The cultivation and use of medicinal plants has accompanied the evolution of mankind since antiquity, together with the development of techniques for their cultivation and management. In the search for sustainability of agroecosystems, the use of sources for fertiliser that provide the necessary nutrients for crops should be handled so as to cause the least possible environmental impact. The aim of this study was to evaluate the availability of N, P, K, Ca, Mg, Cu, Zn, Fe and Mn, and the heavy metals Cd, Pb and Cr, in tarragon plants (Artemisia dracunculus) subjected to different fertilisers, organic (swine-manure based compost) and mineral, in a dystrophic Red Argisol (PVd). The experimental design was completely randomised (DIC) in a 2 x 3 factorial scheme, comprising two sources and three levels of fertilisation (no fertilisation, recommended dose and double the recommended dose), giving a total of six treatments with four replications. The results showed that the source as well as the level of fertiliser influenced availability of the elements under evaluation in the plants. The organic fertilizer provided higher concentrations of Cu and Mn. Mineral fertilisation provided higher levels of the nutrients N and K. The heavy metals Cd and Cr showed no concentrations within the limits of detection for the method used.

Sugarcane biomass colonized by Pleurotus ostreatus for red 4B dye removal: a sustainable alternative

Laianne Pezenti Crespao, Andressa Giombelli Rosenberger, Fabiana da Silva Lima, Miria Benetati Delgado Berteli, Douglas Cardoso Dragunski, Nelson Barros Colauto, Giani Andrea Linde, Affonso Celso Goncalves, Josiane Caetano

Summary: The study found that fungal colonized biosorbent has better adsorption capacity for red 4B dye, showing monolayer adsorption at low concentrations and multilayer adsorption at high concentrations. As temperature increases, the adsorption capacity decreases, and non-colonized biosorbent demonstrated higher biosorption capacity in industrial effluent.

Summary: A novel molecularly imprinted solid-phase extraction (MISPE) method was developed for the simultaneous preconcentration of imazapyr (IMP), imazapic (IMZ) and imazethapyr (IMT) with determination by HPLC-PAD. The method showed superior analytical performance compared to commercial adsorbents and achieved good recovery values when applied to spiked surface water and rice samples.

Summary: This study evaluated the capacity of canola meal-based adsorbents for Cd2+ removal from water. The materials were characterized by their chemical composition and thermal stability, and the most likely mechanism for Cd adsorption was found to be physical. The use of canola meal as a feedstock for activated biochar production shows potential for producing competitive adsorbents.

Summary: The purpose of this research was to develop activated carbons from tobacco for efficient removal of Cd2+. The activated carbons showed irregular morphology, various surface functional groups, and enhanced specific surface area. Cd2+ adsorption was optimized at 4.0 g L-1 dosage and pH 3.0 to 7.0, with most adsorption occurring within the first 10-20 minutes.

Evaluation of benthic macroinvertebrates as indicators of metal pollution in Brazilian rivers

Jessica Manfrin, Daniel Schwantes, Affonso Celso Goncalves, Andreia da Paz Schiller, Juliano Zimmermann, Vinicius Henrique Dias de Oliveira

Summary: The evaluation of water quality in Alvorada and Mandaguari rivers revealed high metal concentrations in sediments and bioaccumulation of toxic metals in benthic macroinvertebrates, indicating the presence of biological accumulation and insertion in the food chain. The use of BMWP' index for evaluation may not reflect the real conditions of watersheds, suggesting a need for reevaluation method. Environmental assessment using macroinvertebrates is a good tool to investigate impacts in rivers.
