Summary: Controversy exists regarding the benefits of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) and antidepressants for women experiencing depressive symptoms during or after menopause. A network meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) showed that fluoxetine plus oral HRT was associated with the largest improvement in depressive symptoms compared to placebos in menopausal women, particularly those with a definite diagnosis of depression. However, no pharmacological or hormone replacement therapy was better than placebo in post-menopausal women or those without a depression diagnosis. This study provides evidence supporting the use of fluoxetine plus HRT for menopausal women with depression.

Summary: The meta-analysis presented in this article demonstrates the effectiveness of red clover isoflavones in relieving menopausal symptoms, particularly reducing hot flushes in perimenopausal and postmenopausal women. Further well-designed studies are needed to confirm these findings and determine the overall effects of red clover on flushing episodes.

Summary: Poor sleep is a reality for many midlife women experiencing menopause, and the present study aimed to determine the association between menopausal symptoms and night-to-night sleep variability among peri- and post-menopausal women. The findings suggest that menopausal symptoms are associated with sleep variability, specifically wakefulness, highlighting the importance of targeting wakefulness in sleep interventions for menopausal women.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between dietary consumption of various nutrients and headaches in middle-aged women. It found that higher intake of isoflavones was associated with a lower frequency of headaches in peri- and post-menopausal women, suggesting that a diet rich in isoflavones may help improve headaches in middle-aged women.

Summary: This umbrella review systematically identified the peri-operative risk factors associated with post-operative cognitive dysfunction (POCD) through meta-analyses of observational studies. The review included 11 meta-analyses comprising 73 risk factors in a total population of 67,622 participants. Pre-operative risk factors were most commonly examined and there was limited evidence suggesting associations between two risk factors (pre-operative age and pre-operative diabetes) and POCD. Further large-scale studies across different surgery types are recommended due to the limited overall strength of the evidence.
