Summary: The aim of this study is to determine if the incorporation of perineural invasion (PNI) into the T-classification could improve the prognostic performance of TNM-8. It performed an international, multicenter study on 1049 patients with oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma from 1994 to 2018. The results showed that PNI was significantly associated with disease-specific survival and integrating PNI into the staging system improved the model compared to T-category alone.

Summary: This study retrospectively assessed the prognostic and clinical implications of the eighth edition of the TNM staging system in oral cancer treatment. The results demonstrate that incorporating depth of invasion and extranodal extension into staging can provide more accurate prognostic evaluation for patients and determine the need for adjuvant therapy.

Summary: This study compared the impact of the 8th edition of the TNM staging system with the 7th edition for oral tongue tumors, finding that the 8th edition provides a more accurate prediction of overall and disease-specific survival. Patients re-staged to pT3 due to depth of infiltration should be considered for more aggressive treatment.

Summary: This study investigated the prognosis of skip metastasis in papillary thyroid carcinoma patients and proposed a more appropriate N staging. The results showed that patients with skip metastasis had significantly lower recurrence rates compared to those with central lymph node metastasis. Therefore, skip metastasis could be categorized as N1a stage according to the AJCC TNM staging system.

Summary: The study evaluated the predictive value of staging and grading parameters for patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma, finding depth of invasion as the strongest predictor of metastatic tumor growth, overall survival, and relapse-free survival. Other histologic grading parameters may also provide valuable indications of a tumor's aggressiveness, but further exploration is needed to determine exact site, mode, and procedure.

Summary: The prognostic value of bile duct invasion (BDI) in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) remains controversial. This study found that BDI is an independent risk factor for overall survival (OS) in HCC patients undergoing R0 resection. Adjusted staging systems incorporating BDI status showed improved predictive performance compared to current staging systems, which may facilitate clinical decision-making.

Summary: The study evaluated the prognostic impact of vascular invasion (VI) in colon cancer compared to nodal (N) stage and introduced a new TNVM staging system that includes VI. Results showed that VI in colon cancer had a similar prognostic impact as the N2 stage without VI, and incorporating the V-stage into conventional TNM staging improved prognostic prediction.

Summary: This study found that perineural invasion has significant prognostic value in colorectal cancer, not limited to stage II. Patients with stage II combined with perineural invasion have similar survival rates to those with stage III. Therefore, perineural invasion is an important prognostic factor in colorectal cancer.

Summary: This retrospective multicenter study aimed to evaluate the accuracy of linear endoscopic ultrasound (L-EUS) and contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CECT) in preoperative gastric cancer (GC) staging. The results showed that L-EUS had a higher diagnostic accuracy than CECT for depth of invasion (T staging) and nodal involvement (N staging) of GC. L-EUS had an accuracy of 100%, 60%, 74%, and 80% for T1, T2, T3, and T4, respectively, while CECT had an accuracy of 78%, 55%, 45%, and 10%. L-EUS also had a higher accuracy for N staging (85%) compared to CECT (61%).

Summary: Surgery is often the preferred treatment for locoregional recurrences of well-differentiated thyroid carcinomas, but other therapies can be considered on an individual basis. These patients have prolonged survival, but may require long periods of active disease and subsequent treatments. This review discusses various treatment options for well-differentiated thyroid cancer, including surgery, active surveillance, radioactive iodine therapy, and more.

Summary: In head and neck cancer surgery, complete removal of the tumor is necessary for optimal therapy, but this is challenging in vulnerable areas with potential functional limitations. Various imaging techniques can assist in distinguishing tumor from healthy tissue and aid in achieving complete tumor removal. This paper provides an overview of imaging techniques for oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma and discusses the potential for optimizing surgical outcomes.

Summary: This study retrospectively analyzed the outcomes of head and neck lymphedema management at an Australian institution using the MDACC and ALOHA assessments. The results showed that surgery and manual lymphatic drainage were the most common treatment modalities. Some patients experienced small but significant improvements according to the ALOHA assessment, however, the proportion of patients with post-treatment improvements on the MDACC scale was low.

Summary: The purpose of this overview is to evaluate the evidence on salivary biomarkers for the diagnosis of head and neck cancer. Using the PICOS model, eligibility criteria and the focused review question: are liquid biopsies (saliva biomarkers) reliable for cancer detection in H&N cancer patients were developed. Electronic database search included PubMed, EMBASE, Scopus, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, and LILACS. Risk of Bias (RoB) was assessed using AMSTAR 2. Recent findings: a total of 20 SRs were included. Only seven SRs were able to reach more solid conclusions by calculating the pooled sensitivity, specificity, and the overall area under the curve (AUC). Despite limitations, significant RoB, and lack of test metrics in primary studies, all SRs acknowledge and encourage the potential role of saliva in early diagnosis of oral cancer.

Summary: This study aimed to quantify the reduction in surgical activity for indeterminate thyroid nodules during the COVID-19 pandemic and evaluate whether delays in surgery led to an increased occurrence of aggressive tumors. The study found a significant reduction in surgeries during the pandemic and observed an increased occurrence of larger tumors, lymph node metastases, and high-risk tumors during the decrease phase. The study suggests that surgery for indeterminate thyroid nodules should not be postponed even during future pandemic escalations.

Summary: This study aimed to review the presentation, management, and outcomes of primary cervical pediatric neuroblastoma cases at a single tertiary care center. The results showed that cervical neuroblastomas can be effectively treated with chemotherapy and surgical intervention along with various adjuvant therapies. Summary: Drug resistance is a major hurdle in the treatment of mucoepidermoid carcinomas (MEC), mainly due to the presence of cancer stem cells (CSC). In this study, the effects of NFkB inhibitor emetine and HDAC inhibitor SAHA on MEC CSC were investigated. The findings suggest that low concentrations of emetine and SAHA are more effective in disrupting CSC, while emetine in combination with CDDP is an effective therapy for non-CSC MEC tumor cells.
