Summary: This study treated 77 patients with foot and ankle deformity and ulceration caused by spina bifida using the improved Ilizarov method in one stage, achieving satisfactory results with short treatment period and reduced complications. The translational potential of this study is to update the treatment concept for neurogenic deformities with ulcers on the foot and ankle joints.

Summary: In this case report, a patient with old post-traumatic severe ankle valgus and forefoot supination deformities was successfully treated with multi-stage surgery using the Ilizarov technique and limited osteotomy, avoiding complications commonly associated with conventional one-stage corrective osteotomies. This approach not only achieved satisfactory clinical results but also prevented infection and lower limb length discrepancy, highlighting the effectiveness of staged operations in managing complex ankle deformities.

Summary: This study conducted a review on circular external fixators (CEFs) in order to explore their design features and future directions. The study found that the developments of CEFs in terms of materials, automation, adjustment methods, component designs, wire-clamping, and performance evaluation have been extensively discussed. Meanwhile, the study also identified research gaps in the ease of assembly, effective wire-clamping methods, and CEFs embedded with online patient-monitoring systems, as well as a lack of research interest from low-middle and low-income countries.

Summary: The study aimed to compare the accuracy of different radiographic measurement methods for MP, and the results demonstrated that radiographic techniques can accurately measure MP when using calibration markers and a software calibration tool, thereby minimizing error sources and improving correction quality.

Summary: This study evaluated the clinical curative effect of Ilizarov external fixation and ankle arthrodesis in the treatment of elderly traumatic ankle arthritis. The results showed that this method can effectively improve the functional recovery of patients, and the ankle achieved bony fusion after the operation.

Summary: This study aimed to report the complication rate of ring external fixation performed by a single surgeon. The study found that minor complications included wire irritation and local erythema, while major complications required early reoperation or removal. Additionally, there was a significant correlation between minor complications and a history of osteomyelitis.

Summary: This study investigated the outcomes of two different types of circular external fixators (Ilizarov and hexapod) in the treatment of acute tibial fracture-related infections (FRI). The results showed that the Ilizarov fixator had better fracture healing and shorter duration of external fixation, while the hexapod system had less residual post-treatment deformity.

Summary: Stiff equinocavus foot deformities are challenging clinical entities that can be treated with osteotomies and extensive soft-tissue release. Neglected trauma and Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease are common causes, and conventional treatments may lead to serious complications. The Ilizarov technique allows gradual correction of deformities with minimal surgical morbidity.

Summary: Individuals with upper motor neuron syndrome, such as stroke survivors, often experience pathological increase of passive ankle stiffness due to spasticity. This study introduced a new ankle-foot orthosis called Hermes, which successfully compensated ankle joint stiffness and improved active dorsiflexion range of motion in stroke patients. The results suggest that Hermes holds great promise in supporting voluntary ankle function and benefiting walking and daily activities.
