Summary: Chronic pain is associated with psychological distress, with catastrophizing being a significant factor. Pain intensity is only associated with psychological distress when not controlling for other variables. Most patients attribute their TMD symptoms to physical causes. The findings support psychological interventions targeting catastrophizing and a multidisciplinary approach to TMD treatment.

Summary: This study found that sex workers have a higher probability of experiencing bruxism and temporomandibular disorders compared to the general population, highlighting the need for more attention and research on oral health issues in this population.

Summary: This study conducted a meta-analysis of the literature and found a correlation between posture and temporomandibular disorders (TMDs). Nerve pathways are likely to regulate both body posture and mandibular posture. Further clinical studies are needed to confirm this hypothesis and provide conclusive interpretations.

Summary: Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are musculoskeletal diseases affecting the jaw muscles and temporomandibular joints. Chronic TMD can be considered as a condition with chronic primary orofacial pain. The main objectives of treatment are to decrease pain, improve jaw joint function, and reduce muscle spasms and pain.

Summary: This systematic review investigated the distribution and severity of anxiety and depression in patients diagnosed with different subtypes of temporomandibular disorder (TMD). The findings suggest that patients with myofascial pain are more anxious and more depressed than patients with other subtypes of TMD. Proper assessment of the psychological state of patients is essential for offering adequate treatment and management of each specific subtype of TMD.

Summary: The aim of this study was to assess the inter- and intrarater reliability of a recently proposed scoring system for temporomandibular disorders (TMD) based on MRI findings. The results showed no significant differences between observers in the scores for the articular disk and the direction of disk luxation. However, significant differences were found in the assessment of osseous joint alterations. The DLJ scoring system based on MRI findings is feasible for routine clinical TMD assessment and may help to simplify interdisciplinary communication between radiologists and clinicians.

Summary: TNF-alpha plays a significant role in the pathogenesis of TMD by triggering immune responses, deteriorating bone and cartilage, and mediating pain in the temporomandibular joint. Downstream cytokines induced by TNF-alpha and neuropeptides can regulate central sensitization and inflammatory pain in TMD.

Summary: This study explored the concept of using a CSI cutoff of 40 to identify patients with endometriosis who have pain associated with central nervous system sensitization. A significant correlation was found between the number of central sensitivity syndromes (CSS) and pain scores, as well as the CSI score. A CSI cutoff of 40 demonstrated high sensitivity and specificity in identifying patients with >= 3 CSS, suggesting its potential as a practical tool in clinical settings.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the percentage of temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD) in headache patients admitted to the neurology outpatient clinic. Among 349 headache patients, TMD was detected in 25% of them, and the incidence of TMD was higher in migraine patients compared to other diagnoses.

Summary: This study evaluated the changes in intra-articular spaces of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) in patients with temporomandibular disorders (TMD) after occlusal splint therapy combined with cranio-temporomandibular kinesiotherapy. The condylar ratio significantly increased after treatment, but the dimensions of anterior, superior, posterior, and medial joint spaces did not show statistically significant changes. Additionally, the condylar position did not significantly shift anteriorly after the combination therapy.

Summary: This study found a significant association between TMD pain and self-reported frequency of awake bruxism, as well as between TMD dysfunction and frequent awake bruxism and occasional sleep bruxism. Multivariable analysis showed that TMD pain was significantly associated with TMD dysfunction and stress, while TMD dysfunction was only associated with TMD pain. Network analysis demonstrated that TMD pain acted as a bridge between awake bruxism, stress, and TMD dysfunction.

Summary: This article discusses medical emergencies that occur in patients with temporomandibular disorders, which pose significant challenges for clinicians. Examples of these emergencies include disc displacement without reduction and sudden contraction of the inferior part of the lateral pterygoid muscle. The article also explores sudden attacks of pain associated with secondary trigeminal neuralgia and other emergencies such as myofascial pain syndrome, traumatic and inflammatory states of the temporomandibular joints, subluxation, and consequences of intense occlusive parafunctions. The recommended therapeutic methods for these emergencies are described, emphasizing the potential for permanent damage to the soft tissue structures of the temporomandibular joints if incorrect treatment and rehabilitation are implemented.

Summary: This study investigates the relationships between modifiable health risk factors and recognition memory. The results indicate complex associations between depression, inflammation, trait anxiety, and recognition memory. Higher levels of depression and inflammation are related to poorer recollection but better familiarity, while higher levels of trait anxiety are related to better recollection but not familiarity.
