An on-line method for detecting and locating a faulty node in the utility grid is proposed for smart grids. The method is based on injection of high frequency (A-Band) current signal into the grid that would impose voltages (less than 1V according to EN50065-1 standard) on the nodes to determine changes in the impedance characteristics. This detection is accomplished on-line without interrupting the power flow in the network. The developed algorithm has been implemented within an electrical power system model. This low voltage network model has been tested with different fault scenarios. The proposed procedure is able to detect the faulty nodes with high accuracy.

Lavanya Vadamodala, Shuvajit Das, Omer Gundogmus, Yilmaz Sozer, Anik Chowdhury, Abdul W. Bandarkar, Salman Harasis, Sifat M. Chowdhury, Ehsanul Haque, Tausif Husain, Fernando Venegas, David Colavincenzo, Jeffrey Geither

Summary: This study systematically compares three types of electric machines - axial flux machine, interior permanent magnet (IPM) machine, and switched reluctance machine - to find the most suitable candidate for driving engine accessories in a hybrid truck. A Pugh matrix is created to score each machine type based on various criteria, with the best performing machine type validated through a full-scale prototype and testing.

A Novel Differential Power Processing Architecture for a Partially Shaded PV String Using Distributed Control

Mohamed O. Badawy, Somanna Mallangada Bose, Yilmaz Sozer

Summary: This article proposes a differential power processing configuration for a series photovoltaic string that operates each PV element at its local maximum power point while processing only a small portion of its total generated power. By using this configuration, higher energy capture and increased conversion efficiency can be achieved, while overcoming the difficulties associated with unmatched MPPs. The authors designed and built a hardware prototype to validate the effectiveness of the proposed configuration.

DC-Link Current Ripple Reduction in Switched Reluctance Machine Drives

Md Ehsanul Haque, Anik Chowdhury, Sifat Morshed Chowdhury, Salman Harasis, Shuvajit Das, Yilmaz Sozer, Omer Gundogmus, Lavanya Vadamodala, Fernando Venegas, David Colavincenzo, Jeffrey Geither

Summary: This article analyzes the DC-link current ripple in switched reluctance machine (SRM) drive and proposes a control algorithm to reduce the ripple while maintaining machine performance. The proposed algorithm extracts ripple components from the DC-link current using a high-pass filter and ensures ripple energy circulation between phases, reducing the pulsating energy requirement from the DC supply. The DC-link ripple is suppressed at a wide speed range of operation to enable efficient and reliable drive operation without adding any external hardware system.

Experimental Verification of Acoustic Noise and Radial Force Sum Variation in Switched Reluctance Motor

Jihad Furqani, Candra Adi Wiguna, Akira Chiba, Omer Gundogmus, Yilmaz Sozer, Agus Purwadi

Summary: Acoustic noise reduction is a key focus in the development of switched reluctance motors (SRM), with the flattening of three-phase radial force sum being an effective method. Experimental verification has been done by optimizing current profiles. New current waveforms have been proposed to reduce acoustic noise in the 18/12 SRM without sacrificing efficiency, which is competitive with permanent magnet motors in hybrid electric vehicles in terms of power density, torque density, peak efficiency, and dimensions.
