MicroRNAs in Metastasis and the Tumour Microenvironment

Carla Sole, Charles Henderson Lawrie

Summary: Metastasis, the spread of cancer cells from the primary tumor to other parts of the body, is a primary cause of cancer-related mortality. Understanding the role of microRNAs in cancer development and progression, particularly in the interaction between tumor cells and the tumor microenvironment, is crucial for developing new strategies to combat metastasis.

Integrated mRNA and miRNA Transcriptomic Analyses Reveals Divergent Mechanisms of Sunitinib Resistance in Clear Cell Renal Cell Carcinoma (ccRCC)

Summary: Clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) is a common cancer with a high mortality rate. While treatment with targeted drugs like sunitinib has improved patient outcomes, drug resistance remains a major challenge. By studying sunitinib-resistant cell lines, researchers have identified various pathways and mechanisms by which tumor cells develop resistance to sunitinib. The discovery of common miRNAs across multiple resistance mechanisms suggests potential therapeutic targets for overcoming sunitinib resistance in ccRCC.

Summary: The Gammacoronavirus infectious bronchitis virus (IBV) is a highly contagious and economically important disease in poultry. Vaccination with live attenuated and inactivated vaccines is used to control the virus. Researchers have identified specific amino acid changes that can attenuate IBV and have the potential for vaccine development.

SOX9 Triggers Different Epithelial to Mesenchymal Transition States to Promote Pancreatic Cancer Progression

Summary: The study shows that SOX9 plays a crucial role in the progression and metastasis of pancreatic cancer by regulating stemness and EMT processes. High levels of SOX9 are associated with metastases in clinical samples.

High SOX9 Maintains Glioma Stem Cell Activity through a Regulatory Loop Involving STAT3 and PML

Paula Aldaz, Natalia Martin-Martin, Ander Saenz-Antonanzas, Estefania Carrasco-Garcia, Maria Alvarez-Satta, Alejandro Elua-Pinin, Steven M. Pollard, Charles H. Lawrie, Manuel Moreno-Valladares, Nicolas Sampron, Juergen Hench, Robin Lovell-Badge, Arkaitz Carracedo, Ander Matheu

Summary: SOX9 is a critical transcription factor associated with poor survival in glioma patients. Knockdown of SOX9 impairs glioma stem cell proliferation, suggesting its potential as a therapeutic target. This study reveals a regulatory loop involving SOX9, STAT3, and PML that is essential for glioma stem cell activity and self-renewal. Inhibition of STAT3 or PML reduces the expression of SOX9, STAT3, and PML proteins, leading to decreased tumorigenicity in glioma stem cells.

Summary: Despite widespread vaccination, the COVID-19 pandemic caused by SARS-CoV-2 continues to burden healthcare systems globally. To address this, researchers have developed an instrument-free molecular diagnostic test called Repvit. This test uses gold nanoparticles to detect SARS-CoV-2 RNA directly from nasal swab or saliva samples, providing results in less than 20 minutes with high sensitivity and specificity. This technology has the potential to be used in resource-limited settings or for individual self-testing.
