Bioefficacy of leaf and root extracts of Aristolochia tagala Cham. at different concentrations was evaluated at room temperature against Spodoptera litura Fab. Effects on feeding, larvicidal and pupicidal activities and larval-pupal duration were studied. Higher antifeedant activity (56.06%), lethal concentration for feeding inhibition (3.69%), larvicidal (40.66%), pupicidal (28%), total mortality (68.66%) and prolonged larval-pupal duration (12.04-13.08 days) were observed in ethyl acetate leaf extract at 5.0% concentration. Dose dependant effect of test extracts was observed. This plant could be used to isolate active principles and to develop a new botanical formulation in pest management programmes. Computational analysis of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in PPAR gamma associated with obesity, diabetes and cancer

Antony Stalin, Ding Lin, Johnson Josephine Princy, Yue Feng, Haiping Xiang, Savarimuthu Ignacimuthu, Yuan Chen

Summary: Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) are common genetic variations in human genomes and act as markers for susceptibility to complex traits and diseases. This study focused on the non-synonymous SNPs (nsSNPs) in the PPARG gene, which plays a role in lipid metabolism and insulin production. Mutations in PPARG were found to be associated with cancer, insulin resistance, and lipodystrophy, and molecular dynamics simulations showed significant differences in protein structure compared to the wild-type PPARG.

Pachaiyappan Saravana Kumar, Gopal Nattudurai, Villianur Ibrahim Hairul Islam, Savarimuthu Ignacimuthu

Summary: Foods contaminated with fungi and their toxins can cause infections in developing countries. Due to the resistance of fungal pathogens to current antifungal agents, there is a need to find new environmentally friendly antimicrobial agents. Plant essential oils, which contain antifungal volatile substances, have the potential to replace chemical fungicides in food protection.

Mosquitocidal efficacy of embelin and its derivatives against Aedes aegypti L. and Culex quinquefasciatus Say. (Diptera: Culicidae) and computational analysis of acetylcholinesterase 1 (AChE1) inhibition

Antony Stalin, Appadurai Daniel Reegan, Munusamy Rajiv Gandhi, R. R. Saravanan, Kedike Balakrishna, Abd El-Latif Hesham, Savarimuthu Ignacimuthu, Ying Zhang

Summary: Embelin and its derivatives, 6-bromoembelin and vilangin, showed strong mosquitocidal activities against larvae and pupae of Aedes aegypti and Culex quinquefasciatus. Among them, vilangin exhibited the highest larvicidal activity. The histopathological results revealed that vilangin caused significant damage to the midgut of mosquito larvae and impaired the peritrophic membrane. The molecular docking and molecular dynamics studies further demonstrated the effectiveness of vilangin in inhibiting acetylcholinesterase activity.

Selenium: a potent regulator of ferroptosis and biomass production

Muthusamy Ramakrishnan, Jaison Arivalagan, Lakkakula Satish, Manikandan Mohan, Johnson Retnaraj Samuel Selvan Christyraj, Sam Aldrin Chandran, Ho-Jong Ju, Anoopa L. John, Thiyagarajan Ramesh, Savarimuthu Ignacimuthu, Kalimuthu Kalishwaralal

Summary: Emerging evidence suggests that selenium plays a beneficial role in plant development and is considered an essential micronutrient. Selenium promotes plant physiological processes and offers stress resistance. Ferroptosis, a unique form of regulated cell death, is prevented by selenium supplementation. More research is needed on plant-specific ferroptosis and selenium-mediated nanofertilizers for large-scale plant biomass production.

Comparative analysis of the mitochondrial genome of Hypospila bolinoides and Lygephila dorsigera (Lepidoptera: Noctuoidea: Erebidae), with implications for their phylogeny

Muzafar Riyaz, Rauf Ahmad Shah, Ignacimuthu Savarimuthu, Sivasankaran Kuppusamy

Summary: This study sequenced the mitogenomes of two species from the family Erebidae and found that despite different lengths, their gene orders were identical, and both genomes contained 13 protein-coding genes, 22 tRNA genes, 2 rRNA genes, and an A+T-rich region. Phylogenomic analysis revealed that the superfamily Noctuoidea has a well-supported monophyletic relationship with Notodontidae, Erebidae, Nolidae, Euteliidae, and Noctuidae, and L. dorsigera should be classified within the subfamily Toxocampinae instead of Erebinae.

S. Antony Ceasar, S. Ignacimuthu

Summary: Genome editing tools based on CRISPR/Cas system have the potential to solve agricultural issues and improve food production. The use of genetic engineering in agriculture has allowed for the introduction of specific traits in crops, while CRISPR/Cas system offers a more precise technique for targeted modification of genes in the host plant genome. The delivery of CRISPR reagents has the potential to overcome limitations with traditional transformation methods and produce transgene-free plants. The CRISPR/Cas system is expected to play a key role in future crop breeding.
