Summary: The effectiveness of wildlife crossing structures on a new highway in eastern Australia is uncertain, as some species had higher presence in adjacent bushland compared to crossing structures, while others had higher presence in crossing structures compared to bushland. Therefore, increased use of experimental study designs is recommended to evaluate the effectiveness of such structures.

Summary: The compatibility of forestry and koala conservation was investigated in this study. Using a BACIPS design, the researchers found that selective harvesting had no significant effect on koala density, and koalas were able to maintain their density in both selective and heavy harvested areas.

Summary: This study systematically reviews how neuroscientific evidence is considered in sentencing decisions of New South Wales criminal courts. A comprehensive search on three databases identified 331 relevant sentencing decisions discussing neuroscientific evidence before 2016. The findings indicate that neuroscientific evidence appeared to contribute to sentencing decisions in less than half of the cases examined, with the majority supporting a more lenient sentence.

Summary: This study found that around 40.4% of students did not like to go to school alone and wanted someone from their family to accompany them. Additionally, about one quarter of students expressed fear of traffic and their inability to deal with it. Only 80.9% of students received some form of road safety training, with parents and schools being the major sources of this information. Ages under 14 and lower levels of mother's education were significant contributors to poor road crossing habits among students.

Summary: This study investigated trace metals, metalloids, and pesticides in leaf oyster soft tissue and shells, compared to sediment in five estuaries in northern New South Wales, Australia. Results showed higher concentrations of certain elements in sediments, while others bioaccumulated in the oyster tissue. The accumulation of metals and metalloids increased with oyster size and negatively impacted oyster condition, suggesting that leaf oysters are useful bioindicators for estuarine pollution.

Summary: The demand for intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIg) in Australia is increasing, mainly due to factors such as the number of patients, dosage, and treatment frequency. Measures are needed to effectively manage the supply of IVIg, including optimizing dosage, frequency, and treatment duration, and formal evaluation should be conducted to compare cost-effectiveness and efficacy.

Summary: Compression during normal continental-oceanic subduction leads to the development of a rugose subduction wedge landward of the trench within the marine forearc. Second order subduction events can disrupt these processes over several millions of years and elicit depositional responses that are discordant within the forearc stratigraphy. The synchronicity, long-term cyclicity and regional extent of these stratigraphic changes indicate that regional tectonism underpinned deposition.

Summary: The study investigated the distribution of marula trees in different land-use types within the savanna woodlands of South Africa, finding the highest tree density in homestead yards, linked to discarded kernels from beer making. Over 15 years, total density increased in yards but declined in rangelands, with female densities remaining constant. The research indicates that overharvesting and tree felling may negatively impact population stability in the long term.

Summary: Climatic variables significantly impact agricultural production, making accurate knowledge of these variables essential for policy formulation. The Bureau of Meteorology monitored various climatic variables in New South Wales, Australia, but the placement of monitoring stations was not systematic. This study aims to optimize the monitoring network and minimize prediction error.

Summary: The Qinling-Daba Mountains are the main body of China's North-South Transitional Zone. Analysis of the vegetation components' gradual variation from north to south is crucial for understanding the zone's structural diversity. The results of this study show that there is a mixture of northern and southern plant species and formations only in the south flank of eastern Qinling Mts., which serves as a suitable dividing line between China's warm temperate and subtropical zones.

Summary: This study examined the use of e-cigarettes by adults who smoke or have recently quit and the demographic characteristics associated with their use. The results showed an increase in e-cigarette use among young adults, with the main reasons being to help quit smoking and to reduce the number of cigarettes smoked.

Summary: This paper presents an interdisciplinary study of the ancient landscape of the Trieste Karst in north-eastern Italy. Airborne Laser Scanning (ALS) was used to obtain high-resolution topography and identify potential archaeological anomalies. The results revealed an unknown Roman landscape with important public roads and large country estates. The study also demonstrated effective approaches for the identification and dating of Roman roads in karst environments.

Summary: The study found significant differences in landscape characteristics around highly effective wildlife crossing structures and low-effective ones. The widespread distribution of statutory protected areas and a low ratio of MSPA edge within 1 km(2) are key features of highly effective WCS.

Summary: This study describes the population characteristics of people with intellectual disability in New South Wales and quantifies and compares public mental health service use and costs for people with and without intellectual disability during 2014-15. It found that people with intellectual disability used public mental health services to a greater degree than other people, with higher costs per person. The study suggests that all tiers of mental health policy and service planning in Australia should explicitly consider people with intellectual disability.
