LncRNAs have emerged as a novel class of critical regulators of cancer. We aimed to construct a landscape of lncRNAs and their potential target genes in lung adenocarcinoma. Genome-wide expression of lncRNAs and mRNAs was determined using microarray. qRT-PCR was performed to validate the expression of the selected lncRNAs in a cohort of 42 tumor tissues and adjacent normal tissues. R and Bioconductor were used for data analysis. A total of 3045 lncRNAs were differentially expressed between the paired tumor and normal tissues (1048 up and 1997 down). Meanwhile, our data showed that the expression NONHSAT077036 was associated with N classification and clinical stage. Further, we analyzed the potential co-regulatory relationship between the lncRNAs and their potential target genes using the 'cis' and 'trans' models. In the 25 related transcription factors (TFs), our analysis of The Cancer Genome Atlas database (TCGA) found that patients with lower expression of POU2F2 and higher expression of TRIM28 had a shorter overall survival time. The POU2F2 and TRIM28 co-expressed lncRNA landscape characterized here may shed light into normal biology and lung adenocarcinoma pathogenesis, and be valuable for discovery of biomarkers.

Quantitative parameter analysis of effects of particle density on the imaging signals in OCT

Chenxia Xie, Wanrong Gao, Yue Zhang, Weisong Shi

Summary: In this study, a method of deriving particle density information from temporal statistics of optical coherence tomography (OCT) signals is presented. By conducting phantom experiments with high and low concentration solutions, the probability density distribution of structural information at a specific depth is obtained, and four parameters are defined to characterize the curves. Through in vivo experiments on human skin, it is found that the four parameters of the skin are not strongly related to those of the simulated solution, and the reasons for this phenomenon are analyzed. The preliminary results of this research show that the probability density distribution, which has a depth dependence, is also affected by the sample concentration.

HIT-UAV: A high-altitude infrared thermal dataset for Unmanned Aerial Vehicle-based object detection

Jiashun Suo, Tianyi Wang, Xingzhou Zhang, Haiyang Chen, Wei Zhou, Weisong Shi

Summary: We introduce the HIT-UAV dataset, which is a collection of high-altitude infrared thermal images for object detection on UAVs. The dataset consists of 2,898 infrared thermal images extracted from hundreds of videos captured by UAVs in different scenarios. The HIT-UAV also provides flight data and manually annotated bounding boxes of object instances to tackle the challenge of object overlap in aerial images. Compared to visual light datasets, our results show that well-established object detection algorithms perform exceptionally well on the HIT-UAV, making it a valuable resource for UAV-based applications and research.

An Open Approach to Energy-Efficient Autonomous Mobile Robots

Liangkai Liu, Ren Zhong, Aaron Willcock, Nathan Fisher, Weisong Shi

Summary: This paper proposes a comprehensive energy prediction model for autonomous mobile robots (AMRs). By conducting empirical studies on real robots, the authors identify a lack of coordination between computation and control as a major source of energy inefficiency. They propose three path models to address the obstacle avoidance problem and evaluate the performance of their energy prediction and path models using a customized AMR. The results show accurate energy prediction and significant reduction in energy consumption through energy-efficient path selection.
