Summary: This study conducted a comprehensive analysis to evaluate the benefits of negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) versus traditional dressings in preventing surgical site infections in patients undergoing cardiac surgery. The findings revealed that NPWT was more effective in reducing surgical site infections, deep wound infections, and hospital stays compared to conventional dressings. However, the rate of superficial wound infections was not significantly affected by the method of wound care.

Summary: Surgical site infections occur in 0.5% to 3% of patients undergoing surgery and are associated with longer hospital stays. Measures such as avoiding razors, maintaining normothermia, using chlorhexidine gluconate plus alcohol-based skin preparation, decolonization with intranasal antistaphylococcal agents, controlling perioperative glucose concentrations, and using negative pressure wound therapy can reduce the rate of surgical site infections.

Summary: This study aimed to analyze SSI and its risk factors in patients after thoracic or lumbar spine surgery, finding that only wound complications and warm seasons were significantly associated with SSI development according to multivariate regression analysis. Contrary to the prevailing literature, corticosteroids, diabetes mellitus, or transfusions were not identified as risk factors for SSI development.

Summary: A meta-analysis was conducted to evaluate the relationship between malnutrition and surgical site infection (SSI) after spinal surgery. The results showed that malnutrition significantly increased the incidence of SSI. However, further high-quality studies with larger sample sizes are needed to validate these results.

Summary: This systematic review assesses the accuracy of telemedicine in diagnosing Surgical Site Infection (SSI). The study found that telemedicine has high specificity in excluding SSI, but the accuracy of photograph methods is lower. Further research is needed to investigate the feasibility of telemedicine in the elderly population group.

Summary: The implementation of surgical site infection reduction bundles plays an important role in reducing surgical site infections, but different bundle elements have varying associations with infection reduction. Therefore, it is necessary to focus on the specific elements that have an impact on infection reduction during the implementation process.

Summary: Sternal surgical wound infection (SSWI) in cardiac surgery is rare but associated with increased postoperative complications. This study investigated the incidence, main germs, and predictors of SSWI. The need for early reoperation due to non-infectious causes and a longer ICU stay were independently associated with SSWI.

Summary: Surgical site infections (SSIs) are a common complication in surgical patients, especially in cardiac surgery patients. Sternum wound and graft harvesting site infections are the most common SSIs. Treatment and prevention strategies include the use of antibiotics, surgical intervention, and reducing preoperative risk factors.

Summary: Salvage surgery for small-cell lung cancer (SCLC) is a relatively new and rare concept, but it can be considered as an alternative treatment in selected patients with limited disease. It has similar postoperative morbidity to salvage surgery for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), with no postoperative mortality, and a median estimated overall survival of 92% at 2 years and 66% at 5 years. Salvage lung resection for SCLC offers good local control and a favorable survival outcome.

Summary: This article reviews the evidence for the use of surgery in the treatment of solitary fibrous tumors of the pleura. Surgery is the main treatment for these rare tumors, and minimally invasive techniques can be used depending on the tumor's characteristics. Long-term outcomes are generally good, but there is a risk of recurrence, particularly in aggressive histological types. Surgery can also be an option for local recurrence.
