Astaxanthin Attenuates Nonalcoholic Steatohepatitis with Downregulation of Osteoprotegerin in Ovariectomized Mice Fed Choline-Deficient High-Fat Diet

Meng Zhao, Lingyun Ma, Takashi Honda, Asuka Kato, Taichi Ohshiro, Shinya Yokoyama, Kenta Yamamoto, Takanori Ito, Norihiro Imai, Yoji Ishizu, Masanao Nakamura, Hiroki Kawashima, Noriko M. Tsuji, Masatoshi Ishigami, Mitsuhiro Fujishiro

Summary: This study suggests that astaxanthin has the potential to treat NASH in postmenopausal women, as it alleviates pathological NASH and reduces the expression of OPG.

Comparison of novel large-bore and conventional-bore covered self-expandable metal stents for malignant gastric outlet obstruction: Multicenter, retrospective study

Akiyuki Inokuma, Naminatsu Takahara, Rei Ishibashi, Ryunosuke Hakuta, Kazunaga Ishigaki, Kei Saito, Tomotaka Saito, Tsuyoshi Hamada, Suguru Mizuno, Hiroshi Yagioka, Sho Takahashi, Hirofumi Kogure, Takashi Sasaki, Kenji Hirano, Yukiko Ito, Hiroyuki Isayama, Yousuke Nakai, Kazuhiko Koike, Mitsuhiro Fujishiro

Summary: This study compared the effects of two different sizes of covered self-expandable metal stents (cSEMS) in the treatment of malignant gastric outlet obstruction. The results showed that compared to the 20mm-cSEMS, the 24mm-cSEMS had a longer median cumulative time to recurrent GOO and comparable safety.

Scoring system for predicting the prognosis of elderly gastric cancer patients after endoscopic submucosal dissection

Nobuhito Ito, Kohei Funasaka, Toshihisa Fujiyoshi, Kazuki Nishida, Kazuhiro Furukawa, Naomi Kakushima, Satoshi Furune, Eizaburo Ohno, Masanao Nakamura, Noriyuki Horiguchi, Tomoyuki Shibata, Ryoji Miyahara, Jun-Ichi Haruta, Yoshiki Hirooka, Mitsuhiro Fujishiro, Hiroki Kawashima

Summary: This study aimed to develop a scoring system to predict the long-term prognosis after endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) for early gastric cancer (EGC) among patients aged >= 75 years. Factors such as Charlson comorbidity index (CCI), psoas muscle index (PMI), and age were identified to be significantly related to overall survival after ESD. The scoring system, which included high CCI, low PMI, and age >= 80 years, successfully stratified the long-term prognosis of elderly patients after ESD.

Summary: In this study, the transcriptome analysis of GA-FG revealed significant expression of NKX2-1/TTF1 in GA-FG. Immunohistochemistry and cell biology experiments demonstrated ectopic expression and normal transactivation ability of NKX2-1/TTF-1, suggesting its essential role in GA-FG development.

Risk and preventive factors of early-onset colorectal neoplasms: endoscopic and histological database analysis

Junya Arai, Tomonori Aoki, Yoku Hayakawa, Ryota Niikura, Rei Ishibashi, Nobumi Suzuki, Yosuke Tsuji, Atsuo Yamada, Tetsuo Ushiku, Mitsuhiro Fujishiro

Summary: The incidence of early-onset colorectal neoplasms is increasing, and the risk factors differ between early-onset and late-onset neoplasms. For young male patients, especially those with a family history of colorectal cancer, colonoscopy is recommended.

Risk factors for incomplete resection with pharyngeal endoscopic submucosal dissection and long-term prognosis after resection

Yoshiki Sakaguchi, Yuki Saito, Mizuo Ando, Masafumi Yoshida, Osamu Fukuoka, Kenya Kobayashi, Dai Kubota, Daisuke Ohki, Hiroya Mizutani, Keiko Niimi, Yosuke Tsuji, Mitsuhiro Fujishiro, Tatsuya Yamasoba

Summary: Endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) is an effective and safe treatment for superficial pharyngeal squamous carcinoma. However, there is a lack of sufficient evidence on the long-term outcomes of pharyngeal ESD. This retrospective study analyzed 83 cases of superficial pharyngeal cancer treated with ESD and found a high en bloc resection rate and low adverse event rate. The 5-year cumulative incidence of metachronous head and neck cancer after resection and the overall survival rates after pharyngeal ESD were also reported.

Performing the ABC Method Twice for Gastric Cancer Risk Stratification: A Retrospective Study Based on Data from a Large-Scale Screening Facility

Satoru Mizutani, Yu Takahashi, Takeshi Shimamoto, Hideki Nakagawa, Hiroyuki Hisada, Kaori Oshio, Dai Kubota, Hiroya Mizutani, Daisuke Ohki, Yoshiki Sakaguchi, Seiichi Yakabi, Keiko Niimi, Naomi Kakushima, Yosuke Tsuji, Ryoichi Wada, Nobutake Yamamichi, Mitsuhiro Fujishiro

Summary: This study aimed to analyze whether performing the ABC screening twice in a lifetime is useful for stratifying the risk of gastric cancer. Retrospective analysis of data from individuals who participated in health checkups in 2010 and 2015 showed that performing the ABC method twice, 5 years apart, does not significantly improve gastric cancer risk stratification.

Hemorrhoids as a risk factor for colorectal adenomas on colonoscopy

Osamu Toyoshima, Toshihiro Nishizawa, Shuntaro Yoshida, Tatsuya Matsuno, Kotaro Miyoshi, Eri Naito, Chihiro Shiomi, Takeshi Uozumi, Mitsuhiro Fujishiro, Yutaka Saito

Summary: This study investigated the association between the presence and severity of hemorrhoids and the detection of precancerous colorectal polyps. The results showed that hemorrhoids were associated with a higher number of adenomas, especially severe ones. Therefore, complete colonoscopy should be performed in patients with hemorrhoids.

Gemcitabine plus nab-paclitaxel for pancreatic cancer and interstitial lung disease: A nationwide longitudinal study

Kei Saito, Nobuaki Michihata, Tsuyoshi Hamada, Taisuke Jo, Hiroki Matsui, Kiyohide Fushimi, Yousuke Nakai, Hideo Yasunaga, Mitsuhiro Fujishiro

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the incidence and risk factors of interstitial lung disease (ILD) in patients with pancreatic cancer (PC) receiving gemcitabine plus nab-paclitaxel chemotherapy. The researchers found that ILD occurred in 2.7% of patients receiving this chemotherapy regimen and was associated with older age. Therefore, monitoring ILD-related symptoms is necessary when administering gemcitabine plus nab-paclitaxel to older patients with PC.

Summary: This study investigated the current status of diagnosis and treatment of early-stage colorectal cancer in Asian countries. The results showed disparities in the dissemination of advanced technologies and the prevalence of colorectal ESD in different countries. Therefore, the promotion of advanced technologies and education is necessary.
