Summary: This study conducted a review on circular external fixators (CEFs) in order to explore their design features and future directions. The study found that the developments of CEFs in terms of materials, automation, adjustment methods, component designs, wire-clamping, and performance evaluation have been extensively discussed. Meanwhile, the study also identified research gaps in the ease of assembly, effective wire-clamping methods, and CEFs embedded with online patient-monitoring systems, as well as a lack of research interest from low-middle and low-income countries.

Summary: This study compared the clinical outcomes of hexapod external fixator and monolateral external fixator in the treatment of high-energy tibial diaphyseal fractures. The results showed that the hexapod external fixator had advantages in surgical duration, external fixation time, residual deformity, and complications compared to the monolateral external fixator. However, there was no significant difference in clinical outcomes between the two methods.

Summary: This study investigated the biomechanical properties of a novel semicircular locking external fixator and compared it to a standard Ilizarov-type circular external fixator. The results showed that the semicircular locking external fixator had higher axial stiffness, shorter application time, and no difference in torsional loading compared to the Ilizarov-type fixator.

Summary: The study compared the clinical outcomes of static versus dynamic external fixation for elbow fracture-dislocations with persistent instability, finding no significant difference in elbow range of motion, complications, and revision surgeries between the two groups. Therefore, static external fixation is preferred for these injuries due to its ease of application.

Summary: The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate the medium-term clinical and functional outcomes of patients with closed, displaced, and unstable, simple or complex, intra- and extra-articular distal radius fractures (DRFs) treated with a bridging external fixator (BEF) and optional K-wires (KWs). The results showed that targeted use of K-wires treatment can achieve better clinical outcomes, especially in elderly patients.

Summary: The stability of an external locking plate fixator and a conventional external fixator for tibial fractures was compared using finite element analysis. The study concluded that external locking plate fixation is more flexible and can influence bone healing. However, further experimental and biological analysis is needed to validate these findings.

Summary: The use of 3D-printed patient-specific instrument (PSI) as a guide in the treatment of tibia defects improves accuracy and reduces operation time and radiation exposure compared to traditional surgery. The study found significant differences in operation time, fluoroscopy times, and the effectiveness of bone defect repair between the PSI group and the traditional surgery group.

Summary: The study aimed to evaluate the feasibility and effectiveness of using a hexapod external fixator for correcting postoperative malalignment in tibial diaphyseal fractures treated with monolateral external fixation. Results showed that the temporary application of the hexapod external fixator achieved satisfactory realignment in a short period of time, with all correction parameters being less than the preoperative values.

Summary: An anterior ring internal fixator system combined with sacroiliac screw fixation is an effective treatment for Tile C pelvic fractures, offering advantages such as minimal invasiveness, simple operation, short operative time, and good curative effects. The results of this study showed that this approach had significantly better outcomes compared to the plate-screw system, with lower complication rates and shorter hospital stays.

Summary: This study retrospectively analyzed 13 cases of complex rigid foot deformities treated with the Smart Correction fixator system from 2016 to 2020. The results showed that the system was effective in treating complex foot deformities, achieving plantigrade foot and improving soft tissue balance.

Summary: This study assessed the results of Ilizarov external fixator in treating infected nonunion of the distal humerus in 23 patients. All cases achieved bony union with an average external fixation time of 5.6 months. Infection was controlled without recurrence, but there were various complications.

Summary: The study findings suggest that the application of 3D printing technology in surgery can help reduce incision length and surgical root numbers, thus decreasing blood loss; surgical time, intraoperative blood transfusion, age, and incision length/surgical root number have a significant positive impact on bleeding, while gender has no effect.

Summary: The purpose of this study was to investigate the transmission of forces between the Ilizarov external fixator and broken bones, as well as the stress distribution during orthopedic treatment. By establishing screw and mechanical models, conducting experiments and simulations, a biomechanical model of the Ilizarov external fixator was derived and the change in adjustable forces and tensions was determined.
