Summary: This study retrospectively analyzed data of rectal cancer patients undergoing anterior resection and found that being male and having T3-T4 stage were independent risk factors for anastomotic leakage (AL). Additionally, defunctioning stoma (DS) was found to reduce the occurrence of symptomatic AL.

Summary: The study evaluated the impact of pelvic dimensions on the risk of anastomotic leak in rectal cancer patients. The results showed that pelvic inlet and intertuberous distance were independent predictors for postoperative anastomotic leak. The incorporation of pelvic dimensions with other factors in the nomogram may provide a clinical tool for predicting anastomotic leak.

Summary: This study aimed to explore the risk factors of anastomotic leakage (AL) after laparoscopic anterior resection (AR) of rectal cancer and established a prediction model to assess its occurrence probability. By analyzing the clinical and surgical data of patients, it was found that factors such as male gender, tumor distance from the anus verge, tumor growth pattern, operation time, and whether diverting stoma was performed were associated with the occurrence of AL. The established prediction model based on these factors can effectively predict the probability of AL.

Summary: This retrospective multicentre study aimed to assess the anastomotic leak rate after restorative surgery for rectal cancer, identify independent risk factors, and develop a clinical prediction model. The study found that factors such as sex, body mass index, tumour location, type of approach, and number of cartridges employed were independent risk factors for anastomotic leak. While a stoma did not reduce the leak rate, it significantly decreased the severity of leaks and reoperation rate.

Summary: The study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of transanal drainage tube (TDT) placement for preventing anastomotic leakage after low anterior resection for rectal cancer. The results showed that in randomized controlled trials, TDT was not associated with a significant difference in anastomotic leakage but increased the risk of anastomotic bleeding. In observational studies, TDT was significantly associated with a reduction in anastomotic leakage and no significant difference in anastomotic bleeding. Both types of studies demonstrated a comparable reduction in reoperation rate with TDT. These findings suggest that TDTs may not have superiority and highlight the differences between randomized controlled trials and observational data.

Summary: This study retrospectively analyzed data from 556 patients with rectal cancer and found that the placement of a transanal drainage tube (TDT) can reduce the occurrence of anastomotic leakage (AL) following low anterior resection (LAR). Logistic analysis identified the non-use of a TDT as a risk factor for AL.

Summary: This study identified eight factors that may affect the incidence of anastomotic leakage (AL) after rectal cancer surgery. By creating a predictive random forest classifier based on these factors, the model demonstrated satisfactory prediction efficacy, with a higher efficiency compared to the traditional nomogram. The findings provide valuable insight for clinicians in risk assessment and decision-making regarding the use of temporary stoma to reduce complications.

Summary: The incidence of early-onset colorectal cancer is increasing globally, with unique clinical, pathological, and molecular characteristics compared to late-onset disease. While genetic predisposition plays a role, most cases are sporadic and the full spectrum of implicated sequence variations remains unknown. Potential risk factors include a Westernized diet, obesity, antibiotic usage, and alterations in the gut microbiome. Despite early-onset patients being more likely to receive treatment, their oncological outcomes are comparable to older patients.

Summary: This study presents a phase IIa clinical biomarker trial of colorectal cancer (CRC) survivors treated with a polyamine-inhibitory regimen. The intervention successfully reduced dietary arginine intake and plasma arginine levels, but did not affect rectal tissue polyamine levels. These findings suggest that further research is needed to explore alternative strategies for tertiary prevention of CRC.
