Summary: This study compared the prognostic value of Modified Early Warning Score (MEWS) and National Early Warning Score (NEWS) in predicting ICU readmission, mortality, and related outcomes in critically ill patients. The results showed that MEWS had significantly higher accuracy in predicting outcomes such as readmission, time to readmission, and mechanical ventilation after readmission compared to NEWS, although there was no significant difference between the two scores in predicting mortality.

Summary: The infection rate in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is high and poses a significant risk to critically ill neonates and premature infants. The current monitoring system is incomplete and lacks early warning capabilities. This study developed an intelligent monitoring system using physiological sensors and wireless network technology to provide real-time monitoring and early warning signals, aiming to reduce the infection rate and improve preventive measures in the NICU.

Summary: During the influenza epidemic season, the disposition of elderly patients with influenza to the intensive care unit (ICU) is a crucial issue. The study found that using the national early warning score (NEWS) to predict ICU admission in elderly patients with influenza infections is effective and can help avoid unnecessary ICU admissions.

Summary: MEWS is a useful tool for predicting clinical deterioration, ICU admission, and mortality in immunocompromised cancer patients on chemotherapy. MEWS >= 3 calculated 12-36 hours before positive blood culture is the best predictor of ICU admission for this group.

Summary: This study evaluated the ability of MEWS to predict mortality in hematologic patients transferred from the ward to the ICU, finding that MEWS values ≥6 were associated with a higher probability of death. The findings suggest that using these scores can improve awareness of organ failure and prompt earlier ICU admission, leading to decreased overall morbidity and mortality. Further studies are needed to explore the extension of these scores beyond hematologic patients or in settings outside of the ICU.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the predictive value of the modified early warning score (MEWS) and derived quick Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (qSOFA) scores for intensive care unit admission in patients with a hematologic malignancy. The results showed that higher MEWS and qSOFA scores were associated with admission. MEWS was a sensitive predictor of ICU admission, superior to qSOFA.

Summary: This study aimed to develop a simplified and accurate scoring system, MNEWS, based on the national early warning score, NEWS, to predict the mortality of ICU patients. The performance of MNEWS, APACHE II, and the original NEWS systems in predicting mortality was evaluated using AUROC analysis. The results showed that MNEWS and APACHE II had better performance than NEWS in predicting hospital mortality and 90-day mortality. MNEWS had a high calibration ability in predicting hospital mortality and was confirmed in the validation cohort. In conclusion, MNEWS is a simple and accurate scoring system for evaluating the severity and predicting outcomes of ICU patients.

Summary: This study assessed the effectiveness of a laboratory-based admission score in predicting in-patient death or cardiac arrest in general medical patients. The results showed that the score was a fair to good predictor for these outcomes in both general medical patients and the older patient cohort. Prospective interventional studies are needed to further evaluate the clinical utility of this admission score.

Summary: This study compared the efficacy of APACHE II, MEWS, and PSS scores in predicting ICU admission and mortality of acute pesticide-poisoned patients. The results showed that PSS had the best discriminatory power in predicting ICU admission and mortality. APACHE II and MEWS scores had similar performance in predicting ICU admission, and PSS and APACHE II scores had similar performance in predicting mortality of ALP-poisoned patients. The study concluded that these scores are good discriminators for outcome prediction of acute pesticide poisoning on admission.

Summary: We evaluated the prognostic value of serum cholinesterase (SChE) levels in ICU-admitted patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection. Results showed that low SChE activity was associated with a severe outcome, suggesting its potential as a biomarker for prognostic risk stratification.

Summary: Patients with pulmonary hypertension (PH) seeking emergency care in US. EDs from 2010 to 2014 were significantly more likely to require ICU admission and hospitalization than all other patients. They also had longer hospital stays, increased risk of inpatient mortality, and underwent more critical care procedures. These findings indicate the high acuity of PH patients seeking emergency care and highlight the need for further research in this population.

Summary: The national early warning score (NEWS) has good diagnostic accuracy for early prediction of mortality in patients with infections outside the ICU, but shows poor sensitivity and performance in the elder population. A NEWS score of 5 is more sensitive, serving as a better threshold for activating urgent assessment and treatment.

Summary: The study aimed to compare the ability of different Early Warning Scores (EWS) to predict poor outcomes in adult patients in the emergency department. The results showed that NEWS was the most accurate predictor, followed by NEWS2. Neural network analysis highlighted the need for improvements in sepsis diagnosis and the measurement of respiratory rate.

Summary: The study aimed to develop, validate, and deploy models for predicting delirium in critically ill adult patients as early as ICU admission. A retrospective cohort study was conducted using data from 6238 critically ill patients in a university teaching hospital in Taipei, Taiwan. The models used logistic regression (LR), gradient boosted trees (GBT), and deep learning (DL) algorithms to predict delirium upon ICU admission (ADM) and at 24h (24H) after ICU admission, and the performance of the models was compared.
