Background and Purpose: We performed a retrospective chart review to determine the responsiveness and minimal detectable change (MDC95) in persons with balance and vestibular disorders with the dynamic gait index (DGI) and the functional gait assessment (FGA). Methods: The study cohort consisted of 326 patients with a mean age of 60 +/- 18.3 years (range, 18-95 years; 69% female). The DGI, FGA, Activities-Specific Balance Confidence (ABC) scale, and the dizziness handicap inventory (DHI) were collected at intake and discharge. Results: The standardized response mean as an index of responsiveness was greater for the FGA (1.25) than for the DGI (0.72). Both measures demonstrated good internal consistency with baseline measures. The amount of pre- to posttreatment change that exceeds chance variation was estimated at 4 points for the DGI and 6 points for the FGA. In both the DGI and the FGA, a magnitude of change equivalent to the respective MDC95 was significantly associated with improvements in self-reported disability as measured by the ABC and DHI. Discussion and Conclusions: The DGI and the FGA are responsive to change over time in persons with balance and vestibular disorders. More complex gait measures need to be developed, as close to 50% of the subjects received optimal scores at discharge from a physical therapy exercise program, indicating that these measures have a ceiling effect. Effects of customized vestibular rehabilitation plus canalith repositioning maneuver on gait and balance in adults with Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo: A Randomized Controlled Trial

Phui Lin Se To, Devinder Kaur Ajit Singh, Susan L. Whitney

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of customized vestibular rehabilitation (VR) in addition to the standard canalith repositioning maneuver (CRM) on dynamic gait measures in adults with unilateral posterior canal BPPV. The results showed that customized VR plus standard CRM was more effective than standard CRM alone in improving balance and gait in adults with posterior canal BPPV.

Summary: This study evaluated the validity and responsiveness of four balance measures in cerebellar ataxia patients. The results showed that the BBS and SARA-bal had strong criterion and convergent validity, while the SOT and LOS had lower validity. The BBS, SARA-bal, and MXE-LOS(R) demonstrated satisfactory ability to classify stable and worsened patients at 6 and 12 months.

Summary: The VestAid application provides unique information about eye-gaze accuracy and detects eye movement abnormalities in participants with DE exposure, concussion, and vestibular neuritis. The objective metrics of eye-gaze stability correlate with participants' symptoms and perceived difficulty of the eye/head movements.

Summary: This study evaluated the combined effect of lower trapezius muscle (LTr-M) strengthening and pectoralis minor muscle (PMi-M) stretching on correcting rounded shoulder postures and shoulder flexion range of motion (SFROM) in young Saudi females. The combined effect was found to be more beneficial than PMi-M stretching alone in correcting rounded shoulder posture by increasing PMi-M resting length.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of a four-week exercise program on the roller skating talent and overall physical fitness proficiency in young male roller skaters. The results showed that the exercise program significantly improved skating performance, agility, and speed compared to physical education classes activities. However, there was no significant difference in balance improvement between the two groups.

Circulating microRNAs and hepcidin as predictors of iron homeostasis and anemia among school children: a biochemical and cross-sectional survey analysis

Hadeel A. Al-Rawaf, Sami A. Gabr, Amir Iqbal, Ahmad H. Alghadir

Summary: This study investigated the role of circulating microRNAs and hepcidin in controlling iron homeostasis in school children. The results showed that miR-146a, miR-125b, and miR-122 were significantly upregulated in adolescence with iron deficiency and iron deficiency anemia compared to iron-overloaded subjects. This study suggests that circulating microRNAs and serum hepcidin could be valuable markers for diagnosing and treating different iron deficiencies.
