC of 88.5 cm and BMI of 23.9 kg/m(2) as the optimal cut-off values for central obesity in middle-aged Indonesian men.

Summary: This study found that both fat mass and lean mass index are positively associated with blood pressure levels, independently of other factors. Lean body mass is shown to be an important determinant of blood pressure levels, with a magnitude similar to fat mass. Excess muscle mass may not be beneficial to cardiovascular health.

Summary: This study found little evidence to support the protective effect of caffeine or coffee consumption against obesity, contradicting previous observational studies. It also highlights the dangers of ignoring genetic testing and relying solely on observational studies restricted to specific populations when making dietary policy recommendations.

Summary: This study found that newer anthropometric measures such as waist-to-height ratio, rather than body mass index (BMI), accurately predicted the risk of heart failure hospitalization and cardiovascular death in patients with heart failure. The study also showed a positive correlation between waist-to-height ratio and higher levels of obesity, as well as increased risk of heart failure hospitalization.

Summary: This study utilized Mendelian Randomization (MR) to explore the association between higher genetically predicted BMI, fat mass, fat free mass, weight, height, and waist:hip ratio and ECG measures. The findings indicate that higher genetically predicted BMI is associated with ECG indices that have been linked to arrhythmic risk, and this association is driven by fat mass, fat free mass, and height. These results can help stratify individuals for targeted weight management interventions, but the limitations include the predominantly European ancestry populations and the inability to determine the most important body size measure in driving the associations.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the comparative classification capabilities of different anthropometric indices and BIA results in determining obesity. The results highlighted the need to change current diagnostic criteria for obesity and suggested that body fat content measurement could be an effective indicator for diagnosis and screening of obesity.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the associations between different anthropometric measures and incident type 2 diabetes, and compare their predictive performance. The results showed that all markers except height and hip index were positively associated with type 2 diabetes. Waist to height ratio (WHtR) had the strongest associations and predictive ability for type 2 diabetes. Compared to BMI, WHtR and anthropometric risk index had better discrimination for type 2 diabetes risk.

Summary: This study compared the training and match load of professional soccer players according to their playing position and analyzed the relationship between metabolic and running speed metrics. The results showed significant differences between positions on match day, and different patterns were observed in training. The study suggests that both metabolic and traditional approaches should be used together for load monitoring in professional soccer players, and metabolic power events and the equivalent-distance index can help differentiate the characteristics of players based on their playing position.

Summary: This study explores the barriers faced by Spanish older adults in participating in physical exercise programs, based on their perceptions. The study finds that personal beliefs, socioeconomic and cultural differences in different contexts, and age all have an impact on exercise barriers. Gender differences are also observed, as men tend to face fewer barriers after retirement compared to women who continue to have family responsibilities and are affected by macho culture.

Summary: The aim of this study was to examine the effect of scoring first on promotion success in the Spanish Liga Smartbank knockout rounds. The sample consisted of all non-scoreless knockout rounds (n = 199) played between the 2004/2005 and 2018/2019 seasons. Data were analyzed using descriptive analysis, chi-square tests, and binary logistic regressions. The results showed a significant correlation between scoring first and advancing to the next round (chi(2) [1 df] = 32.37; p < .001). Teams that scored first as the home team advanced 61.7% of the time, while teams that scored first as the away team advanced 79.4% of the time (Total OR = 6.19). Additionally, the importance of gaining an advantage in the first-leg match and scoring first in the second-leg match was also found. This information is valuable for coaches and performance analysts, as it can be applied to competition strategies to prevent the opposing team from scoring and to find ways for their team to take the lead.
