This study develops a cluster-based lognormal distribution model for the purpose of predicting accident duration. With Maryland I-95 freeway traffic accident data collected in 2010 and 2011, this study first uses a decision tree approach to split the entire sample data into three clusters which are then treated as additional variables in modelling accident duration. The results show that seven explanatory variables and cluster variables significantly affect the mean accident duration. With the cluster-based lognormal distribution model, the mean and the probability of an accident duration being unacceptable can be predicted from the base accident information. Such predictions can be utilised as a basis for making rational diversion in the event of an accident, which will help mitigate traffic congestion and improve travel time reliability.

Exploring the operational performance discrepancies between online ridesplitting and carpooling transportation modes based on DiDi data

Haoran Chen, Xuedong Yan, Xiaobing Liu, Tao Ma

Summary: With the rapid development of internet technologies and shared mobility services, online ridesharing services have become popular worldwide. This study compares the operational performance of two major online ridesharing modes, ridesplitting and carpooling, using actual operating data provided by DiDi Chuxing. The findings indicate that ridesplitting has lower fuel-saving and distance-saving ratios compared to carpooling, and online ridesharing is not considered fuel-saving in terms of transportation system's fuel economy.

Optimization on transport of charge carriers in cathode of sulfide electrolyte-based solid-state lithium-sulfur batteries

Zengqi Zhang, Yantao Wang, Tao Liu, Gang Li, Jun Ma, Jianjun Zhang, Pengxian Han, Shanmu Dong, Xuedong Yan, Yue Tang, Guanglei Cui

Summary: Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries have the potential to achieve an energy density of 500 Wh·kg(-1), but poor cycle stability due to the shuttle effect and safety concerns from flammable electrolytes hinder their practical application. Sulfide-based electrolytes can address these issues due to their low solubility to polysulfide, high ionic conductivity, and safety properties. This review focuses on the research progress of enhancing charge carrier transport in the composite cathode of solid-state Li-S batteries (SSLSBs). Materials with good conductivity and strategies optimizing interfacial contact and reducing interfacial resistance are crucial for improving the cycle stability of SSLSBs. Potential future research directions and prospects for SSLSBs with improved energy density and cycle performance are also discussed.

Bi-level optimization for customized bus routing serving passengers with multiple-trips based on state-space-time network

Yunlin Guan, Wang Xiang, Yun Wang, Xuedong Yan, Yi Zhao

Summary: The emerging customized bus (CB) provides personalized trip services for passengers with multiple-trip requests, optimizing the routing of CBs based on a loading-state-oriented state-space-time network-based bi-level programming model. The proposed model and algorithm, combining the genetic algorithm (GA) and the augmented Lagrangian relaxation-based dynamic programming algorithm, can adapt to passengers' personalized trip requests and improve the public transport service level. The results show that the method can optimize CB routing plans for passengers with multiple-trip requests and different network scales, ultimately reducing energy consumption and promoting sustainable development.

A novel deep learning framework for detecting seafarer's unsafe behavior

Haifeng Ding, Jinxian Weng, Bing Han

Summary: This study proposes an improved deep learning framework with a self-made dataset to detect seafarers' unsafe behaviors. The improved Cross Stage Partial (CSP) module is introduced to increase the detection speed, replacing the original CSP module in the traditional algorithm. The efficient channel attention (ECA) module is also added as the attention mechanism network in the backbone network of the conventional algorithm. The experiment results show that the proposed framework outperforms traditional object detection algorithms in detecting seafarers' unsafe behaviors due to its higher detection speed and accuracy.

Lifecycle Cost Optimization for Electric Bus Systems With Different Charging Methods: Collaborative Optimization of Infrastructure Procurement and Fleet Scheduling

Yongxing Wang, Chaoru Lu, Jun Bi, Qiuyue Sai, Xiaobo Qu

Summary: Battery electric buses (BEBs) are effective options for sustainable mobility, but their promotion is hindered by high lifecycle costs. In this research, a collaborative optimization model is developed to reduce costs by synchronously planning infrastructure procurement and fleet scheduling. A numerical case study demonstrates that the proposed model can effectively lower lifecycle costs and perform sensitivity analysis.

Seasonal precipitation regulates magnitude and direction of the effect of nitrogen addition on net ecosystem CO2 exchange in saline-alkaline grassland of northern China

Huajie Diao, Jianqiang Yang, Jie Hao, Xuedong Yan, Kuanhu Dong, Changhui Wang

Summary: Increased nitrogen deposition and altered precipitation regimes have significant interactive effects on carbon flux in saline-alkaline grasslands. The interaction of nitrogen addition and increased precipitation significantly improved ecosystem CO2 fluxes, with higher gross-ecosystem productivity and net ecosystem CO2 exchange. This interaction also stimulated water use efficiency, but had no significant effects on carbon use efficiency over four years. The effects of nitrogen addition on net ecosystem CO2 exchange were influenced by seasonal precipitation.

Haonan Guo, Yun Wang, Pan Shang, Xuedong Yan, Yunlin Guan

Summary: This study focuses on the customised bus routing problem with passenger-to-station assignment (CBRP-PSA) aiming to minimize passengers' CB service access cost and the bus route cost simultaneously. A time-discretized multi-commodity network flow model is developed and decomposed into two solvable sub-problems through dualization. A Lagrangian-based heuristic solution algorithm is proposed to solve this problem effectively.

Summary: In this study, we propose a fuel consumption prediction model called FuelNet, based on the long short-term memory (LSTM) neural networks. The model is developed using vehicle kinematics data and corresponding fuel consumption data. The accuracy of the prediction is analyzed based on different combinations of input variables, training set size, and sampling interval. The superior performance of FuelNet is demonstrated through comparison with five other models, and its applicability is tested in different driving scenarios.
