Background: Severe depression may be accompanied by immune dysregulation and is also associated with increased risk of coronary artery disease (CAD). Objectives: We investigated serum levels of to cytokines and their relationship with depression in patients with cardiovascular diseases as well as healthy subjects in northeast of Iran. Patients and Methods: The study was carried out on 462 subjects (120 healthy subjects and 342 candidates undergoing angiography). The healthy subjects were referred for routine annual checkups or pre-employment examinations; they did not have clinically evident CAD. A questionnaire was used to obtain demographic data and the Beck depression inventory (BDI) was applied to assess depression. The Evidence Investigator (R) platform was used for cytokines assays for IL-1 alpha, IL-1 beta, IL-2, IL-4, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, TNIF-alpha, MCP-1 and IFNI-gamma, using sandwich chemiluminescent method. The statistical analysis was performed using SPSS version 11.5. Results: The mean age was 53.3 +/- 11.5, 54.8 +/- 11.3, and 59.5 +/- 11.3 in healthy; angiography (-), and angiography (+) subjects, respectively (P < 0.05). There were significant differences in serum levels of IL-4, IL-6, IL-10, and MCP-1 cytokines, comparing subjects with CAD and healthy persons (P < 0.05). When all subjects were divided to with and without depression regardless of their cardiovascular status, there was a significant difference in serum levels of IL-8 and IL-6 between the groups (P < 0.05). When the subgroup with features of CAD was selected and divided to those with and without depression, there was also a significant difference in serum levels of IL-8 and INF-alpha (P < 0.05). Conclusions: The positive interaction between depression and CAD was probably mediated by inflammatory mechanisms.

Application of the Truncated Zero-Inflated Double Poisson for Determining of the Effecting Factors on the Number of Coronary Artery Stenosis

Arezoo Orooji, Toktam Sahranavard, Mohammad-Taghi Shakeri, Mohammad Tajfard, Seyed Ehsan Saffari

Summary: This paper investigates the risk factors of the number of vessels with obstructive coronary artery disease and proposes a novel statistical model. The study finds significant associations between BMI, gender, and the count of obstructive vessels. The proposed model demonstrates better goodness-of-fit compared to conventional regression models.

Summary: Cancer is a major global health challenge, and early detection of tumors is crucial for reducing mortality rates. MicroRNAs, particularly miR-217, play key roles in cell regulation and can serve as non-invasive diagnostic markers in cancer patients. miR-217 functions by regulating transcription factors and targeting important signaling pathways in various cancers, making it a promising therapeutic target in cancer therapy.

Nano-sized polystyrene plastics toxicity to microalgae Chlorella vulgaris: Toxicity mitigation using humic acid

Parichehr Hanachi, Mehdi Khoshnamvand, Tony R. Walker, Amir Hossein Hamidian

Summary: The presence of natural organic matter (NOM), modeled by humic acid (HA), can mitigate the acute toxicity of amino-functionalized polystyrene nanoplastics (PS-NH2) to green microalga Chlorella vulgaris, reducing cellular aggregation and cell size reduction. Higher concentrations of HA are more effective in reducing the toxicity of PS-NH2. The formation of cellular aggregates under the influence of PS-NH2 is likely related to the electrostatic attraction between the positively charged surfaces of the particles and the negatively charged polysaccharide walls of C. vulgaris.

Summary: This study found that the levels of pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory cytokines and growth factors were higher in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) 12 months after stent implantation. However, the level of high-sensitive C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) decreased in these patients, suggesting that drug treatment may play a positive role in attenuating inflammation in CAD patients.

Cell cycle related long non-coding RNAs as the critical regulators of breast cancer progression and metastasis

Amir Sadra Zangouei, Malihe Zangoue, Negin Taghehchian, Alireza Zangooie, Hamid Reza Rahimi, Ehsan Saburi, Mahya Sadat Alavi, Meysam Moghbeli

Summary: Cell cycle plays a crucial role in tumor progression, and molecular pathways targeting cell cycle progression are of great interest in cancer research. Long non-coding RNAs (LncRNAs) have been identified as potential non-invasive markers for the early detection of breast cancer due to their stability in body fluids. In this review, we summarize the reported LncRNAs involved in cell cycle regulation in breast cancer, with a focus on their impact on the G1/S transition through the CCND1/CDK4-6 complex. This review provides insights into the potential of cell cycle-related LncRNAs as efficient markers for early breast cancer detection.
