The Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) was exported to Korea in 2015, resulting in a threat to neighboring nations. We evaluated the possibility of using a digital surveillance system based on web searches and social media data to monitor this MERS outbreak. We collected the number of daily laboratory-confirmed MERS cases and quarantined cases from May 11, 2015 to June 26, 2015 using the Korean government MERS portal. The daily trends observed via Google search and Twitter during the same time period were also ascertained using Google Trends and Topsy. Correlations among the data were then examined using Spearman correlation analysis. We found high correlations (>0.7) between Google search and Twitter results and the number of confirmed MERS cases for the previous three days using only four simple keywords: MERS, (MERS (in Korean)), (MERS symptoms (in Korean)), and (MERS hospital (in Korean)). Additionally, we found high correlations between the Google search and Twitter results and the number of quarantined cases using the above keywords. This study demonstrates the possibility of using a digital surveillance system to monitor the outbreak of MERS.

Contours of virtual enfreakment in fighting game characters

Sercan Sengun, Peter Mawhorter, James Bowie-Wilson, Yusef Audeh, Haewoon Kwak, D. Fox Harrell

Summary: This study examines character design in fighting videogames such as Street Fighter V and Tekken 7, revealing the presence of racism and sexism manifested in stark differences in character design by gender and skin color. The analysis also shows that characters designed in dialogue with developers from their regions of origin are less enfreaked and more positively portrayed, suggesting the potential for implementing anti-bias character designs in popular video games.

Lupus anticoagulants as a prospective independent predictor in COVID-19 patients

Hyunji Kim, Daehyun Chu, Miyoung Kim, Young-uk Cho, Chan-jeoung Park, Seongman Bae, Min Jae Kim, Yong Pil Chong, Seongsoo Jang, Sung-Han Kim

Summary: This study suggests that Lupus anticoagulants (LA) are associated with disease severity in COVID-19 patients. The majority of LA-positive patients showed LA positivity within 10 days of SARS-CoV-2 infection, while a subgroup of patients initially tested negative for LA during the early stages of infection and became positive later.

Summary: This study evaluated the rate and composition of bacterial co-infection in COVID-19 patients and assessed the association between the use of empirical antibacterials and mortality. The results showed that bacterial co-infection was infrequent in the patients, and the co-infected organisms varied depending on the previous use of antibacterial drugs.

Summary: This study retrospectively analyzed the clinical characteristics and outcomes of invasive and non-invasive fusariosis in South Korea. Invasive fusariosis mainly affected immunocompromised patients and was associated with a poor prognosis. Non-invasive fusariosis was common in patients with diabetes and solid cancer.

Multicenter Testing of a Simple Molecular Diagnostic System for the Diagnosis of Mycobacterium Tuberculosis

Hyo Joo Lee, Nam Hun Kim, Eun Hye Lee, Young Soon Yoon, Yun Jeong Jeong, Byung Chul Lee, Bonhan Koo, Yoon Ok Jang, Sung-Han Kim, Young Ae Kang, Sei Won Lee, Yong Shin

Summary: This study proposes a simple tuberculosis molecular diagnostic assay that combines sample preparation and DNA detection steps. The sample preparation is done using a syringe filter with amine-functionalized diatomaceous earth and homobifunctional imidoester, and the target DNA is detected using quantitative PCR. The system has a detection limit that is 10 times higher than conventional PCR assays and can provide results within 2 hours from large volume samples without additional instruments. The clinical utility of the proposed method was validated in 88 sputum samples from four hospitals in the Republic of Korea, showing superior sensitivity compared to other assays. Therefore, this system can be useful for MTB diagnosis in limited-resource settings.

Summary: This study investigated the long-term kinetics of immune responses after heterologous booster vaccination and the impact of Omicron breakthrough infection. The findings showed that participants who experienced breakthrough infection during the BA.1/BA.2 period had a more robust increase in neutralizing antibody titers against the wild-type virus compared to BA.1 and BA.5.

Clinical Manifestation of Ralstonia mannitolilytica Infection in Pediatric Patients and Epidemiological Investigation of Outbreaks

Gahee Kim, Ree Nar Yoo, Hyejin So, Jeong-Young Lee, Mi-Na Kim, Sung-Han Kim, Won Kyoung Jhang, Seong Jong Park, Jina Lee

Summary: Ralstonia mannitolilytica is a causative organism of nosocomial infections, particularly associated with contaminated water, and resistant to various antibiotics, including carbapenems. In this study, 18 patients with R. mannitolilytica infection were included, with 94.4% diagnosed with pneumonia and 5.6% with central line-associated bloodstream infection. The all-cause 30-day mortality rate was 61.1%, and environmental sampling identified R. mannitolylica at a cold-water tap of a water purifier and an exhalation circuit of a patient mechanical ventilator.

Rates of COVID-19 Infection Among Healthcare Workers in Designated COVID-19 Wards and General Wards

Jiwon Jung, Sun-Kyung Kim, Yumi Lee, Soyeon Park, Young-Ju Lim, Eun Ok Kim, Sung-Han Kim

Summary: This study compares the rates of COVID-19 infection in healthcare workers (HCWs) working in COVID-19 designated wards and general wards. The findings show that HCWs in designated wards have a lower rate of contracting COVID-19. Possible factors contributing to this finding include a lack of exposure to undiagnosed cases and their caregivers, greater care with social distancing outside the hospital, higher rates of 3-dose vaccinations, and the use of isolation rooms with negative pressure.
