Summary: The prevalence and severity of erosive esophagitis (EE) increase after laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG). Male gender and post-operative hiatal hernia are independent factors for an increased severity of EE after LSG. The incidence of severe EE after LSG is low for patients without pre-operative EE or grade A EE at baseline.

Summary: The study evaluated the association between reflux esophagitis and fatigue, finding no statistically significant association between reflux esophagitis and daytime sleepiness, fatigue, anxiety, or depression. However, fatigue was associated with GERD symptoms, being women, anxiety, and depression. Further research is needed to clarify the relationship between fatigue and reflux esophagitis.

Summary: The study found a significant correlation between salivary pepsin concentrations and erosive esophagitis (EE), indicating that it may serve as a useful indicator to determine whether asymptomatic patients with low salivary pepsin require esophago-gastro-duodenoscopy (EGD) after laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) to detect any potential complications.

Summary: This study investigated the prevalence of pediatric non-erosive esophageal phenotypes (NEEPs) and their treatment response. The results showed that functional heartburn may be the most common pediatric NEEP. Long-term follow-up revealed a higher rate of symptom resolution with proton pump inhibitor (PPI) therapy in non-erosive reflux disease (NERD) patients, while other groups did not benefit from extended acid-suppressive treatment.

Summary: This study identifies multiple risk factors for erosive esophagitis (EE), including age, ethnicity, unmarried status, long-term gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), metabolic diseases, hiatal hernia, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). In contrast, Helicobacter pylori infection and atrophic gastritis are shown to have a protective effect. These findings provide a better understanding of the characteristics and burden of EE.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the correlation between the incidence of non-erosive reflux disease (NERD) and psychological factors, especially somatoform disorders, and investigate the characteristics of gut microbiome in NERD patients. The study found that NERD symptoms overlap with somatoform disorders and have an impact on patients' daily life quality. Additionally, the diversity of gut microbiome in NERD patients is significantly higher than in healthy controls and is associated with the presence of somatoform disorders.

Summary: This study evaluated the clinical outcomes and prognostic factors of elderly patients undergoing endoscopic submucosal dissection or surgical resection for superficial esophageal cancer. The results identified cancer history of other organs, American Society of Anesthesiologists performance status, and presence of lymphovascular involvement as independent risk factors for poor overall survival. These risk factors could be useful in predicting the long-term prognosis of elderly patients with superficial esophageal cancer.

Summary: This study comprehensively evaluated the efficacy of various endoscopic and surgical treatments for gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). The results showed that endoscopic plication, reinforcement of the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), and surgical fundoplication were effective in reducing the requirement of proton pump inhibitor (PPI) continuation compared to PPI therapy. Radiofrequency energy delivery also tended to reduce the requirement of PPI continuation. All endoscopic and surgical treatments were superior to PPI therapy in terms of GERD-health-related quality of life questionnaire score (GERD-HRQL).

Using both an IGRA and tuberculin skin test (TST) in IBD patients on IST may improve the diagnosis rate of latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI).

Summary: Endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) is a standard treatment for early gastric cancer (EGC), but non-curative resection (NCR) after ESD can pose challenges. We aimed to develop a machine-learning (ML)-based NCR prediction model for EGC prior to ESD, with the XGBoost model showing the highest performance. This ML model can provide valuable information for making treatment decisions for EGC prior to ESD.

Summary: This study suggests that the long non-coding RNA UC.145 may serve as a potential novel biomarker for the diagnosis, prognosis, and prediction of gastric cancer. UC.145 regulates the expression of DKK1 through the interaction with PRKG1-AS1 and EZH2, and is involved in the canonical Wnt signaling pathway. Inactivation of UC.145 induces apoptosis and inhibits the growth and migratory, invasive, and colony-forming abilities of gastric cancer cells.
