Exploratory machine learning modeling of adaptive and maladaptive personality traits from passively sensed behavior

Runze Yan, Whitney R. Ringwald, Julio Vega, Madeline Kehl, Sang Won Bae, Anind K. Dey, Carissa A. Low, Aidan G. C. Wright, Afsaneh Doryab

Summary: This paper presents novel analytic approaches to extract and understand behavioral patterns associated with adaptive and maladaptive personality traits through continuous passive sensing of daily behavior from mobile devices. The analysis shows that both adaptive and maladaptive traits are linked to passively sensed behavior, providing initial evidence for the utility of this data in studying personality and its pathology. The findings also suggest directions for future research into the underlying behavior patterns that connect adaptive and maladaptive variants.

Prediction of Hospital Readmission from Longitudinal Mobile Data Streams

Chen Qian, Patraporn Leelaprachakul, Matthew Landers, Carissa Low, Anind K. Dey, Afsaneh Doryab

Summary: Hospital readmissions pose challenges for healthcare systems and patients, accurate prediction is difficult, but this research shows promise in leveraging mobile data for daily risk prediction after discharge.

Association of robotic approach with patient-reported outcomes after pancreatectomy: a prospective cohort study

Jason B. Liu, Vernissia Tam, Mazen S. Zenati, Danielle Schwartz, Areej Ali, Carissa A. Low, Lillian J. Smith, Herbert J. Zeh III, Amer H. Zureikat, Melissa E. Hogg

Summary: Robotic-assisted pancreatectomy may offer greater improvement in symptoms from the patient's perspective compared to open surgery by three months postoperatively. However, patients who underwent robotic surgery experienced worse FACT-Hep scores, while showing significant improvement in the HCS scores. There was no significant change in the FACT-G scores.

Continuous-Time Modeling of the Bidirectional Relationship Between Incidental Affect and Physical Activity

Geralyn R. Ruissen, Mark R. Beauchamp, Eli Puterman, Bruno D. Zumbo, Ryan E. Rhodes, Benjamin A. Hives, Brinkley M. Sharpe, Julio Vega, Carissa A. Low, Aidan G. C. Wright

Summary: Using continuous-time analysis, this study examined the dynamic relationship between incidental affect and moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA). The results showed that positive and negative incidental affect predicted subsequent MVPA, and engaging in MVPA also predicted subsequent affect. The influence of incidental affect on MVPA was stronger than the reciprocal relationship. The effects were strongest at 7-9 hour time intervals.

Digital Biomarkers of Symptom Burden Self-Reported by Perioperative Patients Undergoing Pancreatic Surgery: Prospective Longitudinal Study

Carissa A. Low, Meng Li, Julio Vega, Krina C. Durica, Denzil Ferreira, Vernissia Tam, Melissa Hogg, Herbert Zeh, Afsaneh Doryab, Anind K. Dey

Summary: This study demonstrates the potential of using smartphone and Fitbit data to predict symptom burden in cancer patients before and after surgery, particularly for pain, fatigue, and diarrhea. Digital biomarkers show promise in informing symptom management interventions and monitoring patient symptoms passively.
