Summary: This review explores the potential of a zebrafish model in investigating the antioxidant effects of olive oil and wine, which are key components of the Mediterranean diet, in preventing age-related diseases, particularly cardiovascular conditions. The review highlights the genetic proximity of zebrafish to humans, offering a unique opportunity for translational insights into the health benefits of olive oil and wine.

Summary: This study examined the relationship between maternal nutrition during pre-pregnancy and early pregnancy and the incidence of small-for-gestational-age neonates in women with gestational diabetes mellitus. The findings suggest that higher fat intake and lower intake of carbohydrates, fiber, magnesium, and copper during early pregnancy are associated with an increased risk of small-for-gestational-age neonates. These results emphasize the importance of assessing and modifying maternal nutrition in reducing the risk of gestational diabetes mellitus and its associated complications.

Summary: The use of various a priori indexes to assess maternal adherence to the Mediterranean diet during pregnancy highlights the need for standardized criteria. Common dietary components among the different indexes include vegetables, fruits, and fish. The incongruent definitions of the Mediterranean diet in the indexes may hinder effective comparisons in studies related to maternal or offspring health outcomes.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between fatty acid intake and dietary fat quality in pregnant women and birth-weight categories of their newborns. It was found that a better-quality fat intake in the maternal diet could reduce the chance of a large-for-gestational-age newborn.

Summary: Olive oil is the main source of added fat in the Mediterranean diet, and it has been shown to improve obesity-related factors. However, the relationship between Mediterranean diet, olive oil, and obesity-related cancers, as well as the underlying mechanisms, are not well understood.

Summary: This study aims to identify the relationship between adherence to a Mediterranean diet before conception and the risk of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) in Greek pregnant women. The study found that high adherence to a Mediterranean diet before pregnancy is associated with a lower incidence of GDM. Additionally, pre-pregnancy consumption of meat is associated with a higher risk of GDM.

Summary: Limited evidence exists on the effects of maternal dietary patterns on birth weight, and most studies conducted so far did not adjust their findings for gestational age and sex, leading to potentially biased conclusions. In this study, a novel method was applied to derive dietary patterns among pregnant women and evaluate the associations with birth weight for gestational age. The findings suggest that adherence to an unhealthy dietary pattern is associated with an increased likelihood of having a large for gestational age newborn.

Summary: The consumption of extra virgin olive oil has been shown to reduce the development of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), with nitro-fatty acids potentially playing a key role in this benefit. Supplementation with olive oil and nitrite can improve liver mitochondrial function in mice and reduce fat liver accumulation.

Summary: This narrative review synthesizes and illustrates the characteristics and clinical applications of extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) and its components in the field of clinical nutrition and dietetics. EVOO has diverse health properties and can be used in diet therapy and as a supplement to improve cardiovascular health, lipoprotein metabolism, and diabetes mellitus. However, more research is needed to provide specific recommendations for its therapeutic use in different diseases and populations.

Summary: This study aimed to characterize the modulation of exosomal lncRNAs, mRNAs and miRNAs after a 1-year adherence to different diets. Results showed that Mediterranean diets enriched with nuts or extra-virgin olive oil significantly altered exosomal RNA content compared to a low-fat diet, with implications on metabolic pathways. Further investigation into the impact of exosomal RNAs from dietary interventions is warranted.

Summary: The purpose of this study was to analyze the Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQoL) in patients with prostate cancer (PCa) at diagnosis, based on tumor extension and urinary symptomatology, and explore factors associated with HRQoL. The study found that the mental dimension of HRQoL in patients with PCa was significantly lower than in the control group, especially for cases with severe urinary symptoms and metastatic tumors. Comorbidities and urinary symptoms were variables associated with the HRQoL of PCa cases.

Summary: A systematic analysis of clinical practice guidelines and consensus statements for prostate and endometrial cancers found that shared decision-making was more often recommended in prostate cancer guidelines compared to endometrial cancer guidelines. These findings highlight the need for new guidelines to consider shared decision-making for both male and female patients in cancer care.

Summary: The World Health Organization estimates that one fifth of university students have experienced major depressive disorder at some point in their lives. Low omega-3 fatty acid and vitamin D levels, both nutrients found in fish, have been linked to depression. A study on Spanish university students found that a lower consumption of fish is associated with a higher incidence of depression, but other social factors of the student may also influence the development of the disorder.

Summary: The objective of this study was to investigate the relationship between body weight and diet, physical activity, and other habits among freshman students, and to determine whether these habits have changed in the post-COVID-19 era. A cross-sectional study was conducted using data from 11 Spanish universities, with a total of 10,096 first-year university students participating. The results showed that students who did not meet the WHO criteria for physical activity, spent long hours sitting, and skipped breakfast had a higher prevalence of obesity. The study also found that the prevalence of overweight/obesity increased significantly during the lockdown period.

Summary: This systematic review aimed to identify the extent of patient and public involvement (PPI) reported in randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of lifestyle interventions and its impact on enrolment and retention rates. The findings suggest that PPI can improve the retention of participants in RCTs with lifestyle interventions, but its impact on enrolment rates is unclear. Overall, PPI should be encouraged in the RCT research process.
