Summary: The study aimed to investigate the antitumorigenic potential of a xanthohumol-enriched beer. The results showed that adding xanthohumol to beer did not have a protective effect on tumor growth or enhance plasma antioxidant capacity. However, it had a less harmful effect on the liver compared to an ethanolic solution.

Summary: Protein biosynthesis in mitochondria is closely linked to the assembly of inner membrane complexes and must be coordinated with cytosolic translation. The molecular mechanisms underlying mitochondrial translation regulation are not well understood. This study reveals that PTCD2 functions as a translational regulator of another mitochondrially encoded subunit of cytochrome c oxidase, COIII.

Summary: This study observed the cytotoxic activity of honey from Litchi chinensis and purified honey protein (PHP) on HeLa cells. Both honey and PHP significantly reduced cancer cell viability and induced apoptosis in a dose-dependent manner. The IC(50) of honey and PHP were found to be 3.5 mg/mL and 4.13 ng/mL, respectively. PHP intervention resulted in more apoptosis compared to honey treatment. These findings provide scientific rationale for the development of effective anti-proliferative agents and endorse the use of lychee honey and PHP as herbal medicines.

Summary: Arsenic is a highly toxic environmental pollutant that has harmful effects on human health. In order to study its impacts, researchers have attempted to develop in-vitro cell culture models as animal models are costly and time-consuming. However, most studies have not accurately represented realistic environmental exposure conditions. This study exposed human skin cells to water-soluble arsenic extracted from contaminated soil to investigate its effects on cell viability, migration, and protein expression. The results showed that arsenic had a greater impact on HaCaT cells compared to HDFa cells. This methodical approach provides a way to study the effects of toxic elements under realistic environmental conditions and can be adapted for different exposure pathways.

Summary: This study evaluated the toxic effects of thimerosal, aluminum, and their combination on SH-SY5Y cells. The results showed that both thimerosal and aluminum can alter the oxidant/antioxidant status, cause DNA damage, and change dopamine and DAT levels. The changes were more pronounced in cells treated with the combined exposure to aluminum and thimerosal.

Summary: The aim of this study is to evaluate the bioactive and tribological properties of the MgO doped borophosphate glass system. The addition of MgO promotes degradation of the glass and increases its bioactivity. In terms of tribological properties, the glass sample with 3% MgO exhibited the highest hardness and the lowest wear rate. MTT assay confirmed the non-toxic behavior of the glass samples. Therefore, MgO doped borophosphate glass shows potential for bone filling and wound healing applications.

Summary: The majority of rAAVs for clinical use are produced using the HEK293 cell line, but this platform has manufacturing bottlenecks such as low product quality and high cost. The HeLa-based stable cell line rAAV production system offers a scalable alternative, but has barriers due to time and complexity. This study developed a more streamlined and efficient process using the HeLaS3-based cell line, achieving high yield and purity of rAAV2.

Summary: This study explores the feasibility of using 3-aminopropyl triethoxysilane (3-APTES) crosslinked chitosan (Ch)/graphene oxide (GO) membranes for the adsorptive removal of anionic dyes from aqueous medium. The membranes were successfully fabricated through solution casting technique. Strong interactions among the matrix (chitosan), 3-APTES, polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and GO were confirmed by infrared spectroscopy. The addition of graphene oxide improved the thermal stability of the chitosan. The adsorption characteristics of the membranes were evaluated using Congo red (CR) dye, and the results showed that the membranes were capable of removing 80% of CR from aqueous medium following second order kinetics. This study highlights the potential of green membranes for various flow systems.

Summary: The experimental reports focused on the structural modification, mechanical properties, and magnetic properties of the Saudi meteorite. Various characterization techniques were employed to study the meteorite specimen. The analysis revealed that the meteorite mainly consisted of an iron-nickel alloy and exhibited soft material properties with a Rockwell hardness of 22.5 HRC. The magnetic measurements showed that the meteorite was a soft ferromagnetic material with a magnetic saturation of 0.701 emu/g at a saturation field of 5025 Oe. Mathematical modeling of hysteresis data was conducted, and a bi-exponential model was proposed as the most suitable model based on goodness of fit parameters.

Summary: The study aimed to formulate nanoparticles of thiolated chitosan with enhanced mucoadhesion and controlled release behavior. Stable nanoparticles were prepared using an ionic gelation method, and their adhesion, swelling, and toxicity were evaluated. Drug release studies of non-thiolated and thiolated nanoparticles showed that the thiolated nanoparticles exhibited better controlled release. Animal experiments confirmed the superior pharmacokinetic properties of the thiolated nanoparticles compared to the marketed formulation.
