Summary: This study assessed the ability of the SWAT model to test the effectiveness of three vegetative filter strip scenarios in minimizing nutrient loads downstream. The implementation of these filter strips could have a positive impact on nutrient flows in the Taabo river basin, with scenario 2 being the most suitable for the agro-climatic conditions.

Summary: This study introduces an improved HRU definition method that minimizes the loss of watershed biophysical information without significantly increasing the number of HRUs or lowering user-defined thresholds. The new HRU model better represents land use and soil distribution characteristics and improves the simulation of hydrological and water quality variables compared to the default SWAT model.

Summary: Vegetative filter strips (VFS) are effective management practices for protecting surface waters from excess nutrient inputs. However, there is a lag in translating scientific knowledge to policy and implementation. This study highlights the need for a holistic approach to VFS design, considering various factors such as soil volume, temporal effects, geospatial context, and bio-geochemical processes. It also emphasizes the importance of addressing emerging challenges and integrating their implications into VFS research, monitoring, policy, and implementation.

Summary: The study found that watershed partition has a significant impact on channel sediment deposition, with an increase in sub-watersheds reducing spatial variations in channel sediment. Changes in channel sediment routing are primarily due to the sensitivity of channel dimensions in the model to watershed partition, altering the hydraulic radius until a partition threshold is reached.

Summary: Streamflow is a key variable in the hydrological cycle. This study investigates the impact of different spatial and temporal resolutions of remotely sensed soil moisture products on streamflow simulation and forecasting using the Ensemble Kalman Filter (EnKF) technique. The results show that the high-spatial resolution of downscaled SMAP 1 km is more beneficial for improving the accuracy of streamflow simulation, especially in small catchments.

Summary: This study assessed the effectiveness of sustainable agricultural practices in reducing sediments and nutrients export in a Portuguese river basin highly affected by agricultural pollution. The results showed that implementing fertilizer incorporation, conservation tillage, and filter strips simultaneously can achieve the highest average reduction of sediments, phosphorus, and nitrate export (25%).

Summary: Sediment carried off-site by runoff poses a significant water quality threat. Vegetative filter strips (VFS) are a low-cost management practice that can mitigate runoff impact on surface water quality. This study aimed to systematically investigate the effectiveness of short and sparse VFS on steep slopes (>15%), and found that it can significantly reduce runoff and sediment in high-sloped conditions like a roadway construction site.

Summary: Vegetation dynamics play a crucial role in the terrestrial water cycle, but their effects on hydrological models of irrigated watersheds have been rarely studied. In this study, a combinatorial approach using Sentinel-2 data was proposed and applied to an irrigated watershed in Iran. The results showed that the approach improved the predictive accuracy of the model and had a significant influence on the estimation of irrigation volume and timing.

Summary: The article presents the predicted changes in soil water content in the Bystra river catchment under different scenarios of climate change and adaptation practices. The results show that the adaptation practices have limited effects on increasing soil water content, but can reduce sediment yield, total runoff, and actual evapotranspiration. Among the considered adaptation scenarios, the no-till practice has the highest impact on water balance at the catchment scale.

Summary: This paper introduces the application of multivariate data assimilation (DA) to the SWAT model (DA-SWAT) and discusses the limitations of existing integrated approaches. A new approach is proposed that allows the perfect integration of SWAT with any desired DA algorithm. The results show that multivariate assimilation improves the accuracy of SCF (Streamflow) estimation and mitigates the equifinality problem.

Summary: This study evaluated the efficiency of grass barriers as a mitigation measure of diffuse pollution in Northeast China. Results showed that the alfalfa barrier had high runoff and sediment reduction efficiencies during the maize growing season, and could remove more than 50% of nutrient loads.

Summary: This study used the SWAT-Salt model to explore the effects of region-wide implementation of subsurface tile drainage on salinity transport and export from an irrigated semi-arid watershed. The model can simulate salinity transport in tile drained watersheds and evaluate the impact of salinity management practices at various spatial and temporal scales.

Summary: A novel quasi-reflectionless bandpass filter using a double-sided parallel-strip line and symmetric absorptive bandstop filters is proposed. Detailed analysis shows that high characteristic impedance is required to enhance selectivity, which can be achieved by offsetting the double-sided parallel-strip line. Furthermore, the T-shaped structure of the filter generates two transmission zeros for better out-of-band suppression.

Summary: This study compared the effectiveness of different vegetation setting modes in controlling soil erosion on eroded gullies and slopes through simulated rainfall experiments. The results showed that vegetation filter strips can effectively reduce runoff and sediment yield. The impacts of rainfall intensity and slope gradient on nutrient loss were found to be different, while the impacts of vegetation setting modes on soil and water loss can be equal or offset.
