Seabirds vector selenium (Se) into terrestrial ecosystems in Antarctica and on tropical coral islands, but factors controlling distribution within affected soils are unknown, especially in temperate regions. At a Westland petrel (Procellaria westlandica) breeding colony on mainland New Zealand, the concentration of Se in petrel guano (3.6 mg kg(-1)) exceeded soil parent material (0.8 mg kg(-1)) and in all but two soil samples (range 1.2-4.2 mg kg(-1); n = 52). External Se (Se not derived from parent material) accounted for 64 +/- 9% (mean +/- s.d.) of soil Se. Measurements were also made at a former seabird breeding site, and at a site with no Holocene seabird breeding. Median surface-soil Se concentrations (mg kg(-1)) were in the order burrow soil (2.6) > adjacent forest floor (2.2) > former breeding site (1.0) > control site (0.2), with significant differences between burrow soil and (1) the former breeding site and (2) the control site. In a linear regression model, soil pH, and delta N-15 were the only significant predictors of external Se in colony soil. The correlations are consistent with seabird input driving both the Se supply and increased sorptive uptake in an environment acidified by seabird guano. Despite the enhanced Se in colony soil, median foliage concentrations (tree fern 0.05 mg kg(-1), nikau 0.08 mg kg(-1)) were close to the accepted minimum for herbivore nutrition. Seabirds therefore contribute significant Se to breeding colony soils in temperate areas, but this is not necessarily transferred to plant foliage.

The Performance of Saccade Tasks Correlates with Cognitive Test Scores in Elderly Population: Evidence for the Usefulness of Oculomotor Tests in Cognitive Assessment

Junru Wu, Min Li, Wenbo Ma, Zhihao Zhang, Mingsha Zhang, Xuemei Li

Summary: Dementia is a common disorder among the elderly, and early diagnosis and intervention are crucial for effective treatment. Current neuropsychological tests have limitations, such as subjective judgments and high cost. This study proposes a cognitive assessment system based on measuring saccadic eye movements, which shows promising results in evaluating cognitive functions.

Summary: Admission-based circulating biomarkers can be used to predict outcomes in trauma patients, and multi-omic analyses can identify novel prognostic biomarkers. Proteins and multi-omic features were found to be effective in predicting adverse outcomes and survival, with unique features identified in traumatic brain injury patients.

Inner Lithium Fluoride (LiF)-Rich Solid Electrolyte Interphase Enabled by a Smaller Solvation Sheath for Fast-Charging Lithium Batteries

Hexin Guo, Yao Tian, Yuanming Liu, Yu Bai, Junru Wu, Feiyu Kang, Baohua Li

Summary: Researchers have found that the size effect of solvent sheath has a significant impact on the fast-charging performance of lithium-ion batteries. Diethyl ether (DEE) electrolyte, which can form stable graphite intercalation compounds (GICs) and generate a LiF-rich solid electrolyte interphase (SEI), demonstrates better performance in maintaining capacity after cycling compared to other similar ether electrolytes.

Enabling Enhanced Cycling Stability of a LiNi0.8Co0.15Al0.05O2 Cathode by Constructing a Ti-Rich Surface

Ziyao Gao, Kai Zhou, Junru Wu, Feiyu Kang, Chenglong Zhao, Lele Peng, Baohua Li

Summary: In this study, a Ti-rich interface of a LiNi0.8Co0.15Al0.05O2 (NCA) secondary particle was constructed using titanium nitride (TiN) nanopowders as a dopant to reduce interfacial reaction. The integration of Ti ions into the layered lattice during Ti-N dissociation and the enrichment within the surface layer effectively enhance interface stability, reduce lattice change, and improve cycle stability. The Ti-doping NCA cathode (NCATiN) exhibits thinner cathode-electrolyte interphases (CEI) and phase transition layers, leading to a better capacity retention of 90.9% over 200 cycles.

Summary: Alterations in lipid metabolism and circulating lipid species have been reported in patients with acute critical illness. Here the authors show that selective rise in systemic phosphatidylethanolamine levels is a common feature of critical illness that associates with worse clinical outcomes.

Summary: Severe traumatic injury can lead to direct and indirect organ injury, but there is a lack of tissue-specific biomarkers in clinical practice. This study used proteomic and metabolomic databases to identify organ injury patterns after severe injury in humans. The results showed that nonresolvers had a wide release of tissue-specific damage markers at admission, and at 72 hours, cardiac, liver, neurologic, and pulmonary injury biomarkers remained significantly elevated in nonresolvers compared with resolvers.

Serine/threonine kinase TBK1 promotes cholangiocarcinoma progression via direct regulation of beta-catenin

Chong-Qing Gao, Zhen-Zhen Chu, Di Zhang, Yang Xiao, Xing-Yan Zhou, Jun-Ru Wu, Hui Yuan, Yu-Chuan Jiang, Dong Chen, Ji-Chun Zhang, Nan Yao, Kai-Yun Chen, Jian Hong

Summary: In this study, the researchers found that TBK1 was upregulated in CCA and its expression was correlated with tumor size, lymph node metastasis, and TNM stage. Functional studies revealed that TBK1 promoted CCA growth and metastasis by interacting with beta-catenin and activating EMT-related transcriptional reprogramming. Furthermore, LDLR was also upregulated in CCA and a cholesterol-conjugated DNA/RNA heteroduplex oligonucleotide targeting TBK1 effectively inhibited intrahepatic metastasis of CCA. This study suggests that TBK1 could be a potential prognostic biomarker and therapeutic target for CCA patients.

The regulatory role of metabolic organ-secreted factors in the nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and cardiovascular disease

Li Qin, Junru Wu, Xuejing Sun, Xuewei Huang, Wei Huang, Chunyan Weng, Jingjing Cai

Summary: Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a chronic metabolic disease characterized by excessive fat accumulation in the liver, affecting about a quarter of the global population. Recent studies have found a high prevalence of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in NAFLD patients, but the underlying mechanisms are still unclear. This review summarizes the relationship between metabolic organ-secreted factors and NAFLD and CVD, aiming to enhance clinicians' understanding of these diseases and improve cardiovascular outcomes in NAFLD patients.

Meta-Analysis of Single-Cell RNA-Seq Data Reveals the Mechanism of Formation and Heterogeneity of Tertiary Lymphoid Organ in Vascular Disease

Xuejing Sun, Yao Lu, Junru Wu, Qing Wen, Zhengxin Li, Yan Tang, Yunmin Shi, Tian He, Lun Liu, Wei Huang, Chunyan Weng, Qing Wu, Qingzhong Xiao, Hong Yuan, Qingbo Xu, Jingjing Cai

Summary: Accumulation and infiltration of innate and adaptive immune cells in different types of vascular diseases are observed, and the proportion of these immune cells increases incrementally from atherosclerosis to intimal hyperplasia, abdominal aortic aneurysm, isograft, and allograft. TLO structure cells, such as follicular helper T cells and germinal center B cells, are present in all remodeled vessels. Inflammatory macrophages and T helper 17 cells play important roles in the development of TLOs. Vascular stromal cells communicate with immune cells and participate in TLO genesis through chemotactic mechanisms.
