The bioavailability of nitric oxide (NO) represents a key marker in vascular health. A decrease in NO induces a pathological condition denominated endothelial dysfunction, syndrome observed in different pathologies, such as obesity, diabetes, kidney disease, cardiovascular disease, and preeclampsia (PE). PE is one of the major risks for maternal death and fetal loss. Recent studies suggest that the placenta of pregnant women with PE express high levels of lectin-like oxidized LDL receptor-1 (LOX-1), which induces endothelial dysfunction by increasing reactive oxygen species (ROS) and decreasing intracellular NO. Besides LOX-1 activation induces changes in migration and apoptosis of syncytiotrophoblast cells. However, the role of this receptor in placental tissue is still unknown. In this review we will describes the physiological roles of LOX-1 in normal placenta development and the potential involvement of this receptor in the pathophysiology of PE.

Javad Sharifi-Rad, Veronique Seidel, Michalak Izabela, Margalida Monserrat-Mequida, Antoni Sureda, Valeska Ormazabal, Felipe A. Zuniga, Shivaprasad Shetty Mangalpady, Raffaele Pezzani, Alibek Ydyrys, Gulmira Tussupbekova, Miquel Martorell, Daniela Calina, William C. Cho

Summary: Cancer is a leading cause of death worldwide, and its development is linked to oxidative stress. The transcription factor Nrf2 plays a vital role in protecting cells against oxidative stress in cancer growth, progression, and therapy resistance. Therefore, innovative inhibitors targeting Nrf2 are being investigated. This comprehensive review explores the potential of phenolic compounds, found in traditional plant-based remedies, as effective anticancer agents by inhibiting Nrf2. The clinical applications of naturally-occurring bioactive compounds as Nrf2 inhibitors, specifically polyphenols, are also discussed.

Self-Assembled CNF/rGO/Tannin Composite: Study of the Physicochemical and Wound Healing Properties

Katherina Fernandez, Aylen Llanquileo, Monserrat Bustos, Valentina Aedo, Isleidy Ruiz, Sebastian Carrasco, Mauricio Tapia, Miguel Pereira, Manuel F. Melendrez, Claudio Aguayo, Leonard I. Atanase

Summary: A conductive composite material for wound dressing was developed using graphene oxide (GO), nanocellulose (CNF), and tannins (TA) reduced with polydopamine (PDA). The composite material was characterized using SEM, FTIR, XRD, XPS, and TGA, and its conductivity, mechanical properties, cytotoxicity, and in vitro wound healing were evaluated. Successful physical interaction between CNF, TA, and GO was achieved. Increasing CNF amount improved the strength, cytotoxicity, and wound healing performance, while reducing thermal properties, surface charge, and conductivity. Slight reduction in cell viability and migration was observed with TA incorporation, possibly due to dosage and chemical composition. However, the in vitro results demonstrated the potential of these composite materials for wound healing.

Marlin Solorzano, Gislaine Granfeldt, Natalia Ulloa, Guillermo Molina-Recio, Rafael Molina-Luque, Claudio Aguayo, Fanny Petermann-Rocha, Miquel Martorell

Summary: The criteria for diagnosing metabolic syndrome in pediatric population vary, leading to inconsistent prevalence rates. This study aimed to establish diagnostic models using non-invasive (anthropometric) and invasive (serum biomarkers) variables for early detection of metabolic syndrome in Chilean children. The results showed that lipid biomarkers (HDL-c and TG) and their ratio (TG/HDL-c) had higher diagnostic capacity, followed by body mass index (BMI) and waist-to-height ratio (WHtR). Detecting metabolic syndrome was possible through both invasive and non-invasive methods in overweight and obese children.

Katherine Oporto, Claudia Radojkovic, Edwin A. Mellisho, Felipe Zuniga, Valeska Ormazabal, Enrique Guzman-Gutierrez, Estefania Nova-Lamperti, Lleretny Rodriguez-Alvarez, Mario Aranda, Carlos Escudero, Claudio Aguayo

Summary: Endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) are stem cells derived from bone marrow that migrate to damaged tissues for repair and regeneration. This study investigated the effects of adenosine receptor (AR) activation on the release of small extracellular vesicles (sEVs) from early EPCs (eEPCs). The results showed that AR activation increased the release of sEVs from eEPCs and these sEVs promoted angiogenesis in recipient endothelial cells. This study provides the first evidence that adenosine enhances the release of sEVs from eEPCs, which have pro-angiogenic effects on recipient endothelial cells.

Best Practice Guide for Cryoballoon Ablation in Atrial Fibrillation: The Compilation Experience of More than 1000 Procedures

Dimitrios Tsiachris, Christos-Konstantinos Antoniou, Ioannis Doundoulakis, Panagiota Manolakou, Demetrios Sougiannis, Athanasios Kordalis, Konstantinos A. Gatzoulis, Gian-Battista Chierchia, Carlo de Asmundis, Christodoulos Stefanadis, Konstantinos Tsioufis

Summary: Nowadays, cryoballoon (CB) has become an established alternative to radio frequency (RF) ablation for pulmonary vein isolation (PVI), with the ability to isolate PVs in a single application. In a study on over 1000 consecutive patients, our center optimized the CB PVI procedure. It is expected that future guidelines will recommend CB as the first-line PVI for patients with paroxysmal AF and a class I indication. In a long-term follow-up of the EARLY-AF trial, CB showed a lower incidence of persistent atrial fibrillation compared to anti-arrhythmic drugs.
