Pre- and post-Ebola outbreak trends in wild meat trade in West Africa

Summary: The study found that the Ebola outbreak led to a sharp decline in wild meat sales in Nigeria, especially for reptiles. However, after the Ebola epidemic, there was a recovery in the sales of certain animal groups, such as ungulates, rodents, and carnivores. Surveys showed significant differences in wild meat consumption and attitudes among rural versus urban areas and different age groups.

Summary: In 2017, the national agency for health security (ANSS) in Guinea implemented DHIS2 as the Ministry of Health national surveillance system to capture and report disease data. DHIS2 Tracker was later used to collect individual-level data for epidemic-prone diseases, including during the COVID-19 pandemic. An updated Tracker module was developed to meet the needs of the Ebola virus disease outbreak in 2021, and it has since been expanded for future viral haemorrhagic fever outbreaks.

A study on sub-Saharan African women researchers revealed a gender inequity in prestigious authorship positions, with men dominating as first authors, last authors, and single authors. However, the gender discrepancy in journal leadership does not necessarily contribute to the inequities faced by women researchers.

Spatial inequality of opportunity in West Africa☆

The study finds that moving to a better location at birth significantly increases the chances of completing primary education, with a greater effect on girls. Algorithm for the support of non-related (serious) adverse events in an Ebola vaccine trial in the Democratic Republic of the Congo

Summary: When implementing an Ebola vaccine trial in a remote area in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, ethical considerations on ancillary care obligations were made due to a dysfunctional health care system and unmet health needs of participants. A joint algorithm and policy were developed by the Universities of Antwerp and Kinshasa to address issues related to non-related (serious) adverse events, providing structured and consistent support and management. Approved by the relevant ethics committee, the algorithm will be implemented in November 2021, with lessons learned to be shared with stakeholders within and outside DRC.

Judicial Power and Influence on Population Health

Summary: Since its founding, the Supreme Court has played a major role in defining public health powers and individual health-related rights. The recent shift towards a conservative supermajority has resulted in a Court willing to overturn long-held precedent and dismantle public health policies based on ideology. This poses a threat to public health issues such as infectious disease control, reproductive rights, LGBTQ+ rights, firearm safety, immigration, and climate change. Congress has the power to curb the Court's extreme actions without compromising its non-political nature by taking steps such as limiting nationwide injunctions and altering the appointment and term limits of federal judges and Supreme Court Justices.
