Summary: This article introduces two metrics for citation inequality of individual scientists, the Hirsch index and the Kolkata index, and discusses their applicability in the elastic fiber bundle and percolation models. The study also reveals a scaling relation between the number of members of parliaments or national assemblies and their respective h-indices, resolving a recent controversy.

Summary: The study found that gender does not have a significant impact on the language used by applicants, but there are subtle differences in clout between successful and unsuccessful applicants. It is worth noting that principal investigators of successful applications had a significantly higher number of published papers.

Summary: This study found that the Author Impact Factor (AIF) provides intuitive and complementary information to the h-index regarding the research output of neurosurgical authors, with the difference in AIF among different groups not as profound as that of the h-index.

Summary: This study analyzed reviewers' comments in evaluation reports using a combination of machine learning and qualitative analysis methods. The results showed that the reviewers' comments aligned with the preset evaluation criteria and the evaluation outcome was more influenced by the weaknesses of the proposals.

Summary: This study compares the usage of RCR in academic otolaryngology and finds that men have higher h-indices and w-RCRs than women, though there is no gender difference in m-RCR. Career duration has an impact on h-index and w-RCR, but not on m-RCR. The professor rank is highest in all metrics.

Summary: Research indicates that changes in the organization of peer review for proposals submitted to the European Union's Marie Curie programme had little impact on the outcome, with factors such as grant type or research area playing a more significant role.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the degree of citation skew in otolaryngology journals and how article citation distribution affects their impact factors. The findings showed that article citation frequency was similar across most journals, consistent with the narrow distribution of impact factors. Although citation skew exists, otolaryngology journals' overall portfolios of published works are likely to have a greater influence on their impact factors than a small number of highly cited articles.

Summary: Peer review is widely used in academia, but it has been criticized for its slow pace, unreliability, subjectivity, and potential bias. This study examines the consistency of peer reviews and their impact on the allocation of research grants. The findings show that peer review scores given by different reviewers have low levels of consistency, and reviews from nominated reviewers are overly positive and not correlated with evaluations from independent reviewers. However, a positive review from a nominated reviewer greatly increases the chances of receiving a grant, while a single negative peer review significantly reduces funding prospects.

Summary: The study found that academic books have significant differences in impact across different fields, with Clinical, Pre-Clinical, and Health books placing a higher importance on altmetric indicators, while Physical Sciences books prioritize citation indicators. Each field has its own unique characteristics, with the impact of books in the Arts and Humanities and Social Sciences fields not being very apparent.

Summary: Citation cartels are groups of researchers who excessively cite each other's work to artificially inflate their citation counts and enhance their reputation. The practice of citation cartels involves journals agreeing to cite each other's publications to boost their own impact factors. This practice has been criticized for distorting impact factors and undermining the integrity of the scientific process. To combat citation cartels, journals should use software tools to identify suspicious citing behavior and implement policies that promote transparency and discourage self-citation. Journals should also be held accountable for unethical citation practices, and researchers should carefully evaluate their own submission practices.

Summary: This study investigated the global status of acute pancreatitis (AP) research and found a significant positive correlation between AP research output and gross domestic product (GDP). The United States, China, Germany, Japan, and the United Kingdom had the highest research output among the top 20 countries. Switzerland had the highest research impact factor, while the Netherlands had the highest average citations. Genetic research and AP-related hyperglycemia were identified as research highlights. Overall, there was a growth trend in global AP research output, with stable research quality in developed countries and progress in developing countries.
