Objective. To evaluate ultrasound transmission velocity (UTV) for assessment of mechanical bone quality, an ex vivo comparison of different bone types measured with UTV, 2-dimensional (2D) histomorphometry and with 3-dimensional (3D) radiology (cone-beam computerized tomography [CBCT], computerized microtomography [mu CT]) was conducted. Study Design. Clinical cortical, cancellous, and mixed bone (each n = 6) was measured via UTV (m/s), CBCT (white pixel/black pixel ratio [WP/BP]), mu CT (bone volume/total volume [mu BV/TV]), and histomorphometry (bone volume/total volume [hBV/TV]). UTV values were correlated with 2D-histomorphometry and 3D-radiologic results. Results. For the cortical, cancellous, and mixed bone samples, respectively, UTV values were 1,945.17, 1,266.9, and 1472.2 m/s, WP/BP quotients were 0.96, 0.15, and 0.33, mu BV/TV quotients were 0.94, 0.2, and 0.47, and hBV/TV quotients were 0.96, 0.24 and 0.39. Significant correlations between UTV and the other methods were seen (P < .0001). Conclusions. Similar to the other methods, UTV is able to discriminate between different bone types ex vivo.

Risk Factors for Complications Following Staged Alveolar Ridge Augmentation and Dental Implantation: A Retrospective Evaluation of 151 Cases with Allogeneic and 70 Cases with Autogenous Bone Blocks

Frank R. Kloss, Peer W. Kaemmerer, Anita Kloss-Brandstaetter

Summary: This study aimed to identify potential risk factors for complications related to alveolar ridge augmentation using bone blocks. The study found that complications were more frequent with autogenous bone blocks compared to allogeneic bone blocks, but these complications were minor and did not affect the success of dental rehabilitation.

Summary: Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease that leads to tooth loss and significantly impacts global health. A hyaluronic acid-based dispersion with controlled oxygen delivery shows potential as a treatment for periodontitis. In vitro and in vivo studies demonstrate the biocompatibility, antimicrobial activity against Porphyromonas gingivalis, and angiogenesis enhancement of the developed oxygen-releasing dispersion. This suggests the potential of oxygen-releasing biomaterials for periodontal tissue regeneration.

Summary: Bone fracture healing is a complex process involving early immune reactions, bone formation, and angiogenesis. This study focuses on the effects of bone sialoprotein (BSP) immobilized in a collagen type I gel on angiogenesis. In vitro analyses and a yolk sac membrane assay demonstrate that BSP induces angiogenesis and that collagen type I is the optimal carrier for BSP. This suggests that BSP could be a promising molecule for bone tissue regeneration.

Summary: This is the first prospective study using a multicentric approach to investigate the effectiveness of adjuvant radiotherapy in patients with early squamous cell carcinoma of the oral cavity and oropharynx. The study found that adjuvant radiotherapy does not seem to influence overall survival, but it positively affects time to progression. However, irradiated patients report a significantly decreased quality of life up to three years after therapy.

Summary: Oral cancer is a life-threatening disease and specific protein biomarkers in the blood can help with early tumor detection and individualized therapy. This exploratory study used advanced technology to analyze serum proteome and identified novel biomarkers for oral cancer. The study showed significant differences in serum protein levels between oral cancer patients and controls, as well as before and after curative surgery.

Evaluation of surgical techniques in survival rate and complications of zygomatic implants for the rehabilitation of the atrophic edentulous maxilla: a systematic review

Peer W. Kaemmerer, Shengchi Fan, Carlos Aparicio, Edmond Bedrossian, Ruben Davo, Dean Morton, Gerry M. M. Raghoebar, Sepehr Zarrine, Bilal Al-Nawas

Summary: This study assessed the outcome and complications of zygomatic implant placement using the original surgical technique (OST) and an Anatomy-Guided approach (AGA) in patients with severely atrophic maxillae. Based on the systematic review, placing ZI with OST and AGA is associated with a high implant survival rate and a higher risk of surgical complications, including sinusitis and soft tissue infection around the implant, during a minimum of 6 months follow-up.

Rehabilitation of Reconstructed Maxilla Using Denture-Guided Epithelial Regeneration in DCIA Flap: 10-Year Follow-Up

Vinay V. Kumar, Sainath Venkat, P. C. Jacob, Gaurav Khemeria

Summary: This 10-year follow-up report discusses the interdisciplinary comprehensive management of an aneurysmal bone cyst in the maxilla of a 24-year-old patient. The treatment involved resection and reconstruction using a vascularized deep circumflex iliac artery-based composite free flap, implant placement, and soft tissue management using denture-guided epithelial regeneration. The patient was followed up for 10 years, with definitive management achieved through implant-supported cast partial dentures.

Bisphosphonate-treatment of secondary chronic osteomyelitis of the jaw - a case report

Diana Heimes, Peer W. Kaemmerer

Summary: Secondary chronic osteomyelitis (SCO) is a progressive jawbone destruction caused by bacterial infection. Antibiotics are the first-line treatment, but surgery may not provide a cure. Bisphosphonates have shown promising results in SCO patients, similar to their success in primary nonbacterial osteomyelitis.

Summary: This study analyzed and compared morbidity-related parameters after alveolar ridge augmentation using autogenous and allogeneic bone blocks from patients' perspective. The results showed that the rate of nerve irritations was twice as high in the autologous group, and swelling was significantly higher in patients with autologous bone blocks. However, the overall satisfaction of patients in both groups was very high, with over 8/10 points.

The Accuracy of Zygomatic Implant Placement Assisted by Dynamic Computer-Aided Surgery: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Shengchi Fan, Gustavo Saenz-Ravello, Leonardo Diaz, Yiqun Wu, Ruben Davo, Feng Wang, Marko Magic, Bilal Al-Nawas, Peer W. Kaemmerer

Summary: The study aimed to evaluate the accuracy of different approaches for zygomatic implant (ZI) placement in patients with severe maxillary problems. The results showed that dynamic computer-aided surgery (d-CAIS) and modified static computer-aided surgery (s-CAIS) had clinically acceptable outcomes, while the conventional s-CAIS had the highest deviation values. Surgeons should be aware of potential deviations and complications regardless of the selected approach.

Summary: The study aimed to evaluate the skills of dental students in choosing the correct stage, diagnostics, and treatment option for MRONJ based on clinical and radiographic imaging. The results showed a lack of knowledge among students in staging, diagnostics, and treatment of MRONJ, although CBCT imaging positively affected decision-making. Further teaching in this disease's context and X-ray diagnostics is needed.

Allogeneic versus autogenous shell technique augmentation procedures: a prospective-observational clinical trial comparing surgical time and complication rates

Jochen Tunkel, Frederik Hoffmann, Yannik Schmelcher, Anita Kloss-Brandstaetter, Peer W. Kaemmerer

Summary: Compared to the autogenous technique, allogeneic shell augmentation has a shorter surgical time and a similar rate of intra- and postoperative complications as autogenous bone. Together with its promising clinical results, this technique can be recommended.
