Summary: Pyoderma gangrenosum is a rare neutrophilic dermatosis characterized by painful skin ulcers. The exact cause is not fully understood, but auto-inflammatory processes involving increased activity of neutrophils have been observed. Diagnosing the condition is no longer based on exclusion, but can be done using scoring systems. A multidisciplinary approach is required for treatment, including immunosuppressive therapies and topical pharmacologic therapy, wound management, and pain control. Biologic therapies such as tumor necrosis factor-a inhibitors have shown promise in recent studies.

Summary: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is characterized by inflammation outbreak and joint destruction. Neutrophils play a crucial role in RA by releasing excess neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs), but preventing NETs formation is still challenging. In this study, a method using sivelestat-conjugated bovine serum albumin nanoparticles (BTST NPs) was established to selectively inhibit neutrophil elastase (NE) and prevent NETs production. Additionally, the BTST NPs were loaded with dexamethasone palmitate (DP) for synergistic treatment of RA. The results showed that DP/BTST NPs could effectively target inflamed neutrophils, hinder NETs generation, and improve RA symptoms.

Summary: A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted to determine muscle strength, muscle mass, and physical function in patients with SLE compared to healthy individuals and patients with RA. The review included 19 studies and the meta-analysis included 11 studies. SLE patients had lower muscle strength than healthy controls and similar muscle mass compared to RA patients and healthy controls. SLE patients with deforming arthropathy had lower muscle strength compared to those without deforming arthropathies.
