Summary: A scoping review was conducted to examine the existing literature on topical therapies for malignant fungating wounds pain management. The results showed that most of the studies included non-systematic reviews and case studies, with only a few clinical trials. Further primary studies are needed to inform evidence-based practice.

Summary: Metronidazole gel or ointment is recommended for treating malodour in malignant fungating wounds, but may not work well in oral lesions due to discomfort and being washed out by saliva. Here we report a case where malodour caused by an oral lesion was effectively controlled with sprayed metronidazole.

Summary: This qualitative study explored the experiences and roles of clinicians treating patients with malignant fungating wounds from a multidisciplinary perspective. Three themes emerged: optimizing fragmented care, collaboration between oncology and wound care, and transitioning from curative to palliative care. The study highlights the importance of recognizing when collaboration between specialties is essential for providing the best care for patients.

Summary: In this study, skin-inspired multilayer Janus composite nanofibrous membranes were designed and prepared as wound dressings with superhydrophilicity and superhydrophobicity. The membranes were investigated for their wettability, morphology, in-vitro release, cytotoxicity, antimicrobial activity, and healing effect. Results from animal experiments and histological analysis demonstrated that the composite membranes were more effective in improving the healing of full-thickness defect wounds and promoting the growth of collagen fibers and collagen deposition. The composite membranes consisted of a drug-loading layer with a superhydrophilic surface for self-pumping and drugs backflow, a hydrophobic polyvinylidene fluoride layer for delaying exudates loss, and a superhydrophobic coating with self-cleaning properties for avoiding the adhesion of foreign microorganisms.

Summary: This article introduces a wearable intelligent wound dressing (IWD) that integrates functions such as wound exudate management, sensor monitoring, closed-loop therapy, and flexible circuit modules to achieve synergy in wound treatment. The dressing can monitor the state of the wound and release drugs as needed, accelerating wound healing.

Summary: This study proposes a multifunctional dressing for the management of diabetic wounds. The dressing has rapid moisture-drained and non-adhesive properties, as well as pH-responsive and antibacterial capabilities. Wound monitoring can be easily conducted using a smartphone integrated with Python-RGB programs. Experimental results show that the dressing has a superior pro-healing rate, collagen deposition, and angiogenesis compared to commercial gauze.

Summary: Chronic wounds have a negative impact on individuals' quality of life, and odour is a well-known associated factor. This systematic review examines the effectiveness of topical interventions in managing the odour of chronic and malignant fungating wounds. The review suggests that while metronidazole may provide some improvement, there is a lack of standardized outcomes and robust clinical trials in this area. Further research is needed to evaluate the potential of metronidazole and other interventions in controlling wound odour.

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of a novel odour transferrer on malodour generated by malignant fungating wounds in head and neck cancer patients. The results showed that the odour score decreased significantly after application of the odour transferrer, indicating its effectiveness in reducing bad odours for patients, their families, and medical staff.
