Calprotectin (CP) is a calcium- and zinc-binding protein of the S100 family expressed mainly by neutrophils with important extracellular activity. The aim of the current review is to summarize the latest findings concerning the role of CP in a diverse range of inflammatory and noninflammatory conditions among children. Increasing evidence suggests the implication of CP in the diagnosis, followup, assessment of relapses, and response to treatment in pediatric pathological conditions, such as inflammatory bowel disease, necrotizing enterocolitis, celiac disease, intestinal cystic fibrosis, acute appendicitis, juvenile idiopathic arthritis, Kawasaki disease, polymyositis-dermatomyositis, glomerulonephritis, IgA nephropathy, malaria, HIV infection, hyperzincemia and hypercalprotectinemia, and cancer. Further studies are required to provide insights into the actual role of CP in these pathological processes in pediatrics.

Comparison between bovine carotid artery graft and polytetrafluoroethylene graft for haemodialysis vascular access: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Ioannis D. Kostakis, Ioannis Loukopoulos

Summary: A systematic review comparing bovine carotid artery grafts with polytetrafluoroethylene grafts for haemodialysis vascular access found that both types of grafts have similar short-term and long-term outcomes. However, bovine carotid artery grafts may have an advantage in terms of lower graft infection rates and fewer interventions needed per patient-year.

Kostakis, Evangelia D. Chrysina, Dimitra Hadjipavlou-Litina, Demeter Tzeli, Andreas G. Tzakos, Thomas Mavromoustakos

Summary: The study indicates that aspartame could potentially inhibit LOX-1 and block its biological response, serving as a novel starting point for drug design against LOX enzyme. Various in silico and experimental studies were conducted to evaluate the potency of natural and artificial sweeteners in inhibiting the lipoxygenase enzyme, providing insight into their potential therapeutic applications.

Social and economic determinants of materials recycling and circularity in Europe: an empirical investigation

Ioannis Kostakis, Konstantinos P. Tsagarakis

Summary: The empirical study explores the impact of socioeconomic characteristics on the circular economy, revealing positive effects from factors such as economic wealth, fertility rate, environmental taxes, and R&D expenditures on materials recycling and circularity rates in the EU. Urbanization also has a positive but nonlinear effect on recycling and circularity rates. These findings can be valuable for policymakers and managers looking to implement policies to increase recycling and circularity in the EU and beyond.

Residential demand for electricity: empirical evidence from Greece using pseudo-panels

Ioannis Kostakis, Sarantis Lolos

Summary: This study examines the behaviour of residential electricity demand in Greece from 2009 to 2018, finding that demand is price and income inelastic and that household size and education level are important determinants. As electricity use increases, demand becomes less responsive to income and more responsive to prices.

The role of entrepreneurship, innovation and socioeconomic development on circularity rate: Empirical evidence from selected European countries

Ioannis Kostakis, Konstantinos P. Tsagarakis

Summary: This study analyzes the relationship between entrepreneurship, innovation, socio-economic development, and circularity progress in the European Union countries. The empirical findings suggest that entrepreneurship, innovation, and socio-economic development significantly affect the circularity rate, while polluting entrepreneurship has a negative association with circularity. Research and development and economic growth also have positive impacts on circularity, and the human development index is important in the circularity process.

Policies for supporting the regional circular economy and sustainability

Josep-Maria Arauzo-Carod, Ioannis Kostakis, Konstantinos P. Tsagarakis

Summary: Circular Economy and Sustainability are important challenges for policymakers, producers, and consumers. Circular Economy processes can minimize waste generation and have the potential to combat the negative effects of climate change. Public policies supporting the Circular Economy should be designed at the lowest levels of public administrations, providing opportunities for regional governments to implement and monitor these policies. This special issue provides a rich body of work for further research on the nexus between Circularity and Sustainability.

3,6-Dihydro-5H-pyrazolo [4′,3′:5,6]pyrano[3,4-b] indol-5-one

Amalia D. Kalampaliki, Sofia Kanellopoulou, Ioannis K. Kostakis

Summary: Pyrano [3,4-b]indol-1(9H)-ones and indolo [2,3-c]coumarins are important classes of heterocyclic compounds with versatile biological activities. Here, we describe a straightforward and scalable synthesis method, and the compound is fully characterized by means of H-1 and C-13 NMR spectra.

Summary: Xanthenes and benzothiazoles are important heterocyclic compounds with versatile biological activities. This study presents a straightforward and scalable synthesis of a thiazole-fused xanthone compound. The thiazole ring was synthesized using Appel's salt in a six-step approach, and the product was fully characterized using 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy.

Next-generation sequencing reveals altered gene expression and enriched pathways in triple-negative breast cancer cells treated with oleuropein and oleocanthal

Paraskevi Karousi, Christos K. Kontos, Panagiota Papakotsi, Ioannis K. Kostakis, Alexios-Leandros Skaltsounis, Andreas Scorilas

Summary: This study found that oleuropein and oleocanthal can inhibit the proliferation of triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) cells and significantly alter the expression profile of TNBC cells. These compounds may have therapeutic benefits for TNBC through their effects on multiple pathways associated with TNBC.

Synthesis and Biological Evaluation of Resveratrol Methoxy Derivatives

Elizabeth Fragopoulou, Katerina Gkotsi, Filio Petsini, Katerina Gioti, Amalia D. D. Kalampaliki, George Lambrinidis, Ioannis K. K. Kostakis, Roxane Tenta

Summary: Resveratrol is a natural compound with various health benefits, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-platelet properties. However, its low bioavailability limits its effectiveness. This study synthesized methoxy derivatives of resveratrol and evaluated their effects on platelet function. Some derivatives showed superior anti-platelet activity compared to the original compound, indicating their potential as anti-platelet agents.
