Summary: The purpose of this study is to establish a large Finnish collection of psychosis cases, including diverse populations from Asia, Latin America, and Africa, in addition to known population isolates like Finland. A total of 10,474 individuals aged 18 years or older were recruited and genotyped. The future plans of this study include investigating the effects of common variants, rare variants, and copy number variations on the severity of psychotic illness, as well as tracking the longitudinal course of illness based on nationwide register data.

Summary: Missed cases of neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) within adult psychiatry services have attracted increasing attention. This study found that almost two thirds of first-time attenders at an adult psychiatry clinic met criteria for ADHD or ASD. Most of the patients with NDD had not been diagnosed in childhood. The results underscore the importance of screening for NDD in adult psychiatric services.

Summary: This study aims to investigate the effects and feasibility of using virtual reality (VR) as a recreational intervention for psychiatric inpatients. A mixed-methods clinical trial will be conducted with 124 patients, comparing outcomes for a period with VR-based experiences and a period without VR. Findings from this study will be disseminated through academic publications and presentations.

Summary: This study compared the frequency of needs of patients with schizophrenia in forensic services across five European countries. The results showed differences in the assessments of needs between patients and their care staff, with staff reporting more total needs and patients reporting more unmet needs. The findings suggest that patients' self-assessments of needs provide important information for providing sufficient help and support.

Summary: The study found a positive correlation between sub-clinical autistic and positive psychotic traits. Autistic traits and psychotic traits independently predict depression, self-harm, and suicidality. Interestingly, a negative interaction between the autistic trait of attention to detail and psychotic traits was associated with depression.

Summary: This planned network meta-analysis aims to compare the efficacy of different types of family interventions for psychotic disorders by looking at various content and format factors. Main outcomes will focus on patients' clinical state and relatives' attitudes towards psychosis, with additional measures including symptom severity, functioning, burden, and compliance/drop-out. This study will use a random effects model within a frequentist framework to rank interventions based on relative efficacy and address issues of transitivity, heterogeneity, and inconsistency.

Summary: A significant portion of Muslim psychiatric patients experience tactile and somatic hallucinations, often in a multimodal or full-blown entity/jinn encounter form, causing distress. The involvement of sensory modalities in these hallucinations may be related to an underlying stochastic process, as suggested by the research findings.

Summary: The challenges of caregiving can have a significant impact on the emotional and psychological well-being of caregivers, including the development of post-traumatic stress symptoms. However, there is limited and unclear literature on PTSS among caregivers of individuals with neurodevelopmental, neurocognitive, and psychiatric disorders. This scoping review aims to map the existing research on PTSS in these caregivers, identifying key concepts and gaps in the literature.

Summary: This study found that depressive symptoms and chronic peripheral inflammation are associated with impaired functional remission in patients with schizophrenia, independent of psychotic remission. These findings emphasize the potential of improving depressive symptoms and chronic peripheral inflammation to help patients achieve functional remission.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the feasibility of conducting a large clinical trial within the Rwandan mental healthcare system to determine the safety, efficacy, and benefits of paliperidone palmitate once-monthly (PP1M) and once-every-3-months (PP3M) long-acting injectable formulations in adults with schizophrenia. The study identified areas for improvement in study execution, but these limitations were considered surmountable.

Summary: Individuals with Schizophrenia Spectrum Disorders (SSDs) have higher rates of suicidal thoughts, attempts, and death by suicide. Sleep disturbances are risk factors for suicidality and are also implicated in the onset and exacerbation of psychotic symptoms in SSDs. Sleep monitoring may offer an adjunct risk monitoring method and potential treatment target for SSDs. Further research is needed to explore the relationships between specific aspects of suicidality and objective sleep parameters, as well as the psychological processes underlying the sleep-suicide relationship in SSDs.

Summary: This article discusses the difficulties in differential diagnosis in practical psychiatric settings and the prospect of creating a novel diagnostic system using objective biomarkers. Neuroimaging studies have shown that subcortical brain structures are associated with various psycho-behavioral functions, but there are currently no neuroimaging data-driven clinical criteria that can overcome the limitations of the current diagnostic system in reflecting cognitive/social functioning. The authors conducted a large-scale study and found volumetric and lateralization alterations in several psychiatric disorders, which were associated with cognitive/social functioning.

Summary: This study aims to investigate the characteristics of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in adult psychiatric outpatients and compare them with non-ASD patients. The results showed that the ASD group had a higher number of co-occurring psychiatric disorders and lower functional level compared to the non-ASD group. This study emphasizes the importance of comprehensive assessment of psychiatric disorders in ASD patients in adult psychiatric services.
