The teahouse market has seen an expansion across various countries. In order to identify the most reasonable paths for development, the choice of location for the outlets needs to account for a number of conflicting criteria. Therefore, the multicriteria approach is required to effectively handle the location selection problem. In this paper, we develop a multicriteria framework for teahouse selection and apply it in the context of Lithuania. The indicator system is set up in order to capture the different aspects of the candidate locations. We also apply two multicriteria decision-making techniques (the evaluation based on distance from average solution (EDAS) method and the weighted aggregated sum product assessment with normalization (WASPAS-N) method) in order to ensure the robustness of the results. The weights of criteria were determined based on the expert survey. In addition, a Monte Carlo simulation was applied to check the sensitivity in changes of the criterion weights. The empirical application demonstrated validity of the proposed approach in choosing the optimal location of a teahouse.

Does the energy-related greenhouse gas emission abatement cost depend on the optimization direction: shadow pricing based on the weak disposability technology in the European Union agriculture

Justas Streimikis, Z. Y. Shen, Tomas Balezentis

Summary: The European Green Deal and similar strategies aim to improve sustainability in agriculture through public support programs. This paper examines the costs of sustainable energy use in agriculture using the shadow price approach and explores the sensitivity of shadow price analysis to different optimization directions. By using country-level data and data envelopment analysis, the study quantifies the shadow prices of energy-related greenhouse gas emissions and constructs marginal abatement cost curves. The findings highlight the spatial and temporal variation in environmental performance, emphasizing the need for tailored support programs.

How energy transition promotes pollution abatement in China's industrial sector

Haiyan Deng, Ziqiong Song, Tomas Balezentis, Zhiyang Shen

Summary: This paper models the production process using a novel by-production approach and ensures the linkage between economic and environmental sub-technologies. It adjusts the byproduction Data Envelopment Analysis model to obtain positive shadow prices and derives the shadow prices of carbon dioxide emissions for province-level industrial sector data in China from 1997 to 2019. The findings show that the shadow price of carbon has increased over time, indicating the effectiveness of policymakers' efforts in reducing carbon emissions in manufacturing. The significant variation in shadow prices across provinces can be explained by factors such as carbon productivity, non-fossil energy consumption, and urbanization rate.

The Relationship between Energy Consumption and Economic Growth in the Baltic Countries' Agriculture: A Non-Linear Framework

Daiva Makuteniene, Algirdas Justinas Staugaitis, Bernardas Vaznonis, Gunta Grinberga-Zalite

Summary: The development of a country's economy is closely linked to its energy use in economic sectors. The energy-environmental Kuznets curve (EEKC) is often used to analyze the potential and challenges of sustainable development, green economy, and green growth. This study examines the relationship between energy consumption and economic growth in the Baltic States from 1995 to 2019, with a focus on the agriculture sector. The research findings show that energy use stabilizes as gross value added increases, but there is insufficient evidence to support the inverse U-shaped relationship proposed by the EEKC hypothesis.

Development of Social Welfare Policies in the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) Countries: Globalization and Democracy

Sarah Hakeem, Saghir Pervaiz Ghauri, Rizwan Raheem Ahmed, Dalia Streimikiene, Justas Streimikis

Summary: This study expands the discussion on social spending in developing countries by examining the social policy reactions of democratic and non-democratic regimes in SAARC countries to globalization. The results show support for both efficiency and compensation theories, depending on the type of globalization indicator considered. However, it is not accurate to assume that the efficiency thesis applies to all developing countries. The analysis of SAARC countries using TSCS data technique reveals that trade openness tends to increase social spending, while financial openness tends to reduce it, and the role of democracy in counterbalancing these effects is not significant.

The impact of e-commerce and R&D on firm-level production in China: Evidence from manufacturing sector

Facang Zhu, Qiule Shi, Tomas Balezentis, Chonghui Zhang

Summary: E-commerce provides opportunities to extend the market and plays a vital role in modern economy. This study analyzes the impact of e-commerce and R&D on firm output in China's manufacturing sector. The findings suggest that both e-commerce and R&D have a positive effect on output growth, with R&D being more influential. The inter-industry network externalities of e-commerce have a significant positive impact on production growth, while the intra-industry network externalities are significantly negative, indicating a potential reduction in output for certain companies.

Biomass use and its implications for bioeconomy development: A resource efficiency perspective for the European countries

Neringa Ramanauske, Tomas Balezentis, Dalia Streimikiene

Summary: Increasing population and economic growth have resulted in higher demand for food, livestock feed, and energy, leading to negative impacts on the environment and climate change. Tensions and price fluctuations in international material supply chains are posing challenges. Limited availability of biomass requires increasing efficiency in its use and comparing it with non-biomass resources. This study analyzes the use of biomass and non-biomass resources in selected European countries, finding higher efficiency in biomass use and the need for decoupling material consumption and economic growth.

How to improve the resilience of power generation from energy intensity perspective? Evidence from the generalized Divisia index approach

Yaxian Wang, Tomas Balezentis

Summary: As the share of renewable energy increases in the energy-mix, tracking the dynamics and determinants of energy intensity (EI) is a crucial issue in energy economics related to power resilience. A novel generalized Divisia index (GDI) model combined with the Tapio index is proposed to decompose the intensity factors, with a case study of China's power sector from 2000 to 2020. The results show that although energy efficiency has improved during the period of 2000-2020, the complexity of reducing EI has increased from 2006-2010 to 2016-2020, and provincial EI exhibits a distribution trend of high in the north and low in the south, high in the east and low in the west. The decomposition results indicate that energy consumption is the main factor contributing to EI increase, while energy structure and technology are the major forces contributing to EI mitigation. Most provinces show a decoupling status between power output/energy consumption and EI, but the decoupling situation is unstable and the difficulty of decoupling has increased since 2016-2020.
