Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic had differential impacts on suicide rates within the 32 states of Mexico. The overall suicide rate remained relatively stable during the pandemic, but there were variations between different states. Higher population density and higher suicide rates in 2019 were associated with increased suicide during the pandemic.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the prevalence of dental trauma in Mexican schoolchildren aged 6 to 12, and its association with clinical, sociodemographic, and socioeconomic variables. The study found that age, gender, decreased overjet, father's age and education level, and the presence of health insurance were associated with dental trauma.

Summary: This study analyzed wastewater samples from 50 cities in the United States and Mexico from July to October 2020 to estimate drug use rates during the COVID-19 pandemic. The results showed high detection frequencies of psychotropic drugs, including ketamine, lorazepam, clonazepam, and temazepam. The study also detected zaleplon and zolpidem in wastewater for the first time in North America.

Summary: This study aimed to estimate the cumulative incidence and the progression of erosive tooth wear (ETW) according to tooth type over a follow-up period of 18 months in adolescents living in Mexico City. The overall cumulative incidence rate of ETW was 5.9%, and the progression of ETW was 10%. The cumulative incidence of initial texture loss (BEWE = 1) was 29.1% for maxillary central incisors, and 30.4% of mandibular first molars progressed to loss of hard tissues (BEWE & GE;2).

Summary: Based on ethnographic information collected in two municipalities in the state of Puebla, Mexico, this paper analyzes the fragmented transitions from school to work of young people in Mexico. The precarious conditions of production and social reproduction, especially among women and populations of rural and indigenous origin, contribute to the unstable transitions and precarious job placements. Single women in Tehuacan end up permanently working in the clothing maquiladora instead of resuming their interrupted school trajectories, while young men and women in Pahuatlan rely on work in the United States for economic stability.

Summary: The study evaluates the impact of the food service component on the nutritional status of schoolchildren in a full-time school program. The findings show that the intake of energy and macronutrients exceeds the recommended intake in all schoolchildren, with males being the most affected by excess body weight, elevated body fat, and cardiovascular risk. However, schoolchildren who benefited from the food service component displayed improved nutritional status compared to those who did not.

Summary: The study focused on Aedes albopictus from southwestern Europe and Brazil, revealing significant genetic and phenotypic diversity at a global level. Different genetic and morphometric markers were used to show variations between populations in terms of evolutionary exchanges and distinctive characteristics. The findings emphasize the importance of regular surveillance to prevent the introduction of highly virus-transmitting Aedes albopictus into Europe.

Summary: Although South American camelids serve as definitive hosts for Fasciola hepatica, their role in transmission and epidemiology of the disease has not been thoroughly studied. Experimental investigations suggest that the contribution of llamas to fascioliasis transmission is negligible, and therefore, they do not need to receive priority in control measures in endemic areas.

Summary: The Etruscan shrew, the smallest living mammal on Earth, has been studied for the first time to determine its helminth parasite community. Results showed that approximately 50% of the individuals harbored tapeworms with a two-host life cycle using arthropods as intermediate hosts, reflecting its insectivorous diet. Physiological adaptations due to its small size likely influenced its helminth spectrum and specificity.

Summary: Fasciolid flukes obtained from sheep and cattle in Ecuador displayed high genetic diversity with DNA sequences suggesting introductions from various countries. Abnormally large liver flukes were found in Ecuador, indicating possible past hybridization events. The presence of these features in Ecuadorian fasciolids may be linked to livestock import activities in the region.

Summary: The study conducted quantitative coprological analyses of children in Alexandria and Behera governorates, Egypt, revealing the highest intensities recorded in Egypt and the Old World. Intensities varied by gender and age group, with peak burdens found in 7-10 year-old children. Results highlighted the need for appropriate assessment of heavily infected children to prevent post-treatment complications.

Summary: This study aims to examine the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on schistosomiasis research, identify the most productive countries and journals, and analyze the association between total publications and socio-economic and demographic factors. The findings suggest that while there was no direct impact on schistosomiasis research, resources have been redirected to COVID-19 research, affecting the activities for the eradication of schistosomiasis.

Summary: Through ecological niche modeling (ENM), we can assess the geographical risk of transmission of vector-borne diseases (VBDs). This overview summarizes fundamental concepts and common approaches in ENM, focusing on crucial issues often overlooked in modeling VBD niches. It also briefly presents the most relevant uses of ENM in dealing with VBDs. This overview serves as a valuable benchmark for future research on niche modeling of VBDs.

Summary: Fasciola hepatica and F. gigantica are liver flukes that cause fascioliasis, a complex zoonotic disease that occurs worldwide. In endemic areas, where preventive chemotherapy is used, human infection/reinfection is prevalent due to transmission by livestock and lymnaeid snail vectors. A One Health approach is necessary to reduce infection risk, focusing on freshwater transmission sources, lymnaeids, mammal reservoirs, and human factors such as ethnography and housing. Previous research provides important knowledge for control strategies, and a tailored One Health intervention is needed for each endemic area, prioritizing measures based on available funds to ensure long-term sustainability.
