Summary: Previous studies have shown that mindfulness has a positive effect on inhibitory control, but this relationship might depend on the context. This study provides evidence that inhibitory control is challenged when perceiving attractive faces, particularly when individuals are mindful. The findings suggest that mindfulness interventions aimed at enhancing inhibitory control may not be effective when individuals are exposed to attractive faces.

Summary: This study focuses on Heart Rate Variability (HRV) measured during mindful breathing meditation. Two commonly used HRV metrics, root mean square of successive differences (RMSSD) and standard deviation of RR intervals (SDRR), are computed in terms of Fourier components. The study finds that RMSSD preferentially weights higher frequency Fourier modes, making it unsuitable for mindful breathing meditation which emphasizes slow breathing. A new metric called the autonomic balance index (ABI) is proposed, which uses Respiratory Sinus Arrhythmia to quantify the contribution of the parasympathetic nervous system to HRV. The study applies this metric to HRV data collected during two different meditation techniques and shows that the autonomic balance index is significantly elevated during mindful breathing, making it a good signal for biofeedback during meditation sessions.

Summary: This study evaluated two novel ways to enrich the lives of pet dogs in the home—Dog Assisted Mindfulness (DAM) intervention and Dog Interactions (DI) intervention. Both interventions enhanced owner-dog connection, promoted relaxation, happiness, and engagement for participants, with an additional benefit of ‘dog happiness’ in the interactions group. Future studies should investigate this in a more objective manner and encourage regular owner-dog interactions.

Summary: This study examined the relationship between dispositional mindfulness and control modes, finding that mindful individuals exhibit a balanced use of proactive and reactive control and greater flexibility in performance. The results suggest that mindfulness is associated with less attachment to previous contextual information, allowing for more flexible cognitive processing.

Summary: This study found an association between mindfulness and nightmares, with mindful acceptance showing a stronger relationship with nightmare frequency and distress. Individuals with high levels of meditation expertise and practice of lucid dream induction techniques reported lower nightmare frequency. In frequent lucid dreamers, there was a positive correlation between lucid dreaming frequency and mindfulness.

Summary: This proof-of-concept trial evaluated the effectiveness of Perinatal Understanding of Mindful Awareness for Sleep (PUMAS) in improving insomnia, depression, and cognitive arousal in pregnant women. The results showed significant improvements in insomnia, depression, and cognitive arousal after using PUMAS. This study highlights the importance of PUMAS in the treatment of prenatal insomnia.

Summary: Recent studies have shown promising safety and efficacy data for non-pharmacologic and mindful-based approaches for the prevention and treatment of headache and migraine in children and adolescents. Consider incorporating these multi-modal approaches into therapeutic management strategies for pediatric patients with headache disorders. Further prospective studies and/or randomized-controlled trials are needed to assess the efficacy and cost-effectiveness of these methods.

Summary: This study compared the effects of MVPA, mindfulness training, and combined MVPA and mindfulness training on physiological and psychological outcomes. Findings showed that the physiological response to MVPA and PAMIND were similar, but RPE was rated lower in the PAMIND condition, which could have implications for MVPA adoption and maintenance. Future research should further explore combining MVPA and mindfulness training in terms of RPE.

Summary: This paper explores the responses of mindfulness teachers to the risk of co-optation as identified by recent critical research, and identifies three different viewpoints: one sees co-optation as an issue of intention, another suggests that co-optation can be a positive force for transformation, and the third views the discussion of co-optation as misguided. The paper also proposes three concepts of co-optation and provides nuanced supplements to the prevailing conception of structural co-optation of mindfulness in organizations.
