The aim of this cross-sectional study was to compare data on the level of aerobic capacity and body composition of nonspecific chronic low back pain (CLBP) patients with normative data matched for sex, age and level of sporting activity. The study population consisted of 101 outpatients with nonspecific CLBP who had entered a rehabilitation programme. Results were as follows: the mean (standard deviation) aerobic capacity (VO2max) of CLBP patients was significantly (P<0.001) lower 7.3 (5.6) ml/kg lean body mass/min as compared with the normative data. The mean (standard deviation) body fat percentage of the patients was significantly (P<0.001) higher 3.9 % (5.9) as compared with the normative data. These results provide evidence of a reduced level of aerobic capacity and an increased body fat percentage in nonspecific CLBP patients compared with healthy participants. Summary: Despite variations in counseling received by patients, the physical activity counseling program in Dutch rehabilitation centers was successfully implemented and received positive feedback from professionals and patients. However, no substantial differences in physical activity outcomes were found among different counseling profiles identified in the study.

Questionnaires to Assess Facilitators and Barriers of Early Mobilization in Critically Ill Patients; Which One to Choose? A Systematic Review

P. T. Yvonne Dikkema, Marianne K. Nieuwenhuis, Cees P. van der Schans, Leonora J. Mouton

Summary: Implementing and performing early mobilization in critically ill patients is a complex process that requires multidisciplinary input and cooperation. Various surveys have been developed to gain insights into its facilitators and barriers. A systematic review identified 13 unique questionnaires with wide variations in development extent, but only six assessed validity and reliability. Recommendations for choosing a questionnaire depend on the aim of its use, required level of detail, and specifics of the ICU.

Test-retest reliability and concurrent validity of the Adapted Short QUestionnaire to ASsess Health-enhancing physical activity (Adapted-SQUASH) in adults with disabilities

Bregje L. Seves, Femke Hoekstra, Jorrit W. A. Schoenmakers, Pim Brandenbarg, Trynke Hoekstra, Florentina J. Hettinga, Rienk Dekker, Lucas H. van der Woude, Cees P. van der Schans

Summary: The study examined the test-retest reliability and concurrent validity of the Adapted Short QUestionnaire to Assess Health-enhancing physical activity (Adapted-SQUASH) in adults with disabilities. The results suggest that while the Adapted-SQUASH is acceptable for assessing self-reported physical activity in large populations of adults with disabilities, there are limitations at the individual level, and differences exist between self-reported physical activity assessed with the Adapted-SQUASH and physical activity assessed with the Actiheart activity monitor.

Trends in Daily Heart Rate Variability Fluctuations Are Associated with Longitudinal Changes in Stress and Somatisation in Police Officers

Summary: This study investigates the relationship between trends in daily HRV and stress, depression, anxiety, and somatisation. Results suggest that an increasing trend in HRVsd is associated with increases in stress and somatisation, while an increasing trend in HRV buffers against the association between HRVsd trend and somatisation change. However, depression and anxiety were not related to trends in HRV or HRVsd.

The importance of families in nursing care: attitudes of nurses in the Netherlands

Ellen Hagedoorn, Wolter Paans, Tiny Jaarsma, Joost C. Keers, Cees P. van der Schans, Marie Louise A. Luttik

Summary: Positive attitudes towards family involvement are crucial for improving collaboration in nursing care. This study found that only a minority of nurses viewed families as collaboration partners or actively involved them in patient care planning. Nurses' attitudes were influenced by work experience, work setting, and existing family policies in patient care. Policies should be implemented to encourage family involvement and educational institutions need to emphasize its importance in nursing care.
