Amplification of the status quo bias among physicians making medical decisions

Adrian R. Camilleri, Sunita Sah

Summary: The study found that experts, specifically physicians, are more likely to be influenced by status quo bias when making decisions in their field of expertise, leading to an amplification of the bias. This has important implications for practice as it suggests that experts may need to be more aware of this bias and take steps to mitigate its effects.

THE PROFESSIONALISM PARADOX: A SENSE OF PROFESSIONALISM INCREASES VULNERABILITY TO CONFLICTS OF INTEREST

Sunita Sah

Summary: Professionalism is highly valued in the workplace, but it may have a dark side. A strong belief in professionalism can paradoxically lead to unethical behavior and conflicts of interest. This article suggests integrating both intrinsic and extrinsic approaches, and redefining professionalism as a set of consistently repeated practices rather than a character trait.

When Science Becomes Embroiled in Conflict: Recognizing the Public's Need for Debate while Combating Conspiracies and Misinformation

Stephan Lewandowsky, Konstantinos Armaos, Hendrik Bruns, Philipp Schmid, Dawn Liu Holford, Ulrike Hahn, Ahmed Al-Rawi, Sunita Sah, John Cook

Summary: This article explores the common attributes of political conflicts where scientific findings play a central role, using the COVID-19 pandemic, climate change, and vaccines as examples. The analysis focuses on situations where the spread of disinformation or conspiracy theories undermines public trust in scientists and hinders evidence-based policymaking. It also discusses cases where opposition to scientifically grounded policies arises from legitimate value judgments and personal experiences. The authors advocate for the prompt recognition of politically motivated science denial and the immunization of the public against its detrimental effects.

Patient responses to physician disclosures of industry conflicts of interest: A randomized field experiment

Susannah L. Rose, Sunita Sah, Raed Dweik, Cory Schmidt, MaryBeth Mercer, Ariane Mitchum, Michael Kattan, Matthew Karafa, Christopher Robertson

Summary: The study showed that disclosing physicians' financial conflicts of interest can improve patients' awareness of these relationships but does not significantly affect patients' trust in their physician or hospital, nor does it impact appointment attendance rates. Additionally, framing these financial relationships in terms of risks and benefits did not result in any significant outcomes.
