Summary: The purpose of this study was to compare the short-term outcomes between laparoscopic Hartmann reversal (LHR) and open Hartmann reversal (OHR) in patients who had undergone Hartmann surgery for colorectal cancer (CRC). The patients were retrospectively enrolled and compared using propensity score matching analysis. The results showed that there was no difference in short-term prognosis, but LHR still had some advantages considering that it was less invasive to the patient.

Summary: This study suggests that laparoscopic gastrectomy is not inferior to open gastrectomy for resectable gastric cancer in terms of complications and outcomes, regardless of the presence of sarcopenia. There was no difference in overall survival between the two approaches, but laparoscopic gastrectomy may reduce mortality from non-gastric cancer-related conditions in sarcopenic patients.

Summary: The study compared laparoscopic and open distal pancreatectomy for pancreatic neoplasms and found that laparoscopic approach resulted in shorter hospital stay, less blood loss, lower postoperative morbidity, and decreased total costs. These advantages were also observed in patients with pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC).

Summary: This study retrospectively analyzed the surgical data of 124 patients with distal cholangiocarcinoma (DCC) and compared the outcomes of laparoscopic pancreaticoduodenectomy (LPD) and open pancreaticoduodenectomy (OPD). The results showed that LPD had better overall survival and less intraoperative bleeding compared to OPD, suggesting that LPD may be a more recommended procedure for DCC patients.

Summary: This study compared the surgical outcomes of transoral robotic thyroidectomy (TORT) and conventional open thyroidectomy (OT), showing similar results with longer operative time in TORT. TORT can be performed safely in selected patients and may be a suitable operative alternative for those who do not want neck scars.

Summary: In comparison with open standard gastrectomy, laparoscopic gastrectomy did not result in inferior disease-free survival for both early-stage and locally advanced gastric cancer patients. The study showed no significant difference in mortality and morbidity between the two surgical methods, but the benefits of 5-year relapse-free survival were larger in elderly patients who underwent laparoscopic gastrectomy compared to nonelderly patients.

Summary: This meta-analysis compared the effects of laparoscopic hepatectomy (LH) versus open hepatectomy (OH) on the outcomes of patients with intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC). It found that LH has better surgical outcomes and comparable oncological and survival outcomes to OH, indicating that laparoscopy is at least not inferior to open surgery for ICC.

Summary: The study found that compared to open pancreatoduodenectomy, minimally invasive pancreatoduodenectomy (MIPD) was associated with a higher rate of adequate lymphadenectomy and a shorter length of stay. However, there were no significant differences in the surgical margins status, 90-day mortality, and overall survival between the two approaches.

Summary: This study retrospectively analyzed and compared the efficacy and safety of laparoscopic and open surgery for patients with hilar cholangiocarcinoma (HCCA). The results showed that laparoscopic radical resection of HCCA had comparable perioperative safety to open surgery, with less bleeding and shorter operation time. However, further investigations are needed before its wider application.

Summary: This international multicenter study compared laparoscopic and open right posterior sectionectomy, showing that laparoscopic approach had advantages in terms of operative time, blood loss and length of hospital stay compared to the open approach, with no differences in major complications and R0 resection rate.

Summary: The study aimed to explore the feasibility and effectiveness of laparoscopic-assisted radical gastrectomy in elderly patients with gastric cancer. The laparoscopic-assisted group had lower rates of surgical complications, shorter postoperative hospital stay, and lower readmission rates compared to the open radical gastrectomy group.

Summary: The study confirmed that laparoscopic caudate lobectomy (LCB) is safe and feasible for selected patients when performed by experienced surgeons. In the LCB group, intraoperative blood loss was significantly less than in the OCB group, and there was a tendency of lower rates of respiratory infection post-operatively. LCB also had a shorter post-operative hospital stay than OCB, although the hospitalization cost was higher.

Summary: This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of laparoscopic repeat hepatectomy (LRH) and open repeat hepatectomy (ORH) on recurrent hepatocellular carcinoma (RHCC). A meta-analysis of studies based on propensity score-matched cohorts was conducted. The results showed that LRH had better surgical outcomes than ORH, but there were no significant differences in oncological outcomes. Therefore, LRH may be a preferable option for the treatment of RHCC.
