Mixed-charge pseudo-zwitterionic copolymer brush as broad spectrum antibiofilm coating

Summary: This study demonstrates the effectiveness of a novel mixed-charge copolymer brush coating in combating biofilm formation, outperforming traditional zwitterionic polymers. By utilizing oppositely charged monomers, a greater than 99% reduction in biofilm formation was achieved against various bacteria in vitro, with excellent long-term efficacy in murine infection models. These findings suggest the potential of combining readily available singly charged monomers for potent antibiofilm applications.

A global overview of biodiversity offsetting governance

Summary: Using a research-weaving approach, we analyze the development of biodiversity offsetting governance through a combination of literature review and qualitative analysis of institutional developments. Our findings indicate a global mainstreaming of core principles, such as avoidance, no-net-loss, and a mitigation hierarchy, as well as the pooling and trading of offsets. We also observe a diversification of institutional designs and actors involved, leading to a complex regime of biodiversity offsetting governance. While this suggests institutional innovation and policy experimentation, questions arise regarding the effectiveness of offsetting practices.

Bacterial biofilm inhibitors: An overview

A Broad Overview of Signaling in Ph-Negative Classic Myeloproliferative Neoplasms

Summary: There is growing evidence that Ph-negative myeloproliferative neoplasms are disorders in which multiple signaling pathways are significantly disturbed. The discovery of somatic mutations in JAK2, MPL, and CALR has shed light on the aberrant functions of their mutant products, while additional somatic mutations in other genes have added complexity to the molecular pathogenesis of MPNs. This review highlights the involvement of a wide variety of cellular processes and pathways in the pathogenesis of MPNs, explaining their phenotypic heterogeneity.

Summary: A compound called COE2-2hexyl has been identified as a synthetic antimicrobial with broad-spectrum antibacterial activity. It effectively cured mice infected with multi-drug resistant bacteria and did not induce bacterial resistance. The ease of molecular design, synthesis, and modular nature of COEs offer advantages over conventional antimicrobials, and these features enable the construction of a range of compounds with the potential to address a global health crisis.

A Broad Light-Harvesting Conjugated Oligoelectrolyte Enables Photocatalytic Nitrogen Fixation in a Bacterial Biohybrid

Summary: We report a membrane-intercalating conjugated oligoelectrolyte (COE) called COE-IC, designed to enable the aerobic N-2-fixing bacteria Azotobacter vinelandii to perform photosynthetic ammonia production through light-harvesting ability. COE-IC has a conjugated core that promotes visible light absorption, and can spontaneously associate with A. vinelandii to form a biohybrid where COE is intercalated within the lipid bilayer membrane. The resulting COE-IC/A. vinelandii biohybrid showed a 2.4-fold increase in light-driven ammonia production compared to the control, along with enhanced bacterial biomass and production of L-amino acids. Introduction of isotopically enriched N-15(2) atmosphere confirmed the generation of products from atmospheric N-2.

Summary: Zoonotic scabies, also known as pseudoscabies, is a self-limiting disease. Although it is commonly believed that scabies mites from animals cannot reproduce and persist on human skin, several case reports have mentioned the persistence of symptoms and occasionally mites. This review aims to collect and organize literature on zoonotic transmission of Sarcoptes scabiei, focusing on the source of outbreak, transmission circumstances, diagnosis, and treatment.

Sodium dehydroacetate confers broad antibiotic tolerance by remodeling bacterial metabolism

Summary: Antibiotic tolerance poses a serious threat to global public health and the exogenous factors triggering its development are not well understood. This study reveals that a food additive called sodium dehydroacetate (DHA-S) impairs the activity of bactericidal antibiotics by inhibiting bacterial cellular respiration and enhancing multidrug efflux pumps. The addition of specific amino acids can reverse antibiotic tolerance elicited by DHA-S. These findings enhance our understanding of the potential risks of using DHA-S in bacterial infection treatment and provide insights into the relationship between antibiotic tolerance and bacterial metabolism.

HierCC: a multi-level clustering scheme for population assignments based on core genome MLST

Summary: pHierCC is a scalable clustering scheme based on core genome multi-locus typing, allowing incremental, static, and multi-level cluster assignments of genomes. HCCeval is used to identify optimal thresholds for assigning genomes to cohesive HierCC clusters. HierCC has genotyped over 530,000 genomes from various bacteria species since its implementation in 2018.

Genomic population structure associated with repeated escape of Salmonella enterica ATCC14028s from the laboratory into nature

Summary: ATCC14028s, a strain of Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium, has been widely used since 1960 for quality control and laboratory experiments. However, it has been involved in multiple cross-contaminations, laboratory infections, and even a known bioterrorism attempt. Natural Typhimurium isolates share almost identical core genomes with laboratory strains and have been infecting humans and animals for decades.
