The occurrence and distribution of 19 antibiotics including ten sulfonamides, four quinolones, three tetracyclines and two macrolides in water, sediment, and biota samples from the Liao River Basin, China were investigated in the present study. The samples were collected in May 2012, and laboratory analyses revealed that antibiotics were widely distributed in the Liao River Basin. Macrolides made up the majority of antibiotics in the water ranging from not detected (ND) to 3162.22 ng L-1, while tetracyclines and macrolides were the predominant antibiotics in the sediments, ranging from ND to 404.82 mu g kg(-1) (mean 32.11 mu g kg(-1) dw) and ND to 375.13 (mean 32.77 mu g kg(-1) dw), with detection frequencies of 37.3% and 38.1%, respectively. In biological samples, quinolones were the most frequently detected antibiotics (57.1-100%), with concentrations ranging from 286.6-1655.3 mu g kg(-1). The highest bioaccumulation factor (BAF) of 45407 L kg(-1) was found for enrofloxacin. The phase distribution calculation showed that tetracyclines were the most strongly adsorbed antibiotics in the sediment, with the highest pseudo-partitioning coefficient values, ranging from 1299 to 1499 L kg(-1). The geographical differences of antibiotic concentrations were largely due to anthropogenic activities and the sewage discharges from the local cities along the rivers.

Haijian Lu, Wenxiu Liu, Heng Zhang, Jiangtao Yang, Yang Liu, Miao Chen, Changsheng Guo, Xiaolei Sun, Jian Xu

Summary: This study investigated the per capita consumption and prevalence of psychoactive substances (PSs) in Qinghai Province, China using wastewater-based epidemiology. The results showed that methamphetamine was the most consumed drug in the region, with higher consumption in certain cities due to different patterns and economic levels. Methadone consumption was also high in one city, possibly related to methadone maintenance therapy sites. Ecological risk assessments indicated low risk from methadone to aquatic organisms. However, the long-term effects of PSs cannot be ignored.

Effect of thiamethoxam on the behavioral profile alteration and toxicity of adult zebrafish at environmentally relevant concentrations

Jiangtao Yang, Changsheng Guo, Ying Luo, Jingpu Fan, Weimin Wang, Xingxing Yin, Jian Xu

Summary: This study investigated the effect of the insecticide thiamethoxam (THM) on the behavior of adult zebrafish. The results showed that after exposure to different concentrations of THM, the locomotor activity, aggregation, and social activity of the fish were enhanced, but memory of the food zone was disrupted and abnormal swimming behavior was observed. THM exposure also caused pathological changes in the brain tissue, affected the concentrations of acetylcholinesterase and cortisol, and impacted the condition factor and organ coefficients of the zebrafish. This highlights the importance of behavioral studies in ecological risk assessment.

Degradation of sulpiride in water by the UV/chlorine process: kinetics, reaction mechanism, and transformation pathways

Heng Zhang, Miao Chen, Changsheng Guo, Jingpu Fan, Jian Xu

Summary: The UV/chlorine process is an advanced oxidation process that can produce reactive species for eliminating micropollutants in water. This study investigated the kinetics and reaction mechanism of sulpiride degradation by the UV/chlorine system, and evaluated the influencing factors. The results showed that SLP degradation followed a second-order kinetic model and the rate constant was in the range of 2.49-4.72 (mol L-1)(-1) min(-1). The combination of UV and chlorine was more efficient for SLP degradation compared to single UV photolysis or chlorine alone.

Occurrence, spatial distribution, and potential risks of organic micropollutants in urban surface waters from qinghai, northwest China

Jiangtao Yang, Ying Luo, Miao Chen, Haijian Lu, Heng Zhang, Yang Liu, Changsheng Guo, Jian Xu

Summary: This study investigated the residues, distribution, and risks of organic micropollutants (OMPs) in surface waters of major cities in Qinghai, China. The results showed that OPEs were the dominant composition, and diazinon and dursban posed moderate-high chronic ecological risk to aquatic organisms. Although the non-carcinogenic total hazard quotient of OMPs in surface water was low, the potential risks to children and infants should not be underestimated.

Metagenomic surveillance of antibiotic resistome in influent and effluent of wastewater treatment plants located on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau

Bin Shi, Renxin Zhao, Guijin Su, Bingyue Liu, Wenxiu Liu, Jian Xu, Qianqian Li, Jing Meng

Summary: This study investigated antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in influent and effluent of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) located on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau using metagenomic approaches. The results showed that the relative abundance and diversity of ARGs significantly decreased from influent to effluent across the WWTPs. Clinically relevant ARGs mainly conferring resistance to beta-lactams were detected in both influent and effluent. The study also revealed the mobility potential of different ARG types and identified the bacterial hosts of ARGs. The findings emphasize the importance of metagenomic surveillance and provide insights for risk assessment and control of antibiotic resistome in WWTPs located in vulnerable areas.

Behavioral Changes and Metabolic Responses of Adult Zebrafish (Danio Rerio) Exposed to Methamphetamine

Xingxing Yin, Yanghui Deng, Changsheng Guo, Chunguang Ding, Jian Xu, Fengchang Wu

Summary: The toxicological mechanisms of psychoactive substances in zebrafish at environmentally relevant concentrations were studied using untargeted metabolomics and behavioral characteristics. Even at sublethal concentrations, methamphetamine had adverse effects on aquatic organisms. This study analyzed the behavioral and metabolomic response of adult zebrafish exposed to methamphetamine at three concentrations compared to a control group. The results showed that metabolic effects and behavioral changes were observed even at low concentrations. Methamphetamine exposure in zebrafish could induce oxidative stress, energy metabolism disorders, and inflammation-associated diseases. The anxiety levels of exposed individuals were elevated, while their social interaction, learning, and memory were depressed. The modification of fish behavior could have further ecologically important effects.
