Summary: In order to control the mustard aphid (L. erysimi), a pest that infests cruciferous crops and transmits plant viruses, eco-friendly pest management using entomopathogenic fungi (EPF) is needed. Before field application, it is necessary to screen the virulence of EPF isolates under Petri dish conditions. However, the parthenogenetic reproduction of the aphids makes it difficult to record data during the experiments. To address this issue, a modified system for detached-leaf bioassays was developed, allowing for stable evaluation of EPF virulence against mustard aphids or other aphids.

Summary: This study demonstrates the important role of sucrase 1 (SUC1) in mitigating osmotic pressure in the insect gut and successfully develops transgenic Indian mustard plants expressing SUC1 hairpin RNA for host-mediated delivery into infesting aphids. The research also shows a significant reduction in aphid fecundity and detection of SUC1-specific siRNA molecules in aphids fed on transgenic plants, indicating the potential for engineering RNAi-based resistance against aphids in Brassica crops.

Summary: Aphids rely on their olfactory system for foraging and odorant-degrading enzymes (ODEs) are important for maintaining their olfactory acuity. In this study, the antennal ODE genes of turnip aphid Lipaphis erysimi were identified and analyzed. The expression levels of 13 ODE genes were found to be significantly elevated in antennal tissues, and some of them showed higher expression in alate aphids, suggesting their potential role in detecting new host plant location.

Summary: This study investigated the efficacy of neem leaf extract, mahogany seed dust, and neem seed kernel dust against the mustard aphid and found that these botanicals have a certain control effect on the aphid population. However, the fruit and seed yield of mustard were affected by the efficacy of these botanicals.

Summary: The study identified and analyzed OBP/CSP genes in L. erysimi, finding 11 LeryOBP and 4 LeryCSP transcripts. Expression analysis showed elevated expression of 5 LeryOBP genes and LeryCSP10 in the antennae, suggesting their potential role in perceiving new host plant locations.

Summary: This study investigated levels of infestation, yield loss, and the efficacy of biopesticides and neonicotinoids in managing the mustard aphid in Brassica juncea. The results showed significant effects of cultivars, seasons, and treatments on aphid populations and seed yield. Late-sown conditions had higher aphid populations and lower seed yield. Insecticide applications effectively reduced aphid populations, with dimethoate performing best among the treatments. Among biopesticides, Beauveria bassiana showed the greatest efficacy. Thiomethoxam and imidacloprid were the most effective neonicotinoids. Control of aphid populations could prevent significant yield loss.

Summary: The goal of this study was to accurately identify the dominant specialist aphid of Rapeseed-mustard and address the genetic differentiation among different growing regions in India. The findings revealed a high divergence in the aphid populations in the Northeastern region of India, and the presence of L. e. pseudobrassicae throughout the surveyed locations in India.

Summary: The study found significant differences among Brassica juncea genotypes in terms of developmental parameters, fecundity, and survival of Lipaphis erysimi. Certain genotypes exhibited higher levels of defense biochemicals, which negatively impacted the reproductive period, fecundity, and survival of the mustard aphid.

Summary: The study investigated the resistance categories of selected canola genotypes against mustard aphid. Genotype 'KS-75' showed antixenosis and antibiosis resistance against the aphid. It attracted/sustained fewer aphids and produced a lower number of progenies compared to other genotypes.

Summary: Climate change affects the population distribution of pests and their natural enemies. This study predicts the distribution trends of Lipaphis erysimi (a vegetable pest) and its natural enemy Eupeodes corollae Fabricius under different climate conditions using the MaxEnt model. The results show that different climatic conditions influence the spread of these species differently, and environmental factors play a key role in their survival and spread.

Summary: The choice of reference genes heavily influences the assessment of differential gene expression by qPCR. Recent studies suggest using RNA-Seq to identify stable genes and statistical approaches to determine the best reference genes. However, this study demonstrates that the statistical approach to determine the best reference genes from commonly used candidates is more important than preselecting stable genes from RNA-Seq data.
