The paper gives new insights into the environmental taxation policy, demonstrating the existence of an inverse U-shaped relationship between environmental taxation and income in European countries. Our findings reveal this relationship to be influenced by enforcement of the rule of law, which contributes to shifting the turning point on the curve to lower income levels. We show that former transition economies have not reached the turning point due to weak institutions. To achieve the goal of sustainable development, the European Environment Agency's Environmental Taxation Reform, proposing to shift taxation from goods to bads, should be accompanied by effective enforcement or the rule of law. The heterogeneity found between market-based and former transition European countries demonstrates the existence of problems at the EU-level in the coordination of environmental policies and enforcing the rule of law. In addition, the analysis of the determinants of environmental taxation points to the importance of factors related to consumption and production, governance, environmental quality, oil price shocks and the shift of environmental policy in European countries.

Demand drivers and changes in food-related emissions in the UK: A decomposition approach

Beatrice Biondi, Concetta Castiglione, Mario Mazzocchi

Summary: Greenhouse gas emissions related to UK food consumption have significantly decreased over the past 20 years, primarily driven by reductions in household food budgets and evolving food preferences. While relative price dynamics and demographic trends have a smaller impact, policy interventions targeting consumer preferences could be an effective tool in further reducing food-related emissions.

Public support for performing arts. Efficiency and productivity gains in eleven European countries

Concetta Castiglione, Davide Infante, Marta Zieba

Summary: This paper investigates the importance of public cultural expenditure for the efficiency and productivity of the performing arts (PA) firms. The empirical results show that PA firms are technically inefficient and could increase their artistic output between 32 and 42% through improving efficiency. The study also finds that public spending on culture increases the efficiency of PA firms, contrary to the common belief.

Live and digital engagement with the visual arts

Victoria Ateca-Amestoy, Concetta Castiglione

Summary: The innovations brought about by information and communication technology (ICT) are dramatically changing the way visual arts are produced and consumed. A study using the 2012 USA Survey of Public Participation in the Arts found that age does not play a role in the form of visual arts consumed, but there are differences based on race, gender, family background, and occupation. Furthermore, the study discovered a trade-off between online and onsite visits, with online attendance being a way for consumers to overcome time constraints and costs associated with visiting physical museums.

Do female managers perform better? Evidence from Italian manufacturing firms

Concetta Castiglione, Davide Infante, Janna Smirnova

Summary: The study found that the presence of women in boards of directors positively influences firms' productivity, especially in the manufacturing sector. Geographical location plays a role in the productivity differential of female managed firms. Female and mixed managed firms are more productive compared to male only managed firms.
