Summary: The study aimed to estimate the burden of protein-energy malnutrition worldwide from 1990 to 2019. The results showed that protein-energy malnutrition still poses a significant disease burden globally, especially among children and the elderly. Additionally, there was a decrease in the prevalence, mortality, and disability-adjusted life years of protein-energy malnutrition with an increase in sociodemographic index.

Summary: This study analyzed the global burden of esophageal cancer attributable to smoking and found that despite a decrease in mortality rates from 1990 to 2019, the burden of esophageal cancer remains heavy, especially in regions with a middle socio-demographic index. The results suggest that active tobacco control measures can reduce the burden of esophageal cancer.

Summary: This study evaluated the global burden of cataracts using disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) and prevalence from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study 2019. The results showed that the global burden of cataracts increased from 1990 to 2019, but the age-standardized rates decreased. Southeast Asia had the highest rates of blindness caused by cataracts, and women were more heavily impacted. Older age, female gender, and lower socioeconomic status were associated with higher cataract burden globally.

Summary: This study found that neck pain prevalence in Brazil, Mexico, and globally remained stable, while rates in the USA and England were significantly higher. Different Brazilian states showed similar prevalence levels, with Sao Paulo having the highest rate. There was no significant difference by gender, but prevalence of neck pain tended to increase with age.

Summary: The study described the characteristics of prevalence, death, and DALYs of GBDs from 1990 to 2019. Over the 30 years, there was an increase in the prevalence, death, and DALYs of GBDs; globally, there were improvements in overall health with regard to GBDs, but specific measures should be taken in different SDI regions.

Summary: The study revealed slight increases in age-standardized incidence of PCOS and associated disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) among women of reproductive age globally from 2007 to 2017, especially in middle-SDI and high-middle SDI regions. The highest increases in both the age-standardized incidence rates and DALYs rates were observed in Ethiopia, Brazil, and China. Understanding the differences in the burden of PCOS across various locations could be valuable for resource allocation and formulation of effective preventive strategies.

Summary: Our study is the first to reveal the age and geographic distribution differences in prostate cancer epidemiology in China from 1990 to 2019. The study emphasizes the increasing burden of prostate cancer in China and highlights the need for targeted strategies. The findings also indicate regional differences in the epidemiology and disease burden of prostate cancer in China, with certain provinces requiring greater attention.

Summary: Despite the decline in smoking prevalence due to smoke-free policies, the number of non-smokers exposed to second-hand smoke hazards continues to increase globally. A systematic analysis of the disease burden caused by second-hand smoke is necessary to reduce harm. The study found that deaths and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) caused by second-hand smoke have been increasing, highlighting the need for stronger prevention measures.
