Summary: Telomeres and subtelomeres play an important role in maintaining genome stability in eukaryotes. In telomerase-mutant strains of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, short telomere sequences from other loci or repeated subtelomeric sequences are found at most chromosome extremities. The subtelomeric sequences, including rDNA, undergo extensive rearrangements and contribute to chromosome instability. New telomere-capped extremities composed of sequences from internal genomic regions are associated with high DNA methylation, suggesting the formation of heterochromatin to restore chromosome end stability in C. reinhardtii.

Summary: Cytokinesis is the final stage of the cell division cycle, where cellular components are separated to produce two daughter cells. This process is controlled by conserved mechanisms and proteins in eukaryotes. The fission yeast Schizosaccharomyces pombe is an established model organism for studying cell cycle regulation. In this article, we review the assembly and regulation of the actin-myosin contractile ring during cytokinesis in both fission yeast and mammalian cells. We also discuss the potential role of anillin in human tumorigenesis and its implications for cancer treatment. Overall, this article provides an overview of current understanding of cytokinesis in S. pombe and its relevance to other eukaryotic organisms, including humans.
